I think you need to hold a job for a minimum of one year to be eligible for unemployment. He's never done that AFAIK. If he ever managed to, it was so long ago that he's long since used up his eligibility.

Fortunately for him, his wife works and she hasn't thrown him out yet. That's the only reason he can have the hip replacement surgery.
