The fleet AVERAGE is already 5MPG above the old standard. Also, as you said not so eloquently, when gas prices are high, soccah moms be downsizing their rigs. Well prices were high until about a month ago and still could hardly be called optimal. Yea, I'd say 5MPG is a fair and conservative estimate.

Bri, pretty sure his point had more to do with "hundreds of millions" cars, not gas mileage std's.

Europeans are all but forced to purchase hybrids due to EU restrictions.
Expensive as hell to own/maintain a car here.
US and foreign car markets cannot be lumped together.

Cafe standards to little more than discourage new at sales. I would like to see the mountain of regs done away. This would open the market to new small innovations companies. Of course the large manufacturers don't want that so it liky won't happen.
