I've watched the clip a few times.

The league would no doubt put their spin on it, backing up the officials, but there was some 'funny' time-keeping going on on that last Giant drive.

The 6 second ADD -- wft for?
Where the hell did that come from.
Hell, if a correction was to be made it should have been a correction to take time OFF the clock. LOL

But MUCH more egregious than the 6 second add was Mike Carey stopping the clock on the 4th down conversion by NY.
Perhaps (I'm not sure) the official can stop the clock if he thinks that the chains might need to be brought out.
HOWEVER, even giving Carey the benefit of the doubt on that, it is CLEAR that the clock should have again STARTED .... waaaaay .... before it actually did.

NY doesn't make it down the field to get the game-winning score if time was kept correctly, IMO.


Perhaps folks are 'lazy' and don't want to think this one through.
Just content that NY was better ... they won, it's over, forget it.

But I've got a DEEP distrust of NFL officiating, so a situation like this is quite fascinating to me.

Looked to me like the 6 second add was to put the clock back to where it SHOULD Have been stopped when the refs first called for the measurement.

But hey, somebody's got to use all that tinfoil out there for something.

Sounds to me like if pop's right, New England should have got the ball back with about five seconds left. Enough time for maybe one play, and not enough time Belicheat to leave early.

Carey never did call for a measurement.
He looked over at the chains, that's all.
But the clock was stopped the whole time until the Giants again snapped the ball.

Hey, you could hear Aikman and Buck both sounding perplexed/shocked when they realized that the clock had been stopped the whole time.

From the point at which Carey SIGNALED FIRST DOWN until the ball was snapped was roughly 18 seconds (I counted).
Plus 6 'mystery' seconds added ...... and you've got an extra 24 seconds given to NY.

And this is giving Carey the benefit of the doubt that it is within the rules to even stop the clock AT ALL in a situation where he thinks that maybe the chains might need to be brought out.

Note that Aikman spoke in DEFINITE terms of the clock NOT being stopped at allin that case.


At any rate, NY was given an extra 24 seconds (at the very least), PLUS more even seconds later on the Eli scramble play.
