The problem is, 1,000 years ago, when you and I were both kids (and even for a few years after we both couldn't really be called "kids" anymore) the Pac 8/10 winning the Rose Bowl was in the "death and taxes" category. This has to be a major  for any old school Pac-8/10 fan.

As for the bowl games themselves . . .
Papa Willie wrote:Gildan New Mexico
Temple vs. Wyoming Albuquerque, N.M.
I'll go with Wyoming for two reasons - home field & altitude. Temple won't even know how to piss in a high altitude situation, much less play in it.
I'll go with Wyoming for the same reason. Btw, I'm not quite sure why Temple wound up here, when the Military Bowl had two bids open and was in pretty close proximity to Temple.
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
Ohio vs. Utah State Boise, Idaho
Utah State - closer to home. Plus - Goober's a fag.
Agreed with all of the above, though I'm not sure what Goober being a fag has to do with this bowl game.
R+L Carriers New Orleans
San Diego State vs. Louisiana-Lafayette New Orleans
I might go with the home team, so I think I'll go with SDS instead.
3 for 3 so far in picking these games identically. San Diego State.
Beef 'O' Brady's St. Petersburg
Florida International vs. Marshall St. Petersburg, Fla.
Marshall - just because their plane crashed 40 years ago.
Toss up game, with FIU having serious HFA, so I'll go with FIU.
San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia
TCU vs. Louisiana Tech San Diego
Fuck - talk about a team that got SCREWED. Probably the worst of them all. TCU by 40.
TCU by about 100 (not really, but it will be a blowout).
MAACO Las Vegas
Arizona State vs. Boise State Las Vegas
You laugh - but this may well be a trap game for Boise. Reminds me of the Utah/'Bama game a few years back. Boise got fucked bad here, and might not give a fuck. Still - I think they'll pull it out...
Boise's another team that got screwed, and they always seem to play with a chip on their shoulder against a BCS team in a bowl game. Plus, Arizona State doesn't have a coach. Boise by 100 (again, not really, but it will be a blowout).
Sheraton Hawaii
Nevada vs. Southern Miss Honolulu
So. Miss by a mile - unless the hicks are too freaked out by the hula girls.
I'll go with Southern Miss here as well, provided that they don't treat the trip as a vacation.
AdvoCare V100 Independence
Missouri vs. North Carolina Shreveport, La.
Might be a decent game here, but I'll go with Mizzou.
I think Missouri's the better team overall. Mizzou.
Little Caesars
Western Michigan vs. Purdue Detroit
    Purdue's in a bowl game? Fuck it - I'll go with W. Mishitgan on that alone!
Could actually be one of the more competitive games. I'll take Purdue, if only because I know more about them than Screwy's alma mater.
Belk
Louisville vs. NC State Charlotte, N.C.
Could be a decent game to watch. Both teams came on pretty good at the end of the year. Might go with NC State, just for home field advantage.
Louisville came on strong here, and you never know what to expect from N.C. State under Osborne. Louisville.
Military Bowl Presented By Northrop Grumman
Toledo vs. Air Force Washington, D.C.
Jesus. Okay - Toledo.
Just to be a contrarian, I'll go with Air Force.
Bridgepoint Education Holiday
California vs. Texas San Diego
Bwahaha! Cripple fight! I'll go with Texas, just because they aren't coated in jizz.
I wouldn't have a dog in this one if not for 2oodles. Texas.
Champs Sports
Florida State vs. Notre Dame Orlando, Fla.
^^^^This could be a great game. I think I might take ND in this game, just because I think FSU will probably be a little over-cocky.
Agree that this is one of the more entertaining matchups, at least on paper. I honestly could see this going either way. I'll follow my heart and pick ND.
Valero Alamo
Washington vs. Baylor San Antonio
Baylor gets home field advantage - plus they're just better. RGIII will have fun.
Agreed, Baylor.
Bell Helicopter Armed Forces
BYU vs. Tulsa Dallas
I'll take BYU.
I'll go with Tulsa, more to be a contrarian than anything else.
New Era Pinstripe
Rutgers vs. Iowa State Bronx, N.Y.
Will somebody tell NYC that they don't fucking matter in the world of college football? Another shit game. I might go with IS here, so take Fuckters.
Disagree. I think this has potential to be a really good bowl game with some time. Rutgers has significant HFA here.
Franklin American Mortgage Music City
Mississippi State vs. Wake Forest Nashville, Tenn.
I'm going to go with MSU - just because I lost a lot of respect for Wake when they got ass-hammered by Vandy at home.
Sounds like as good a reason as any to me. Mississippi State
Insight
Iowa vs. Oklahoma Tempe, Ariz.
Could be a good game, but I think OU has a lot to prove (again) after the total ass-whoop they got by Okie State.
Here we have one team looking for redemption from a disappointing season against another in the "just happy to be here" category (at least this year, sorry, Mace). This one has potential to get ugly in a hurry. Oklahoma.
Meineke Car Care of Texas
Texas A&M vs. Northwestern Houston
A&M in this one.
I'll take aTm here as well. The Sherman Era ends on a high note, albeit with more of a whimper than a bang.
Hyundai Sun
Georgia Tech vs. Utah El Paso, Texas
Utah BIG in this one. They'll have almost a full month to get ready for the option, and this always KILLS GT in bowl games.
Agreed that Georgia Tech's biggest advantage is the element of surprise. They don't have that as much in bowl season. Utah.
AutoZone Liberty
Cincinnati vs. Vanderbilt Memphis, Tenn.
Could be a good game. Gonna go with Vandy because I'm an SECBSH, plus the home field advantage.
