Four from the 50's had their body of work cut all too short, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, Eddie Cochrane, and Gene Vincent. Holly and Valens of course died young in that plane crash. Holly was a prolific writer and music experimenter whose legacy continues. Valens might have opened up a whole genre of Spanish influenced rock. Cochrane died very young in a car crash that injured Gene Vincent severely enough that his contributions were cut short too. Needless to say there were probably countless black rockers who got lost in the era of Jim Crow. The 50's were an exciting time for teens. We had music that was not our parents and had radios and record players so we could listen to it. My two very favorites from back then were Bill Haley & the Comets and Fats Domino. Hands down fun good time rock and roll.

Simply my opinion tart. I am not going to go into some long winded debate or some discussion on musical talent. I pretty much define "greatest" in relation to this thread as STRAIGHT CASH MONEY HOMEY! Show me a band that made more $$ in the 70's, then we may talk briefly.

Yeah, rock music isn't dead, one's desire to seek it out is dead. Plenty of great stuff out there, in all genres, if you're willing to look past your FM radio dial. It's been a long time since "good music" coincided with "popular music." Which I think is both good and bad.

But heartland tards like kcdave want everything spoon-fed. When he gets off the expressway, he wants all his dining options within a half mile radius with big brightly displayed roadside logos guiding him. There's probably a delicious mom and pop joint scattered somewhere in that mess, but why bother to look? You may not have enjoyed the meal that you settled for, but hey, at least you didn't exert any effort in the search.

Skynyrd has one cut on one of their albums, where they have Duane Allman and Dickie Betts playing live with them. I am not finding it, but heard it the other day. Skynyrd did great covering JJ Cale stuff too.

As for Journey, I think Wheel In The Sky and Anyway You Want It are pretty decent songs. How they devolved from that to what they became in the 80's... same reason REO, Styx, and Foreigner did. All trying to please record company dicks and become popular with the 13-16 year old girl demographic or whatever the hell it was they were after.

At least The Cars never sold out, not to that degree.

No, the Cars could never be accused of "selling out", they just were what they were, a solid band with an original sound. Great? Eh, I would say very good, not great. However, once Ben Orr passed, they never were quite the same.

As to Journey/REO Speedwagon, Journey did lose a more rocking edge by the addition of Steve Perry, but they gained a pretty amazing vocalist, despite what you feel about his influence. Now just imagine if REO had retained original vocalist Terry Luttrell. Ever hear that dude's vocals? His high pitched wail might have worked okay for Yes ripoff Starcastle, but REO made the right move by running him. Can't even imagine a tune like "Riding the Storm Out" by Luttrell.

I don't know what genre you place The Cars in. All I know is that when they came out with that first monster album, I had never heard anything like it. And it took awhile for them to grow on me but before long I was digging it. Then when Candy-O came out, I was like hooked.

I'm no music expert, but I think a whole lot of bands came along after The Cars trying to capture that sound. Few succeeded. Cheap Trick, maybe.

The Cars were the most boring "rock" concert I have ever been to. They came out, played, left, just like video Wags posted. Didn't bother to say Hi, Bye, or kiss my ass. I would not be surprised if sound had been recorded prior and was being played back. It sounded EXACTLY like the records. If I had wanted to listen to the album, I could have sat the fuck at home.

Never got to see them in concert myself, so I couldn't say. I will say that the most disappointing concert I ever went to was Aerosmith in the early 80's. Just white noise and bad feedback. And this was at Memorial Hall which supposedly had great acoustics.

Best concerts I've ever been to? Foghat at Starlight closely followed by BTO at Verizon.
