If so, you don't live in Houston.

It's like the Sacramento folks saying they live in San Francisco when they travel and are asked where they're from.

Highway 6 is well over 100 miles from the Gulf and the Hurricane should be just a rain storm by then.

http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Galve ... ocode=CITY

Uhh, check a map smart guy. Hwy 6 is no more than two miles from the Gulf of Mexico. As I already stated I live on the Southwest side of the Houston metro area. When I travel I don't tell people I live in Houston. I tell them I live in Sugar Land. When they ask where that is I tell them Houston is a suburb of Sugar Land.

So no, Ike will not just be a rain strom as it crosses here. Top wind gusts so far here was 49 mph. Small amounts of rain so far, but wind is gusting and then nothing, then gusting again.

Baytown isn't in Houston.
And the real storm surge hasn't even hit yet.

and you still live in the midwest.

Do you think "Baytown" will end up in Houston when the "storm surge" hits ?

Galveston has two fires buring on streets that are filled with water. Who knows if rescue can put them out before they spread.

Ummm....how about just letting the water put it out when it submerges those homes instead of wasting manpower?

Seems like the sensible thing to get wasted in the face of a major disaster.

Fu, watching the radar and the news feeds, it really looks like you're gonna pretty much dodge this bullet.

Not saying you might not have some damage, but the bulk of the trouble is going to be in east of I-45, it seems.

I'm still hopin' to see this thing tilt even a little bit more east.

Yeah, looks like Cypress will be in the NW quadrant of the storm which is the second weakest quadrant. Fine by me.

I'm still really concerned because I saw what Hurricane Fran (nowhere near the size or wind speed of Ike) did to parts of the Raleigh area in 1996 and that was almost 150 miles from where it made landfall. I also saw what Katrina did to areas 80-100 miles north of New Orleans.

Very true, Fu.

You're not totally out of the woods by any means, but it could look worse.

For certain, some HEAVY winds are headed your way -- and they'll be sustained.

I know what you mean. We lost power for 12 hours when Rita went through three years ago and this is already worse.

I can guaranfuckingtee that we will both be without power for an extended period of time soon enough. Just set my AC to 60 degrees to make my house an icebox before the power goes out. :?

So... 50MPH gusts and heavy rains cause this level of "disaster"?

Nice choice of locale, dumbasses.

Darwin, indeed.

Again -- we call that "winter."

And if you people had any real trees, you'd be fairly fucked.

This may be radical stuff, but here's how we roll, U&L Style -- Don't build a house where storm surges can hit (which were 75 feet and up last winter). Don't have large trees on the windward side of the house (south and west are good sides to keep clear around here). If you're by a stream ("raging bayou," for inbreds), get your foundation well above grade.

Serious rocket surgery, people.

I guess when you deal with it at least once a year, it becomes a little more elementary than for those who see it every few decades. And I doubt FEMA (or any other fed agency that's in gross violation of the Constitution) would keep ponying up over and over and over if we didn't remedy some past oversights (although Tillamook County is trying FEMA's patience once again -- they already bought out many lots over the last decade or so, most likely from transplanted Gulf Coast dumbasses).
