Sounds like you're having a good time, Whitey. Yeah, Northeastern Arizona can be a bit of a shithole... with nothing but Indians running the little truck stops on the way.

Leaving Flagstaff... should be a bit nicer as you'll be going through some nice forest and you could take a little side trip to the Grand Canyon from the highway. Of course, I'd make a day of it. It's just about an hour off the Interstate.

Remember, you only have 10 days... so, I'd roll through Kingman and head to Vegas and wouldn't stop and I'd spend the night in Death Valley. Nice golf course out your back window if that's what you please to start the day.

Head over the Panamint Valley and on to 395 and make your way up to Lake Tahoe.

Then you'll have a long ass trip back home on the I-80 through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska and back down into Kansas/Missouri.

Not that I've ever traveled these roads on a yearly basis for the last 20 years.

I do take a month off as I head back to San Francisco from Houston to enjoy the "Journey".

If you want the ocean, Wags, you should get yours and your family's butts on over to PCH/101. Go check out Pismo Beach, SLO, Hearst Mansion, Monterey, Santa Cruz, Gay Bay, Marin, Sonoma, Mendacino, Humbolt, trek into the U&L.

Just don't drive through it all without stopping to take a look every now and then.

You really are this stupid...

Sound advice, Scott. Dude hasn't been on vacay with wifey in years and he's gonna bring her somewhere to shoot stuff.

Just excellent.

They have Blue Man in Vegas, too? (No B-Smack, I did not know.)

If Wags is going to take out a shitty Vegas act, I think I'd rather see him do Dice Clay...

You only have 10 days. Save the left coast for another trip.

My suggestion.

Spend a day or two at the Grand Canyon, then head north through the Utah canyonlands. Check out Bryce Canyon. It is magnificent. Then drive North to Jellystone Park. If you are in to seeing wildlife, it the best spot on earf with the possible exception of the Serrengetti plain in Africa. Then turn right, check out My Rushmore on the way back.

smackie, his wife has never seen an ocean. She wants to see one. Can't see an ocean in Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota or during the return trip home to Missouri.

And ucant is right, of course. No one in their right mind who isn't married to a total Doomsday Prepper nutjob would even consider taking their wife to go shoot machine guns and grenade launchers as part of their first vacation in ten years.

Gotta agree.

If you neglect taking your OL on a vacation for over a decade, giving her access to a gun should be below last on your to-do list

Take her to the spa at Mandalay Bay Hotel and then the gun range.

Then they can hop in the car on an extended weekend and drive to the gulf. It ain't that far. I will give you that the gulf ain't exactly the pacific ocean, but, it is Ocean and has some fairly nice beaches.....with water warm enough for something other than sea lions. If he continues his roadie to the left coast, it's gonna pretty much be all driving. Not enough time to do the trip justice. What's the point of driving all the way to a socal beach, so you can hop out of the car, run down to the surf, stick your toe in and then drive straight home.

They are in the rockies during a very nice time of the year. Stay there for a few days and enjoy it. 10 day trips to cali frm KC should be done on airplanes.

They could make some money out here if they wanted to stay a few days and pick some fruit or vegetables. Asparagus is in season and I hear it's really good work if you can get it.

Agreed. Can't beat a roadie when you have the time to enjoy it at a proper leisurely pace, but the California coastline is simply too vast to include on a ten-day, multi-state roadie beginning and ending in KC.

I'm thinking Wags is in Vegas by now or close to it, hopefully he goes north out of Kingman and drives across the Hoover Dam and takes the tour. The trip to the California coast will be around 7 hours. It all depends on what route you want to take to return to the Midwest. I-15 will take you southwest the longer you stay on it as it heads towards San Diego, as you reach Barstow you can go west on 58 to Bakersfield then the 46 towards the Central Coast or continue on the 15 further south towards the So Cal Beaches. Both places are different, So Cal is heavy traffic, busy but loaded with hot women everywhere and a lot of cool things to do in Long beach, Newport, Laguna ect. Central Coast is stunning this time of year, slower pace, great wineries & breweries, great food and the countryside is in full bloom with wildflowers. The only way I would go this route is if you plan your return via I-80 east out of The Gay Bay towards Reno and Salt Lake City, there's a lot to see going up the coast and you'll have to pick and choose no doubt, you can use US101 to save time, the PCH is awesome but a long haul timewise as it snakes the coastline.. Out of So Cal it's a turnaround on I-15 going back Northeast to Salt Lake City. Either way you'll have fun. Enjoy your trip

I made the round trip commute between northern San Diego (Rancho Penasquitos) and Vegas every week for a year in the 90s. 300 miles, and my target was 3.5 hours (usually closer to 4), but I was commuting during light traffic, driving to Vegas on Sunday night and back to CA on Thursday or Friday night. It was funny driving from Vegas to California the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. I'd be cruising at 85 past a 20 mile parking lot outside of Barstow.

Hoover Dam was an engineering marvel, too bad it was a 100 freaking degrees walking around that bitch. The people who built that structure were some badass motherfuckers.

on to Vegas...

stayed an extra night since I was ahead a few $$$. That was a mistake, of course, and I freaking knew it before making the call. But I expected to be poor when I left, so it's no surprise. I won't bore you with details, but Vegas is an aggravating place that I was glad to put in the rearview mirror. I have no desire to go back, ever.

No time or funds left for Cali... maybe someday.

'holic, I've been to Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore, the Grand Canyon, Arches Canyonlands NP, etc... I've whitewater rafted the Arkansas river thru the Royal Gorge and Browns Canyon... twice.

But until today, had never driven I-15 to I-70 thru southern and then central Utah. I-70 starts (or ends, depending on which direction you're heading) at I-15 and it has to be one of the most desolate, least traveled and breathtakingly beautiful stretches of highway in the country.

I joked with the wife that it was Roadrunner and Coyote country, some of my favorite cartoon characters as a kid along with Foghorn Leghorn. I always rooted for the Coyote, same reason I root for the Royals I guess.

Anyways, I'm posting this from the Super 8 in Grand Junction, CO. Long drive to KC tomorrow, probably 14 hours, but this is my last night in a motel for awhile. Maybe I'll make it back in time for Tune Town.

It's called "hot breakfast."

When we stay at any of the Choice chain hotels, the boss always has to ask "what's for breakfast tomorrow?" Kind of a running joke. We already know it's powdered eggs, powdered eggs with sausage reheated potato wedges, reconstituted gravy to put on your reheated potatoes, stale bagels/assorted toast, cereal out of the hopper, and juice out of the reconstituted juice machine... and coffee.

The eggs are pretty fucking awful, but not as bad if you pair them with the sausage on each bite. It looks like microwaved sausage, so you know Mikey would love it, but it's actually edible.

Maybe they do things different here Out West -- the sausage is just small chunks in the powdered eggs. You have the choice of sausage or no sausage in your powedered eggs, but not sausage by itself.

I forgot about the DIY waffle maker, too... which is almost always broken at any Choice Hotels I stay at.

I'm guessing many of us here are intimately familiar with that breakfast... unfortunately.

Been staying at a ma and pa sort of hotel lately, which actually cooks breakfast fresh... at 9AM, unfortunately, since it means I'm working 10-6 (I'd take 8-4 if I had my druthers).
