A turbo prop is indeed a jet engine.

By your definition, only turbo jets are "jet engines". If you use this criteria for picking your flights, you will have a hard time finding one. I doubt there are any turbo-jets still in service in commercial aviation. Almost everything is a turbo fan, which doesn't really meet your criteria.

A turbo fan works more or less like a turbo prop. Both create thrust by spinning something a turbo fan can operate at higher speeds than a t-prop something about propeller tips not liking going supersonic.

The bottom line is that they both derive their power from a jet engine rather than an Otto cycle reciprocating engine.
