Funny, I'm usually wearing shorts, at least outdoors in the daytime, until it gets down to 60 or so.

One thing I've noticed about most if not all of the cold weather transplants around here is that while we keep our t-stat in the winter set to 65 night 68 day they always seem to have theirs set at about 78 degrees. Unbearable.

OK, just walked up to the store. It's 17 and snowing. Around here, we consider 17 to be "holy fuck cold," as we rarely see it that low (but not the first time this winter). Hasn't snowed particularly hard, but steady all day -- maybe 2' on the ground so far.

Cars just weren't having any trouble. You frigid folk are lucky to drive in the cold snow stuff -- shit's got traction to it. Our usual rare snow is 32 degrees (and often warmer air temps) -- that shit is slick.

BTW - FUCK 17 and snowing. Might have to go drown my sorrows at the bar next door.

Rack the it's so cold in the D reset. That will never not be awesome.

So as much as I'd like to feel sorry for myself, at least I'm not them. And I'm not the dumb shit who crashed into a semi on the I-435 bridge over the Missouri river going into work today. That person had a really bad day while I drove by unscathed. That car was fucked up, the entire front end crushed like a pop can.

I hope the driver wasn't hurt too badly (unless they were driving a Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, etc. then I hope they got ejected into the swollen, ice filled river).

It's been a bitterly cold winter in southern Iowa this year but with less than the normal amount of snow. We had a 6" snow on Tuesday/Wednesday with more expected for the weekend, and I'm tired of shoveling the white shit, but at least it hasn't been a wet and heavy snow. I can see that I may have to buy a snow blower in the coming years to save my back and reduce the risk of a heart attack but I'll keep shoveling for the time being. The past few winters have been pretty mild in comparison but this year has been more typical of an Iowa winter. That said, I'm ready as hell to head for spring training in Arizona for a week and play a few rounds of golf.....and then head to Cancun with the wife later this winter. One of the advantages of being retired is not having to get out in the cold and snow to travel. Looking forward to 80 degree days and southerly breezes on the golf course this summer.

This year has been unusual up here in God's Country. We don't usually get a lot of snow once it gets below 15 degrees. This year we've had a number of significant snowfalls with really cold temps, and the streets have been greasier than I've ever seen. Snow stacked up in 32 degrees is sloppy, and they can lay down salt. But 3 inches of snow at 10 or 12 degrees tends to be fluffy and can't be salted. It just gets really slick. A few days back they had 130 cars in the ditch in one county. Good clean fun.

We have also had some of that "it's too fukking cold to snow.....but it is" bullshit. and goobs is right and dins is wrong. 32 degree snow goes where you put it and is allergic to salt. 15 degree powder laughs at salt and blows back into the road 5 minutes after the plow comes by. they do have some sort of nasty liquid shit though these days that works down to "holy shit, it's cold" temps. it also eats right through cars.

In the Valley, beside the major freeways, we don't dump a whole lot of money into snow removal/plowing, because it doesn't snow much. And when it does, it lasts a day or two - not worth spending the money on.

The mountain passes are a different story -- nonstop plows. Because it snows almost nonstop.

From Downtown Portland:

Bend has juniper trees (they're called "trees," anyway).

But Bend is in the desert. Deserts generally aren't noted for having lush vegetation... I think it kinda works the same way in California.

And Bend can get pretty cold in winter. 5 or 10 below is pretty asschipping there.

Coldest temp ever recorded in Oregon was -54, in Seneca. Seneca couldn't be more in the middle-of-fucking-nowhere, and has a population of about 2. A friend of mine's family owned a "hunting cabin" ($5000 house in the shithole town). He actually managed to get in a gunfight there... lovely place.

We had a beautiful 47 degree day yesterday that melted some of the snow and today I wake up to another 4" of new snow and getting my 4 wheel drive F-150 stuck in my driveway. Had to get my neighbor to come over in his Chevy Silverado to pull me out of the ditch. Embarrassing. Sounds like a few more inches of snow heading our way tomorrow too. Can't wait to fly out of here next month for a week of spring training and golf in Arizona.