Cincinnati is the better team, if they play to potential. That's a big if, though. Still, I'll take them here.
Kraft Fight Hunger
Illinois vs. UCLA San Francisco
Whoever loses this game wins. What an awful bowl. Neither will want to win it. I might go with UCLA with HFA.
I think Mgo had this one right. Illinois has talent, just hasn't put it together. Illinois.
Chick-fil-A
Virginia vs. Auburn Atlanta
This was originally supposed to be VTech & Auburn (to which I would have picked VTech), but I think Aubie will find enough within themselves to win this one. Peach Bowl is normally a damned good game, too!
Virginia was a nice feel-good story this season, but I don't think they're ready to compete at this level yet. Auburn.
TicketCity
Houston vs. Penn State Dallas
Poop team vs. Kiddie Diddler U. I think I'll go with the children-fuckers in this one.
This game actually ended up with a deceptively good matchup. I'll go with Penn State. Rumps will be torn at least slightly, though.
Outback
Michigan State vs. Georgia Tampa, Fla.
Sorry, Mgo. After seeing how your boys did against the SEC last year, I think you might get a little more. UGA's gonna be pissed about this past Saturday. Honestly - I hope Sparty tears them a new asshole, though.
Sparty usually gets buttfucked in the mouth by the SEC in bowl games. Georgia.
Capital One
Nebraska vs. South Carolina Orlando, Fla.
I think I'm going with Nebraska. SC under Spurrier always seems to suck in bowl games. If SC's defense plays like they CAN, then SC wins. I'll have to see that happen, though.
I'll take South Carolina here, if only to piss Brad off.
Taxslayer.com Gator Bowl
Ohio State vs. Florida Jacksonville, Fla.
Wow. What a shit bowl here. Ohio State. Florida doesn't deserve to be in ANYTHING, much less this game.
Two programs who got here more on reputation than on what they accomplished this season. The Gator Bowl deserves better. tOSU, only because they haven't sucked quite as badly as Florida for most of the season.
Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio
Wisconsin vs. Oregon Pasadena, Calif.
Great game. Oregon should win it, but the B10 has done nicely in this game as of late. Sorry Dins - I think I'm gonna have to suck Goob's butthole on this one.
I like Oregon's team speed, so I'm gonna go with them. Plus, as I said above, 1,000 years ago when I was a kid, the Pac winning this game was in the "death and taxes" category. That might not be terribly relevant anymore, but old habits (i.e., me taking the Pac champ in this game) die hard.
Tostitos Fiesta
Stanford vs. Oklahoma State Glendale, Ariz.
Stanford. Okie State hasn't played a defense all year long.
Agreed, I'll go with Stanford.
Allstate Sugar
Michigan vs. Virginia Tech New Orleans
Jesus. They've killed what used to always be a great bowl game. I'm gonna go with Mishitgan - just because VTech is too inconsistent.
Michigan, pretty much for the reasons you stated.
Discover Orange
West Virginia vs. Clemson Miami
If you get the Clemson that played yesterday, they'll win easily. If Boyd decides he's going to suck shit (along with the Tiger D), WVU wins. I'll still take my chances with Clemson.
Upset special here. I think West Virginia pulls this one out.
AT&T Cotton
Kansas State vs. Arkansas Arlington, Texas
Arkie could actually run away with this one pretty badly.
Arkansas, although I suspect this game will be more competitive and entertaining than you expect.
BBVA Compass Bowl
SMU vs. Pittsburgh Birmingham, Ala.
Who the fuck cares? SMU, just because I hate Pitt.
Another tough call, I'll take Pitt.
GoDaddy.com
Arkansas State vs. Northern Illinois Mobile, Ala.
I'll take the Huskies, though I might bet on Oregon State.
Northern Illinois
Allstate BCS National Championship Game
No. 1 LSU vs. No. 2 Alabama New Orleans
For all the marbles. I'm going with LSU. I think Les will get them to play a FULL game. Lots of folks really don't understand that LSU really didn't play worth a shit against 'Bama last time. It's starting to look like a destiny thing. Oh - I know there will be the "Payback" issue, but LSU's just got too much luck this year. Word to the wise, though - if LSU let's 'Bama get up on them by 2 TD's in the first half - it's OVER. They aren't going to mount any comebacks or little boys butts (sup, Peen State) against 'Bama's D. Well - then again - the 2010 Iron Bowl says "Bwahaha". It'll be another snot-kicking game - as it should be.
I think LSU has just a bit more overall talent than 'Bama, so I'll go with LSU here.

Borderline call. Remove 'close' and what are you left with there? Rather stunted phrasing, I'd say. I'll give him a pass because 'proximity' may be qualified without automatically rendering it redundant: equal proximity, near proximity, lessening proximity, etc.

Still, I like the cut of your jib, Dins.

As you point out, "proximity" can be qualified... just not with "close."

Its ability to be qualified is in stark contrast to my pet peeve -- "unique."

90% of America, you keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I'd say 'proximity' can be qualified with 'close,' precisely because it can also be qualified with other spatial descriptions. By definition, 'proximity' needn't describe any specific degree of 'closeness.'

I don't see this one as being similar to qualifying 'unique,' which, yes, is just asinine.

I'd say that you're fairly unique in your use of this as the penultimate example.

Sorry, no sale MW.

I'm vehemently opposed to adding definitions to words just because uneducated louts misused the word long enough.

They also think "amuck" is an acceptable alternate spelling.
