There have been Mexicans in California for, oh, almost 400 years. Believe it or not, there are a few that aren't "ghettoising." There are more farms in San Diego County than any county in the US (and probably Canada), and a large part of the labor and, yes, owners, are Mexican or Mexican-American. I've been buying most of my produce directly from one guy for probably 15 years. I polished up my Spanish 40 years ago working in the kitchen at a German Restaurant in Del Mar. I was basically the translator between the German owner and the kitchen help, because he didn't speak Spanish, they didn't speak German, and none of them were too good at English.

My kids' high school was about 40% Latino. Most of your "border jumpers" don't actually stay around here.

California's a big place, and we were talking about where I live, which is not Los Angeles, weren't we?

BTW, your last link proved nothing. There are homeless shelters everywhere. I'm sure you searched diligently in Google for a picture of a homeless camp in my neighborhood, but couldn't find any.
There actually is a lot of "affordable" housing around here - relatively cheap apartments in our small downtown, a few mobile home parks, etc., along with multi-million dollar homes and everything in between (us).

The homeless problem in California is not just a function of a lack of affordable housing, which is a big part of the problem. Contributing to the problem is that a lot of people just want to live here, and I'm not sure what you can do about that. But also, as 88 said, there are a lot of people who just don't want to come off the street, no matter what you do for them. And it's a lot easier to get by here because you usually don't need more than a sweater to sleep outside.

No doubt the weather plays a part in the CA homeless population. But the policies of California do just as much.

When groups sue cities and counties to prevent homeless encampments from being removed CA draws more homeless. When you provide above average services for the homeless, you draw more.

My wife and I make regular donations and provide job training and job placement advice for a local non profit that works with homeless here in SA. A large number of our homeless are just passing thru. They want to make a few bucks to get their onward bus fare towards CA. Many move on when they have the fare for El Paso or Phoenix.

As 88 said there are a good number that just want no part of “normal” life and are happy on the streets.
