Back to the original topic, Rev. Graham was not a wealthy man. He lived in a modest home that was suitable for a large family, took very little income from the BGEA, and ran a very transparent organization and life to prevent the problems which plague so many high profile people. He had an independent auditor go through the business’ book and never was alone in a room with a woman who wasn’t his wife. He led such an exemplary life that regardless of his piety, no one here would mind having him as your neighbor.

True story: I went to a Billy Graham crusade in New York in the ‘70’s. As a speaker he was dynamic, on point, brief, and charismatic. He had little use for excessive talk or blather and his ministry was highly focused on presenting the Gospel to as many people as possible. As a result he talked to over 214 million people worldwide and can be credited for helping to overthrow the Soviet Union with his crusade he had there.

I challenge any of you naysayers or scoffers to go on YouTube and watch one of his sermons and afterward deny that he was ineffective as a speaker. You can’t do it.

What can I say? I find him a passionate and dynamic speaker who has a baritone voice that pleases the ear. I like how he gets immediately to his point, warms to the topic instantly, and obviously considers brevity to be next to Godliness. If only we had more public speakers like him today.

If he was honest and told everyone up front that is was all just a possibility and there was no evidence he was right I might agree with you. Plenty of bad people are good public speakers. He was a con man and should be reviled not revered.

But for him, it isn’t a mere possibility, but instead a certainty. While you may disagree with him and say that there is no evidence that backs up what he preached, he’d point to the whole universe and tell you that it is demanding that you acknowledge God.

Regardless of your views of him as a Christian, as a man he lived an admirable life that many people could stand to imitate and not come away with at the end of their lives feeling like they should have done something differently.

I never claimed Graham was solely responsible for overthrowing the USSR, only that he had a hand in it by convincing the Kremlin to let him in to speak to the Russian people. He smuggled Bibles in and distributed them to various underground churches, which along with the crusade he gave, ignited a longtime State suppressed desire for religion and meaning in ordinary Russians lives.
