Up 9-0 in a game and trash talking like a mother fucker. In the real sport of baseball the next two batters would be struck by a pitch followed by a bench clearing brawl, which would make schimk proud.

Are you questioning the use of colloquialisms?

The rules make no mention of intentionally misspelled colloquialisms being cause for elimination.

Maybe we need a clarification, then?

Deciders? Care to make a ruling on that one?

Colloquialisms are fine. It's omitting the subject that is technically grammatically incorrect.

Dio, the subject was understood, especially since it was identified by the exact same word, "that," in the preceding sentence.

Anyway, what did you mean when you wrote, "Is that four?"

"Four," what?

The four (so far) would be...

1) "Sheer volume of words and posts dictates that I'll be one of the first people here to go Kramer..."

2) Uniquely misinterpreting 'unique'.

3) Misplaced comma.

4) "Gotta always remind myself to stay on top of that..."

As far as the last one, being understood and being grammatically correct are not synonymous.

Diogenes wrote:The four (so far) would be...

Nope. Not a problem there.
2) Uniquely misinterpreting 'unique'.
Whether you agree or disagree with my contention there, what I wrote was not erroneous in terms of the actual text. So, no, in no way could you even try to list that statement as a violation.

Strike it from the record.
3) Misplaced comma.
Nope. You're wrong. The comma was fine.

Jesus, you're reaching. As much as I've written here, this is all you have? A single comma, which isn't even worth mentioning, as it's not an obviously misplaced or missing comma; this is your big play?
4) "Gotta always remind myself to stay on top of that..."

As far as the last one, being understood and being grammatically correct are not synonymous.
If it's a violation at all, which is debatable at best, since the context explains it and no editor worth his salt would raise a stink over it, it's still not a violation of the type that would run afoul of what's intended with this contest. They're not looking for esoteric debate. They're looking for obvious blunders.

If it's debatable, it's probably not sufficient cause for elimination.

Keep trying. Sometime soon I'll miss something.

I was really hoping to see m2 step up to the plate. Just imagine if "that" guy was compelled to "use" proper "punctuation."

(For the vultures out there, that was parody, not error. Come visit BTPCF, where you'll witness Mgo's brilliant homage to m2's bizarre excursions into the realm of random grammar.)

Yeah. C&P the post and go ahead and use the red color font to highlight the error(s), and then add some funny variation of "Eliminated!!" in your text.

Check Mgo's post, at the top of this page. That's the best example yet of how this ought to work.

Now, as to whether Dave is actually logging and keeping track of who's been eliminated, that's anybody's guess.

Dinsdale wrote:Just from Page 1:

That's a very cool point. Excellent point.

I wonder, though, how hard and fast is that rule really applied? In theory, there should be a space both before and after the ellipsis...

"John is such a fag ... and so is Steve."

In practice, I can't recall ever seeing it done that way, especially when the ellipsis is used to end the thought, as I did, above.

Thinking about my own writings, I know I never leave a space before or after an ellipsis. I simply can't recall ever seeing anybody else doing it, either.

"John is so gay ..."

vs

"John is so gay..."

I'm sure the latter example is the way I usually see people use it, as a means of ending a sentence.

"John is so ... gay!"

vs

"John is so...gay!"

Same thing. I'm sure the latter is the way it's always used.

Maybe I just miss it, because my eyes are trained to ignore it? Or, more likely, maybe practically everybody is doing it wrong?

It's an excellent academic point.

Deciders? Do you require a space be used either before or after an ellipsis?

(Dins, reading up on this further, I'm apparently doing one other thing "wrong" when I use the ellipsis. Apparently, an additional period must still be added to end a sentence, even following an ellipsis. This is in addition to the rule which states that a space must be included before and after an ellipsis.

So, by that reasoning, the correct way to write a sentence which ends in an ellipsis would end up looking like ... .

That can't be right. I know I've never seen anything like that.

Maybe they mean ... this ....

vs what we usually see...<<<

...which would be...<<<
^^^

...like this.
^^^

Also, what about quotes?

"John told me, 'Dude ... seriously ... shut the fuck up ... . '"

...or even...

"Dude, my god .... " with four periods in a row, and then a space before the quotation mark.

No way. Leaving a space after an ellipsis, inside a quote, that just looks retarded. Even adding the extra period looks a bit off.

This is freaking me out. Now I'm going to really be paying attention to see if I can ever find any examples of any of these things.)
