You must have been wealthy -- when the old B&W took another dump, Dad used to pull all the tubes out and take them down to the TV tube tester at the department store down the street, figure out which one was bad, get a replacement,and spend the afternoon plugging all the tubes back in.

24 less television sets than Indy Frisco here, but damn if I get to decide what goes on any of them (most of the time, anyway). My kids will usually fight over what to watch on TV, then go their separate ways. Ten minutes later they're invariably watching the same thing on different TV sets.

Holy shit! Just looked at your initial post, Mikey. Airplane, Santana, The Who, Simon & Garfunkel all go on my list, but...the surprise memory: The Crusaders. Hadn't thought about them in years.

Yeah, the Crusaders were sort of my first discovery of jazz. My parents actually took me to see Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong when I was very young, but the Crusaders were my own discovery. That led to a lot of other stuff shortly after, including Miles, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard and a lot of other 50s and 60s talents.

BTW...I forgot to include the Stones on my list. I guess it just goes without saying. I watched the 2008 Scorcese documentary "Shine a Light" on Palladia last night. Those guys can still rock out. It's truly amazing the moves that a 63 year old Mick could still pull off.

When I was in HS and Jr. HS they used to have rock concerts sponsored by the Associated Students (among other events) pretty regularly at Frost Amphitheater, which is a very nice, grass covered venue on the Stanford University campus, holding about 7,000 people. My first rock concert ever was Sly and the Family Stone at Frost. Also saw Tower of Power, Santana and a lot of other Bay Area bands at the time.

At some point people started getting a littly too rowdy and climbing the fences to sneak in for free, and they decided to stop having rock bands perform there.

After the ban on rock concerts the next show was NRPS (country western I guess) and Miles Davis (the entire Bitches Brew ensemble). About the strangest combo for a double bill that I ever saw. A great show, though, and technically not rock.

Not quite sure how being 55 would disqualify anyone from being a country music fan, although perhaps not of the Garth Brooks variety.

God's honest truth is that before I was in the Navy, I had never met a single person whose preferred musical genre was country. Not to my knowledge, anyway. Maybe I just lived a sheltered life early on.
