This from a friend (the LSU professor who went to Antarctica) whose daughter Manon is working on her PhD in physics. Manon has a job working for NASA which is mostly remote. Well, she had a job at NASA.

What a start of the year.... Trump just fired all pathway doctoral students (Manon included) because they are "remote workers" while they work from their university. They have until late February to move to DC to be in person at NASA or quit/be fired... If you are not a student working in the town where the federal agency is, how can you be on campus and in DC... just sickening... everyday is another level.

Trump tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China begin Saturday, White House says

https://www.cnbc.com/2025/01/31/trump-t ... -says.html

25% on Mexico and Canada.
10% on China.

Can one of the Trump fanboys describe how this will not be inflationary?

Thanks!

Inflation is a function of monetary supply. Basically, too much money chasing too few goods. The level of economic ignorance in this country is utterly appalling.

Excerpt from 2022
Tariff increases did not cause inflation, and their removal would undermine domestic supply chains

But it is equally true that the pre-Trump status quo in trade policy for decades was deeply damaging to working families and domestic business. Many of those who inflicted this damaging status quo on U.S. workers have tried to leverage the current inflationary episode to roll back all tariffs introduced under the Trump administration in the name of containing inflation. This is a deeply dishonest linkage. Tariffs introduced over the past five years were not large enough, and the timing of them is completely inconsistent with them being a cause—or plausible significant solution—for today’s inflation.

Further, rolling tariffs back would return efforts to reshore key elements of global manufacturing supply chains to the United States back to square one. Given how damaging fragile global supply chains have proven to be—and how important it is to reshore production back to the United States—claims that tariff rollbacks are an answer to inflation are dangerous. Below, we point out the following salient facts:

The timing of the tariffs clearly shows no correlation with inflation and eliminating tariffs could not plausibly restrain it. The bulk of the tariffs were in place before 2020, yet inflation only began accelerating in March 2021. Clearly, inflation was driven by many sources besides tariffs.
In theory, tariffs do not need to have caused inflation for their removal to help restrain it. In practice, however, the size of the tariffs introduced after 2016 are simply insufficient for their removal to make a dent in current inflation. A top-down estimate that compares tariff revenue (a good proxy for the upper bound on price effects) with personal consumption expenditures shows that removing all 2016 tariffs would lead to a one-time, 0.3-percentage-point reduction in consumer prices.
In the best-case scenario, eliminating tariffs would offset just 7.2% of the total increase in consumer prices, but provide no buffer to price increases thereafter.

Too funny.
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which runs the federal pumping system, declined to comment on why the pumps were offline for maintenance or on Trump’s comments that the military was involved. The California Department of Water Resources directed questions on the pump maintenance to the federal government.

One U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss military activities, said no active duty troops were involved in turning the water pumps back on.

The White House suggested Tuesday that Trump was referring to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers but did not provide details about how much water was involved, where it came from or how changes were implemented. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked at a briefing what role soldiers were playing in California water policy.
Why were the pumps offline?

How many are working remotely from foreign countries?

Is housing available for those who do move? (If not, where is everybody supposed to go when their day job is done?) Are they paying or relocations? Is this a violation of the employment contract agreed to?

Is this legitimate, or are they smoking someone out who needs to be smoked out and there are casualties they don't care about along the way?

They're all liars, Diego. Like all white people are racists. You decide the level you can handle and go from there.

The Democrats are also serial liars, and many of them took money from a recently convicted serial killer of black men. Are they worth your unwavering support?

Canada's Justin Trudeau announces retaliatory tariffs following Trump's executive order
The Canadian prime minister said he would implement a 25% tariff on $155 billion in U.S. goods.

The prime minister directly addressed Americans, saying that Trump’s move “will have real consequences for you, the American people.”

He also encouraged Canadians to think about ways to “do your part,” such as opting for Canadian-made products over American-made
products at stores and changing summer vacation plans to stay in Canada...
