Okay, I'm sure in a city of 190,000 people, there's at least one person who calls in sick when we get buried with snow. You got me. But those are the same people who call in sick because they have a runny nose, a hangover, a hang nail, etc.

Why the fuck would anybody drive to Blythedale when there's a Hy-Vee Store 3 blocks from my house? And why would I need to "stock up" for a one day, 10" snow? Jesus, Wags, we aren't getting hit with nuclear fallout, just a little snow.

Sunny and about 60 in Oxnard where I was today. Really a beautiful fucking day, with just a few wispy clouds and air so clear I couldn't believe I was only 60 miles from downtown LA. That's what happens when a nice little rainstorm moves out of SoCal and makes its way into flyover country.

Hope you guys are all OK. I wouldn't mind having a snow day once in a while.

We had some hail on the ground yesterday and I thought about it...but I sacked up made my way into the office anyway.

I was on the road for over seven hours total today. To get from my house to Oxnard I had to drive right through the middle of downfuckingtown LA. It took me four hours to go 165 miles (all on freeways) this morning about half of that was primarily stop and go traffic. I don't know how anybody can live up there and deal with that shit every day.

Relax, Mace. Snow has been known to fall in these parts in I-wegian proportions before, and we've all managed to survive somehow. The foot of snow we received in three hours, though, I would imagine would gum the works of most municipalities not named Lake Oswego. Whatever. Hard to get from A-to-B with semis jack-knifed all over your main thoroughfares, and I'm guessing most of those boys weren't local either. Probably from Sam's part of the country. Regardless. We had a weather event, and bein' the old fucks we are, we chose this medium to vent.

Area truckers called the local blowtorch to attest that today was the worst they'd seen in 30 years. Hell, I remember the white knuckles driving my old box truck down a state highway with furrowed lanes of 18" snow either side, and another trip to St. Joe that saw over 200 cars strewn all over the Interstate. If these old boys say it's the worst the've ever seen, then I'm good with it. Better them than me.

A normal 30 minute commute, if you were lucky, woulda cost you at least three hours today, if not a trip to the ditch. Hell, the largest grocery chain in the city announced that it was clsoing today, due to the weather. That's never happened here before. Doubtless, Mace, you and BSmack would be steadfastly manning your posts while the rest of the Kansas City metro exercised common sense. Essential personnel, I suppose. Bode you. :meds:

Reading Wags snowplow and Truman's logistical truck count smack is fucking hilarious. Impressive storm, no doubt, but get a grip guys. We don't get much snow in these parts, but we got about 18 inches in 08, for about 5 days. We go about our business, in our 4 wheel drives, with our wood stove heat, generators in the yard, barbeques fired up, and beer in the snow banks. We go out and deliver meals on wheels, and we loaded up our tractors, back hoe,and skid loader and made about 15K in 3 days clearing snow so the "normal " people could get around.

I had a consulting work gig in Grand Rapids back in about 03 when one of those storms came through. Business as usual, never missed a beat. Fucking flyover weather pussies.

This shit will all be gone in a few days. I see the storm warning area is getting smaller, but I do have to rack that graphic this morning, it was one of the largest I have seen in years.

Just reportin' the news, Der. This storm was far from apocalyptic. Just sayin' that Ma Nature had the trots in a hurry on our burg, and the locals struggled to keep up. Meanwhile, the roadways were pretty much impassible, and it shut down the town. I didn't have to go out today - other than to shovel the drive - so I didn't.

Was in Waco Monday - 78 and sunny. Gettin' too old for this shovelin' snow shit. Folks in Texas think right politically, and the weather is agreeable. I'm of a mind to move...

Truman:

If you got 4" of snow an hour, then you did get dumped on and, yes, it would gum up traffic on the Interstates and freeways with jack-knifed trucks and accidents. I get that. The point I was trying to make was that we don't have a high volume of traffic in my community and no freeways or Interstates to navigate traveling to work. They may close school so the buses don't have to navigate the rock roads that haven't been plowed but everyone else knows how to get to their jobs.

But if Wags wants to keep running his fucking mouth about me "living off the government" or any other bullshit, then I'm going to stick a boot in his mouth.....even if he is the village idiot around these parts.

So, you never missed a day of work because of snow?

How far from work do you live? Do you have any hills to speak of in your area? Have you ever had 2 ft in one shot?

I can see being able to always make it if you have to travel 4 very flat miles with a 4x4 and never more than a ft of snow.

If you lived where I live and you had to go to work 2 weeks ago saturday at 7 AM I can gotdamguarantee your streak would have ended unless you had a snowmobile. 3 ft of snow overnight will do that.

As for what wags did, for once in his sorry life, he was smart. Even if you do have a vehicle capable of getting there, if work can get by fine without you, why get on the road and deal with morons not smart enough to drive safely in that white shit? Yeah, you live in the sticks, so your mpm2 (morons per square mile) is lower, but you still have them.

Dude, I walked across my yard through that stuff, once, trying to find my favorite extension cord. Could I make it through 2 miles if my life depended on it? Yeah, I suppose. Would I walk through it to get to work to keep my 30 year streak alive? No fuggen way. Maybe if I had a pair of snowshoes I'd do it just for the hell of it.

Trust me on this one, this was a streak busting storm. Your transportation choices saturday morning were snowmobile, snowshoe or helocopter.

Or, in my part of the country, on a horse. I've seen that happen on several occasions.

I didn't go to work to keep any streak alive. I went to work just because I was expected to be there and didn't want to waste a day of vacation due to the snow.

using a vacation day to avoid a monster snow storm isn't a waste, it's the reason you save up some vacation in the first place. I took another one today because I still haven't shoveled out my driveway. Not looking forward to that back breaking, heart attack inducing job but nobody is going to do it for me.

Called my boss last night and told him I might not be in today. He understands and might not be in himself. He's one of the guys who got stuck on an overpass yesterday and had to walk the last few miles home.

And while my job is as essential as anybody's at my company, no freight is moving in or out yesterday or today. So this was the perfect opportunity to burn 16 hours of vacation.

I haven't been on a forklift since June of 2010, when I got moved to the front office to do order entry and now purchasing. I got moved to the whse in 2009 when we laid off 80 % of the crew and they had to find something for me to do. We damn sure didn't have many orders to run thru the shop at that time. But I was a supervisor in the shop for the 15 years prior to that. And yes, I drove a forklift then, too. Best damn forklift operator that place has ever had. You try moving a 25 ft long bundle of metal down a 12 ft wide aisle.

ok, back to shoveling. I called work and they want me to come in.

a little tip for the next blizzard. park your clapped out old monte carlo or whatever the fukk it is close to the end of the driveway, facing the road. makes for an easier dig out.

or just stock up on rice light and wait it out. you are in KC, the snow ain't gonna hang around that long.
