Yeah, they've only been around for 120 years. You might want to wait until they work out the all the bugs.

118, actually. I have a friend that has a Colt 1897, sitting new in the original box... pretty cool. I think he has every model up through the 1911.
And if you want to get really technical, while a jam in a revolver is extremely rare (like a primer coming loose), when a wheelgun does jam, it requires tools to get it working again. An auto requires .5 seconds of jacking the slide.
There is that.

The C-93 came out in 1893.

True, but the advantage the Colt had was that Luger wasn't involved with Mr. Browning's design, so it actually worked.

A. That's beside the point. 1893 = 121 years ago.
B. It did work and quite well.

JSC,
That looks like something the Lollipop Kids would carry. And put that thing in your pocket, then reach for the keys.......bye-bye genitalia.

Only idiots like Plexico carry a weapon in something other than a holster. Though I'm sure it would look good in your purse.

Comments?
You mentioned that you're partial to revolvers and S&W does make some nice small frame revolvers chambered for .22 WMR. Might not be a bad a option for a lady. Check out the 351PD.

Revolvers belong on the range and pig hunting.
For tactical and self protection use, you better figure out how to use a semi automatic pistol, and be able to do tactical reloads. With a revolver, you best resolve the situation in the 5 or 6 rounds you have, or your ass is toast while you are trying to reload.
Carrying a toy like that .22 even in a pocket holster is going to cause trouble.

Jsc810 wrote: What I like is the double safety on it, you have to be gripping the handle and there also is that safety on the trigger itself.
"Gripping the handle" safety is called a "beavertail." They've been in use over 100 years, because they're pretty effective. I've never been too sold on the trigger safety (I think Glock popularized it, and they thought it was acceptable as their only safety).
Springfield makes fine pistols.
If you don't mind spending some dough, the Colt Defender is pretty awesome.

Exactly. So a pocket derringer pistol with no trigger guard is just what a beginner should be sticking in their pocket. Darwin trolling again.

I have a couple hundred rounds through the XDS in .45, about 30 of them on Christmas Day. It is a pretty good gun, well made. They went to the double safety thing after some issues with them.
My 2011 Ruger LC9 has the thumb safety on it. This last year they went to a trigger safety on it. I have worked on my draw and presentation to where dropping the thumb safety is route movement. Even with that, I like a trigger safety. Thumbing down the safety adds another thought process / muscle memory move to a tactical situation, and a trigger safety takes the possibility of that fuck up away
Do not get a .45 for a beginning shooter and a woman to start with. I started my wife and daughter on a .22 semi auto, and brought them up to the current 9mm. All the dudes think you need the knock down of a .45, but they are a lot of gun to handle for beginners and women. A 9mm will do them just fine.

No matter how this is spun, not having your weapon on your person is an invitation for this to happen. Sad.

Completely agree. As nice as the Glocks function (mechanically, they're close to flawless), the safety setup has always made them unacceptable in my opinion.

Turns out she had the gun in a special "gun purse" her husband gave her for Christmas.
That worked out well.
Might make good promotional material for the gun purse maker, though.

how is it that anybody that's "been around guns all her life" was carrying a pistol with a chambered round inside of a Walmart?
anybody that's been around guns all their lives know you don't chamber a round into a semi auto pistol unless you're intending on shooting it in the next minute or so.....I'm guessing she'd been behaving badly with guns for a long time, and her luck just ran out.....really tragic though

Wrong and fail.
Millions of people carry semi automatic handguns with rounds chambered every day. Cops, concealed handgun carriers, military. That extra 1.5 seconds you that you will need to "chamber" that round before your foe blows your heart out or slices you from dick to sternum will cost you your life.
" Wait a minute homes..I need to chamber this round first." Trying to chamber a round under a stress tactical situation is an invitation to a major fuck up.
I have carried a 9mm every day for the last 10 years with a round chambered, and a thumb safety on. No problems so far.
Having no control of your weapon causes situations like what happened to her. I have children in my house everyday, and no weapon is left where they could have any contact with it at all. The weapon in her purse is not under her control.

I found the pink/black beretta I was looking for, a gun shop in Dallas. They're going to ship it to me. YAY! Well, to a gun shop near me.
Apparently I need to take a handgun safety course first. F California and it's stupid rules.
