Not too terribly far from Crater Lake. And if my memory is working correctly (doubtful), the largest fir tree in the country is right near the Caves.

I'm sure it's quite beautiful, however...

The pictures on that web site don't really don't do it justice. The Buffalo river slices thru some 1000 foot high limestone bluffs for many miles of river. Being a National river, it's all pretty much a pristine wilderness area as no private develpment is allowed adjacent to the river. Water is so crystal clear that you can look over the side of your canoe and see big ass brown trout cruising around as you quietly float past.

You'd have to experience it for yourself to truly appreciate it.

One of Luth's priorities was someplace nice, peaceful, and away from it all, and it doesn't get any more serene than this. If you're in to camping, a night spent on a gravel bar beside this river is nothing short of a dream.

Not trying to impress so much as just say that the Buffalo is a really sweet place to spend a day or two if you're looking for relaxation.

As for excitement and a pure adrenaline rush as well as breathtaking scenery, I'd recommend the Browns Canyon or Royal Gorge trip on the Arkansas river in Colorado.

Been there, done that, twice, and have the pictures to prove it.

Word of advice: When your guide asks if you want to jump out the raft to experience the river up close and personal like, say "no thanks dude, I'm good".

Damn near drowned my city slicker ass in some ice cold water, I did.

About a 1/2 mile later as I shot down the river gasping for air as every rapid smashed into my shell-shocked face, the raft caught up and I dragged my dumb-ass back in.

Nope, I don't recommend that at all.

I was on the southern border of MT and it was too far of a drive for a weekend, it being on the Canadian border and all. I seriously doubt its as busy there as Yellowstone was, but then again I don't know how many come from north of the border...I can ask my buddy that lives in Billings if you have any MT questions. Although, I think it costs more to live in Napa than it does to live in Manhatten. Not a cheap place. But, you're not too terribly far from the 5th largest metro area in the country, but far enough away to not have to deal with the horrid traffic, and all of the other "big city" problems.

Very cool place...especially if you like to get your booze on with fine wine. But...you're from the Midwest -- I'd recommend the white zinfandel. I hear Ernest and Julio Iglesias make one that's right up your alley.

Actually, if you take the Atherton Avenue\San Marin Drive. exit and go about 6 miles... you can take a turn near Sears Point instead of heading towards Vallejo.

What cracks me up in rural Nevada(sup 99.99% of the state) is that they have those solar-powered radar "tell-you-your-speed" sign thingies along the side of the hughway...50 miles from the nearest town, roadsign, trailer, artificial light, etc. Drove through there last year at night, and thought they were a wonderful way to check the accuracy of the speedometer when you crack triple digits. Was driving a 4-banger Mercedes, and the best one I logged was 105...held that speed all night. And it still took all freaking night to get from Vegas to Reno...after running out of gas outside of Fallon. Good times. RACK that old methed-out biker dude for hooking a brother up.
