RIP (though after reading below, you may not wish for the "P")...
In the spring of 2017, mama & I were planning a vacation to Asheville, NC & Savannah, GA. At the time, Barflie was recording the radio shows Wolfman & I were doing and hosting the recordings on his server. I communicated with him often via text, phone, and email, and he was always good about returning calls & messages. I knew he lived fairly close to Asheville, so I figured we'd stop by to visit him. I tried multiple times to contact him before we left, but he didn't get back to me. I feared the worst, so I started checking the obituaries. Nothing.
Then mama did some detective work, which paid off. Unfortunately, what she found was worse than the worst I had feared. She discovered a newspaper article reporting that our interwebs fliend, Barflie, had been arrested for hosting and distributing kiddie porn. We knew his address (it was in the newspaper article), so when we were in Asheville, we went by his house. The front door appeared to have been assaulted with a battering ram. It would have been easy to enter, but we didn't. We called the local jail to see if he was being housed there; they confirmed he was and advised us when visiting hours were.
We went to the jail to visit him. We were able to spend ~10-15 minutes talking to him while he was handcuffed behind a very small bullet-proof glass window. He appeared to be a beaten-down old man who claimed to have been caught with a few "tasteful" shots of underage girls on his computer, and was somewhat optimistic that he'd be acquitted and released before long. That didn't happen. Instead, his lawyer was able to get him a series of continuances and he was transferred to another jail.
Late last year or early this year, we learned that his case had been dismissed and he was released. I tried to contact him but was unsuccessful. Some more detective work was performed, and an announcement from a funeral home in GA said that Barflie died on 30 April. It's possible that a judge dismissed his case because of his failing health, or there simply may not have been enough evidence to proceed with prosecution.
At any rate, Barflie is now among the T1B'ers who have gone down for the dirtnap.
