What was the tiff between Nadal and the Italian? It seemed a bit prolonged as far as their post-match handshake at the net.

I only saw highlights of the match.

Sonego was apparently bent because I guess Nadal admonished/confronted him at some point in the match.

I think Rafa had two issues.
He was not happy with Sonego's grunting, and he was not happy because Sonego kept pestering the umpire to close the stadium roof.

In the highlights I saw it did seem that Sonego's grunting on the serve was sometimes extreme.
However, Rafa himself is borderline obnoxious with his own grunting, imo.

They get angry about the grunting? Is it a "foul"-able offense? You'd have thought that ship sailed in tennis years ago.

Alcaraz
Got spanked out of the tournament by J. Sinner.

Sinner is playing very well and his strokes look tight and confident.

Alcaraz has some things to work on in order challenge at Wimbledon in the future.
Right now his game is much more suited to clay and hard courts.
He has a nasty kick serve, but that is much more effective on clay (and hard courts) than on grass.
He needs to get a better slice serve going and he needs to get himself a bit more comfortable from the service line forward to the net.
His volleys are just so-so.

Sinner will be a test for NoVax.
Will be interesting.

I think Alcaraz will show very well at the U.S. Open.

He has a great attitude -- and the surface will be to his liking.

Djoker and Rafa came through.

Now it's...

Norrie v. Djokovic
Kyrgios v, Nadal

Haha, nice work poptart. We each got 2/4. I was pulling hard for Fritz to break through today but he lost to a man of superhuman abilities. I’m not sure Rafa is even going to be 80% versus Kyrgios, which may spell doom. This is the best Nick has played despite the side theatrics.

Norrie is a solid top 10-ish player and will have the home crowd behind him, but I think Djoker wins in straights. Hope I’m wrong. Sinner couldn’t finish the job.

I just don’t think Rafa is going to be able to pull this one off on the grass and nursing a pretty bad injury. But hope I’m wrong on that one too.

That's a good analysis of things right now.

I know Nadal is not right physically, but now when people are sort of expecting Nicky to break through and get to his first major final, I believe he will choke and/or play subpar.
Could even be a meltdown of some sort. :)

It's Djokovic v. Kyrgios in the final.

Kyrgios could take this to five sets and be in a position to win it if he can keep his shit straight. That’s a big time IF. Djoker has shown some lapses, especially early in his matches vs Sinner and Norrie.

NK’s got the physical game on grass to frustrate Djokovic just not sure he’s right in the head. But hoping for an exciting match. I will take Djoker, 6-2 in the fifth.

But my run on good predictions could be at its end.

I like Djokovic in 4 sets.

Kyrgios is much more rested, but I'm not sure that will help him. It might hurt him, actually.
It's been a few days now for him with no match play, and that is sort of an awkward situation.

NoVax has the best return in the game, and he figures to make Kyrgios work harder to hold his serve on this surface than other opponents have.
Then the errors can creep in to Nicky's game.

At any rate, it should be interesting.

Screwey— to hold serve in tennis means to win the games of which you are serving. Conversely, if you are broken, it means you have lost your service game (you might often see “Break Point” flash up on the tv screen, this means the server is one point away from losing his/her service game).

It is the standard, let’s say, to hold serve in tennis. It is especially common at Wimbledon, played on a fast surface like grass that makes it even more advantageous to hold serve (especially for big serving guys like Kyrgios or Isner or Opelka).

Especially in the days when there were more serve-and-volleyers (see Sampras, Becker, Edberg, McEnroe, Ivanisevic), if a player got broken at Wimbledon, he could typically kiss that set good-bye.

This is not necessarily always the case for the women’s game, where sometimes breaks of serve (ie not holding serve) happen more often. Even at Wimbledon. Most especially at Roland Garros (played on clay, a slower surface, skews the advantage a bit more toward the players who have a good return of serve).

Makes sense, thanks for explaining. You have the advantage when you are serving. Don't want to blow it.

You watch college football.

You may notice, in a game in which teams are trading field goals or when a game goes into multiple OTs and teams are trading TDs, commentator might say “Mississippi State holds serve.” Its definitely an expression.

And of course Fowler on ESPN covers both sports and I feel like I’ve heard him say this.

How did you guys get into tennis? Obviously you are both life long tennis players and fans. Myself I started last year because I had always respected the sport and thought it would be a good game to pick up during the pandemic. It's outside, exercise, fun, a good way to meet people, and last but certainly not least, it can be extremely cheap.

There are so many tennis courts in DC (and in America in general) that it's easy to pick up games for free. And the internet, email and cellular communication make it easy to find partners. I'm on a group chat here in DC where people just throw out "anyone want to play X night? I'm a (insert skill level here) and can play at (Insert location here) at X time." And that is how the magic happens.

All good points, SM.

Once you get "hooked" on the game, and start seeing improvement, it is a lot of fun!

I started when I was about 10 years old.
My dad had a ping pong table in our basement, and I had a knack for that, and then someone who was a tennis player identified that I could have some ability in tennis, so he began to give me lessons.
I picked it up quickly and I was hooked.

Djoker is playing for history.

If he wins he will move into a tie for 2nd most Wimbledon Men's Singles titles, with 7.
P. Sampras and W. Renshaw have 7.

Btw, Renshaw won his 7 back in the 1800s when the tournament structure was totally different than it is now.
In that time the defending champion had a bye all the way into the finals. lol
The rest of the players would play a tournament and whoever won would then square off in the finals against the previous year's champion.

R. Federer (8) has the most Wimbldon wins.

Djoker is also playing for history in that he still holds out hope of surpassing R. Nadal for the most majors.
He really can't afford to let this one slip away from him, and especially in light of the reality that it seems he will be *BANNED* from the U.S. Open because he refuses to take the vax.

This final should be fun!

Great match today, caught the second half. What amazes me about the guys, especially the best, is that their shot placement is just so impeccable and intentional. Kyrgios' serves were so good, he would place it feet below the service line and Jerkoff would barely even try to return it. Just amazing.

What a great tournament!

The match was about what I expected.

In some ways it was a typical NoVax performance.

He is a phenomenal counter-puncher.
Djoker keeps putting the ball back in play, and that eventually wears an opponent down, physically and mentally.

He is a bigger, stronger, and better version of Mats Wilander.

I knew Kyrgios was a bit of a head case, but c'mon, is this really his act? He loudly rants pretty much non-stop to anyone and everyone? The umpire, the opponent, the fans? That was the craziest shit ever in a final. Obviously Djoker wasn't fazed. I wanna fuck Kate. And to hell with the U.S. Open and the bullshit vax mandate. These slimy criminals in the CDC aren't giving up at all.

And he also gets physically violent (allegedly) with his women.

Facing assault allegations, he must appear in court next month.
