Not trying to take up for this stupid coon at all (because I would NEVER EVER hit a woman - never have, never will), but I do tend to get pretty intense when I play. I have been known on more than one occasion to throw a guitar down (have smashed a couple) if I'm fucked with when I'm playing. It's just not a good time for somebody to fuck with me.
I'm curious about this. Could you pxplain your mindset when performing? Perhaps I'm stereotyping, but I think those who play musical instruments well enough to perform in the public would find playing more of an artistic/left brain activity. So there would be less aggressiveness on the part of the performer. Is it a matter of feeling the need to maintain complete control of the situation?

Just think of how you would react if somebody were to run up behind you and blast an airhorn while you were trying to rape a small boy.

Hoffman remembers a bump. Townshend remembers a shove. Another witness recalls a bonk. A bump, a shove or a bonk are not descriptors of a violent assault and certainly not "shit beaten out of."
You are correct, Sinclair was in prison at the time. While he wasn't there, he has heard from many people regarding the incident. You are, admittedly, citing only Hoffman's perspective, which as we know, is clouded by acid. He is also the only one who recalls it the way he does. Everybody else who was there saw Pete clonk him on the dome with the guitar, knocking him down and stumbling off the stage. No, he wasn't beaten up, but again, Hoffman is underplaying it. "Violent assault" is an exaggeration, but it wasn't a "non-event". There's audio of the incident on Youtube and elsewhere. A hell of a lot of people cheered Townshend on for his antics and it has made for a nice little piece of rock lore.

Can you not read?
Everybody else who was there saw Pete clonk him on the dome with the guitar, knocking him down and stumbling off the stage.
And their perceptions
weren't clouded by acid or a natural tendency to embellish a story to make it seem impressive than it really was? Neither of the principals involved thought it was any big deal.
