I suppose the entire history of his melts could have been confined to that two minute clip. Sounds reasonable.Truman wrote:Coach gets 20 hours a week to practice his team in a season that runs from August to March, and two minutes of video has you peeing down your leg in righteous indignation.
Look, coach can do whatever he damn well pleases and I don't care if he gets shit-canned or not. It's up to the university to set their own standards on what they feel is acceptable behavior. My take is three-fold:
a) If you can't "get through" to your players without acting like a petulant little child who just got his Xbox taken away from him then you're a shitty communicator and a shittier coach. Dial up Coach K if you need some pointers.
b) Being forceful and tough are good things. I don't see those things when I watch that vid, I just see a sad little man power-tripping over a bunch of kids whose lives, scholarships and futures rest entirely in his hands. You apparently see something else.

Guess what? Nobody died. That-which-does-not-kill-you-only-makes-you-stronger n' junk.
Good point. I'll bet if Rice had promised Mary Kay makeovers to his players every time they set a screen correctly, he would've finished 38-16.R-Jack wrote:16-38 in conference. Can you figure out that it wasn't working on your own, or do you need a basketball chucked at your head to help you?
You wanna can Rice for his record? I'll listen to that. Hell, I'd listen to termination-for-cause if he wore a clown suit instead of a coat and tie on the sideline. But don't you try to tell me that Rice's behavior in a two minute clip was SO egregious that he needed to be shit-canned on the spot. You act as if this were an isolated incident. It isn't. I've read too many accounts from too many programs of how coaches send a message. The difference is that it's never been captured on video for panty-
The only thing Rice hurt with his kids were their feelings. If you can't recognize a ball flung in exasperation as a message, then maybe you oughtta go sell ties for a living...

Don't necessarily disagree with you here either. He very well may be a shitty coach and a shitty communicator. A 16-38 record pretty much plays that out. But if you truly believe that Coach Kreshewski or Bill Self sing the Messiah while leading their kids to 30-6 records, then you are painfully naïve.MgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote:a) If you can't "get through" to your players without acting like a petulant little child who just got his Xbox taken away from him then you're a shitty communicator and a shittier coach. I see a coach trying to send a message, and a message board poster that has issues with his manhood. So how many kids did he kill, Blue? Wally Judge transferred to Mike Rice's program. Manhood, I have no problem with. I didn't see any manhood, that's my point. I saw a little bitch flailing about with zero control over the situation. The fact you found that as a display of "manhood" is amusing. Maybe it's just a generational thing. You're his dad and you support a coach doing that shit?
What the fuck is wrong with you?
Well, he's right. How else do you get a player over that fear? Backrubs and reacharounds? It's not that big of a deal. A ball player should be over the fear of getting beaned in Little League. I was pitching leaning into motherfucker when I was in Little League. Of course that was mostly because I couldn't hit for shit so I was stoked to take any opportunity to get on base. The head coach in the third base coaches box yelled "you gotta wear that".
At the high school level of competition, the kids should have an understanding of the game and be playing it the way it should be played and playing it to win. If that means taking one on the shoulder or the leg, then grab your pouch and get on base. It's only gonna sting for a bit.

Who the fuck is talking about letting yourself getting beaned in the head? Nobody. So you can leave the strawman out of it.KC Scott wrote:You don't need to coach a kid to move if a fastball is headed towards his head - it's a natural reaction
And the "natural reaction" to a fastball flying at any of your extremities is to get out of the way. That is exactly why some kids need to be coached out of it unless, of course, your objective is to field a team of frightened pussies who will let the pitcher completely dominate the plate and the situation.
Any player worth even half of a fuck knows enough to do a little ole dance, get tagged and take a base. Nobody is asking a kid to facefuck a fastball. Obviously if the ball is coming at your head, you get the fuck out of the way.

Re: Opinions on the Mike Rice Firing
There are a couple things here. The first being that schmick's kid wasn't playing Little League and the second being that, for some bizarre reason, you claim that a kid playing Little League can't see a pitch thrown by a Little League pitcher. It's not like they're getting brushed off the plate by Bob Gibson or Nolan Ryan.KC Scott wrote:And again this is you showing everyone you have no clue what the fuck you're talking about
In Little league - Every pitch is a fucking fastball. No one coaches or teaches change ups till at least 14
In Little League the batter has approx .5 second to try and pick up the ball and decide if he's swinging or it's a ball
In Little League there's No Kid picking up the path of the ball from the pitchers hand and in that half second deciding this fastball is coming in at waist level so he's turning a hip into it
Face it. You are a pussy who coached pussies to be even bigger pussies. Stop acting like these kids are going to have their legs blown off if they turn into a pitch.

