(CNN) — After an appearance alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Monday, President Donald Trump paused to push back against reports that he had disclosed highly classified information to the Russians.

"Just so you understand, I never mentioned the word or the name 'Israel','" Trump told reporters in Jerusalem. "Never mentioned it during that conversation. They were all saying I did. So you had another story wrong. Never mentioned the word 'Israel'."

The story Trump was reacting to was this one, which ran a week ago in the Washington Post. And the thing about that story is that, well, the word "Israel" is never mentioned. Not one time.

As Greg P. Miller, one of the authors of that story, tweeted: "Trump still non-denying denying that he shared classified intel with Russian officials."

In a follow-up story, the New York Times reported -- citing anonymous sources -- that the information that Trump had passed along had come to the United States from Israel. But even in that piece there is no allegation that Trump mentioned the word "Israel" in his Oval Office meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Trump is the denying an allegation that, literally, no news organization made. He's also implicitly confirming that, yes, he did talk to the Russians about classified information. While the president has total freedom to de-classify material, the White House has urged media organizations -- including CNN -- not to report on the specific information Trump passed along due to how highly sensitive it is.

Why?

That's always the toughest question when it comes to diving Trump's motivations. But, I can think of two obvious reasons:

1. He's showing off in front of Netanyahu: Remember that, at heart, Trump is a showman. And he likes to perform on the big stage when he knows lots and lots of important people are watching. He also knows that Netanyahu is well aware of the reporting that Trump passed along information from Israel to the Russians and wants to publicly combat the issue. Even if what he is saying just doesn't gibe with the facts.

2. He's trying to change the subject: Trump is a master at deflection. The ongoing story of his Feb. 14 meeting with the Russians is a total disaster for him and one that he and his White House team haven't figured out a good answer for yet. So it's possible Trump is free-lancing -- denying a claim no one made as a way to say "This is all fake news. And I've already addressed it."

Because trust in the media is so low -- particularly among Trump's base -- his strategy of making up an allegation that he can then deny might work. But that doesn't change the basic underlying facts. Which, to reiterate because it's important, are these: Trump told two Russian officials highly classified information in the Oval Office. Period.

Nothing Trump said today in Israel disputes those facts -- or explains them.

Washington (CNN) — The father of former FBI Director James Comey says his son was fired because President Donald Trump was "scared to death of him."

In a phone interview with CNN on Saturday, J. Brien Comey called his son's firing last week "a Trump deal."

"[Comey] didn't give him 100% loyalty, and he demands that of people who work with him," the 86-year-old said. "[Comey] said he would give 100% honesty, but not loyalty."

Comey said his son, whom he described as a "straightforward and honest guy," was fired "because Jim tells the truth, (while) Trump runs around lying most of the day."

The remarks come after a tumultuous couple of weeks for the Trump administration, which saw Trump fire the FBI director May 9 and then undermine his own senior aides on his reasons for doing so -- moves then capped by a report in The New York Times that Trump discussed the dismissal in meeting with senior Russian officials in the Oval Office the day after Comey's ouster.

"I just fired the head of the FBI," Trump told the Russians, according to a document summarizing the meeting that was read to the Times. "He was crazy, a real nut job. I faced great pressure because of Russia. That's taken off."

The White House did not respond immediately to a request for comment on J. Brien Comey's statements.

Unlike the former FBI director, who so far has kept quiet about his firing, Comey's father had some very strong words about the FBI director's dismissal.

"Why he was fired, I think, is Trump changes every day," he said. "He had three reasons three days in a row."

The elder Comey did not hide his own distaste for the President saying, "Oh my God, I think he should be impeached immediately -- yesterday. He's a very incompetent guy. He's out of his league."

But he conceded that he thought impeachment "a long shot."

"(Comey) could have been subservient to Trump, (but I told him) he was not going to do that ..." J. Brien Comey said, adding tongue-in-cheek: "Incidentally, I told him I thought he and Trump would testify side by side in front of these congressional committees. He just kind of laughed."

Comey's father said he has never been a fan of Trump and didn't vote for him: "I think the man should be in a home quite honestly, he's crazy as a hoot."

But he didn't vote for Hillary Clinton either. "I am not going to tell you what I think of her," he said. "We had lousy choices."

The elder Comey, who first spoke to New Jersey's The Record about his son's firing, said he preferred Republican Ohio Governor John Kasich during the 2016 Republican presidential primary because he "seemed like a very honest guy. He made a good impression on me. I thought he would make a good president."

Comey said he has a close relationship with his son, whom he sees on holidays, and had just spoken with him earlier Saturday morning. He is expecting a visit from Comey and his wife to his New Jersey home in a few weeks -- the same house where Comey grew up with his three siblings.

Comey is coping well with his termination and the storm that originated from it, his dad said.

"He's doing fine. He's a solid citizen, he has lots of opportunity," he said. "It was a dumb thing to get rid of him. A loss for the FBI."

When asked what his son thinks will now happen to the FBI's investigation of contacts between Trump campaign aides and Russians, Comey said he didn't know.

"We never talked about that stuff," he said.

Gehl Foods in Germantown has been linked to a fatal botulism outbreak in California and the company says it is working with authorities to determine what caused the contamination.

“We are aware of the isolated botulism outbreak connected to a gas station in Walnut Grove, California, and are praying for the individuals battling the illness and their families,” said Eric Beringause, chief executive officer of Gehl Foods, in a statement. “We were notified by the FDA that Gehl Foods’ nacho cheese was among the products seized at the Walnut Grove gas station during inspection.

“We immediately retested samples from the relevant lot of cheese, and it remains clear of any contamination. To ensure the integrity of those test results, we also sent multiple samples to an independent lab, which confirmed our findings.”

One man has died from the outbreak and at least nine others are hospitalized.

Symptoms of botulism include, double or blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth and muscle weakness. People experiencing these symptoms should contact their health care providers immediately.

Health officials in California said the suspected source — a nacho cheese sauce — was removed from the gas station May 5 and is no longer being sold.

“We are working closely with federal, state and local health authorities to determine what caused the specific outbreak on site,” Beringause said in the statement. “According to the California Department of Public Health, there is no ongoing risk to the public.

“Gehl’s facilities remain safe for food production and all of our food samples continue to test negative for any contaminants. There is no recall of Gehl’s nacho cheese product.”

Walnut Grove is near Sacramento in northern California.

The California Department of Public Health, in a Facebook post, said the bacterium is odorless and colorless, making it impossible to tell if a food is affected.

C. botulinum is an anaerobic bacterium, meaning it can only grow in the absence of oxygen. Foodborne botulism occurs when C. botulinum grows and produces toxins in food prior to consumption. C. botulinum produces spores and they exist widely in the environment including soil, river and sea water.