Re: Opinions on the Mike Rice Firing
Why am I not surprised Schmick has zero confidence in his son to learn the lesson without taking a beating. Most kids would have learned that lesson well enough on the walk back to the dugout. Doesn't feel too good letting your teammates down when you know the game would have been tied had you taken a pitch in the leg. Of course Schmick's kid never got to show he learned that lesson without the corporal punishment.schmick wrote:When my son was in 10th grade he was up to bat in the top of the 7th with the bases loaded and his team down a run. The pitcher threw a curve ball and my son moved his leg to get out of the way of the ball. The head coach in the third base coaches box yelled "you gotta wear that". The next pitch my son hit a fly ball to right center that was caught and the game was over. The next day at practice the coach took him to the cages and pointed the pitching machine at him, he had to allow himself to get hit by 5 pitches, every time he got out of the way of one he had to do 50 push ups and run a lap around the out side of the baseball stadiums. After about 9 total pitches he was hit by the 5th one. Coach started him again the next day and my son learned the lesson.
That's coaching. Calling players names or throwing a basketball at them at 15 MPH is coaching, thats what it takes to play these sports, if you dont like it, play soccer with the rest of the girls

If a kid can't hit you teach him how to hit, you don't teach him how to take one to the flesh. If Johnny Strikeout is super excited to show up to the ball field that day to take one to the ribs because he sucks ass, good for him, but I never saw that in my time playing LL. Sounds pretty odd. All the kids I knew who couldn't hit or sucked in general didn't really enjoy playing, just did it to appease their Toejam father.

Re: Opinions on the Mike Rice Firing
I only played against one pitcher in Little League who I couldn't pick up. He was a flamethrower and a half. Fortunately he couldn't throw anything but his 60mph heat. When we played his team and he was pitching I would just throw my bat out and hope I made contact. The day I got a single off him was one of the highlights of my LL career. But everybody else I could hit. I batted somewhere in the .400 area. And I wasn't any great shakes, just a banjo hitter with a decent eye. My OBP was somewhere over .500.
So I ask, why the fuck would I ever stand in front of a pitch when I have a better than 50/50 chance of standing on first anyway?

Who gives a fuck what you coach in Little League? Of course you don't have to coach it, they're getting pegged all the time regardless.KC Scott wrote:I don't coach any of them to try and get HBP
The question at hand is what are you going to do when they're playing varsity ball and still scared to get hit? You can't play at that level if you're scared of the ball. You either master that fear or you quit playing.

pretty simple, really. If a hard thrown object is coming your way, you naturally try to avoid said object.

My daughter was one helluva' good hitter, now she coaches and people pay her $20 an hour for hitting lessons. I never once saw her get hit by a pitch.

actually, a lot of people care about softball, mv. Those girls have as much heart and will to win as any boy. More, probably
Anyways, this one time when she was 7 years old or so, some wild big kid who had no business pitching hit her in the stomach and knocked the wind out of her. I was so pissed, I wanted to beat that kids ass and then his stupid coach for letting him pitch in the first place. I'm still pissed about that.
After that, she never got hit by another pitch.
actually, she did get hit this one time when she played kid pitch baseball. She played with the boys from 6-11 years old before I forcibly moved her to competitive softball after some politician of a baseball coach decided to draw names from a hat for what position they played for a game. She drew 3rd base. She's a lefty and a 1st baseman. That was her last baseball game.War Wagon wrote:I never once saw her get hit by a pitch.

Re: Opinions on the Mike Rice Firing
This thread is like visiting the Twilight Zone. I played ball against the same teams Shmick is talking about. I played in roughly the same era that mvscal played. I had an "old school" coach when I played for one of the highest ranked high school teams in the country.
I hardly recognize a single thing I'm reading here. Mgo and KC Scott are the only ones making sense, and they're the only ones describing anything close to the day-to-day reality I witnessed.
Being taught to get beaned? Forcing kids to stand in front of pitching machines in order to get beaned? Little Leaguers gleefully trying to get beaned?
On what planet is this taking place again? Did all you Patton-esque fucks play Little League in North Korea, or something?
And hell, maybe the rules have changed (I believe they have), but when I was in Little League we certainly threw more than just fastballs. That little dick Jack McDowell was absolutely throwing hooks at me, and vice versa, and we all threw change-ups. There sure weren't a whole lot of kids getting beaned, though, and certainly no one ever tried to get drilled.
I don't know. Maybe mvscal played in a league stocked with the least naturally talented kids ever, to where getting beaned afforded people a better chance of getting on base than simply waiting for such a wild pitcher to walk them or, god forbid, surrender a base hit.
Weird stories all the way around. Kind of fun reading, though. Mind-boggling, but fun.

But no, at no point did I ever witness any situation whereby a coach had players practice getting beaned, and I can't even imagine such a thing occuring with Little Leaguers. Well, okay, maybe in Taiwan, but not here.
