You stick a coat on and warm up. When you're in 100 degrees and high humidity - it's pretty easy to die. It was far less stress on the body playing in the snow, fyi.

UofM went to BC, to Colorado, to Hawaii and to Syracuse. Auburn went to Virginia. And the 10 years preceding that, UofM went to Boston College, UCLA, Hawaii and South Carolina. Auburn went to Texas and North Carolina.

I've played and officiated in both weather extremes.....high heat index and extremely low wind chill.....and I prefer the heat to the cold. Two a day practices in high heat and humidity were tortuous, so game nights, regardless of the heat, was easy. Playing/officiating in sub freezing temps with 30 mph cold winds out of the north are much more uncomfortable....at least for me.

I'd agree with Willie on that. This summer has been terrible with the heat index. I have gone to a few of our games where the wind chill was about zero and I didn't mind it at all.

The thing with hot vs cold weather is, we're not just talking about personal preference here. We're talking about playing an actual, physical sport in the respective conditions. Cold weather affects the body and the game in ways the heat simply doesn't. There is a reason why you'll often see 10-6 type games in cold weather, that might normally be scored in the 60s. Guys can't run. Can't throw. Hits are much more difficult to absorb. The weather doesn't just affect your body, it affects the way the game is actually played. Game planning, play calling, etc., becomes altered.

Heat? Sure, some guys are cramping, they're sucking down water like crazy, and spending every possible moment huddled around the Cool Zone, but they're not slinging the ball around the yard any less. They're still doing everything on the field just as they practice.

That might be relevant if we were talking about cross country. We're talking about playing football.

Just a question...the cold affects the ball...obviously making it harder, etc...again just observations...I have been to games in both types of weather and I would much rather be in a Heat environment to watch a game than say 35 degrees and a cold sleet mixture (PSU's first game at OSU in the Shoe in 1993)...

Neither extreme is good for players but, for fans (at least this one), I'd much prefer sitting in the stadium in a t-shirt and shorts than being bundled up in 5 layers of clothing, freezing my ass off, and, due to everyone wearing so much cold weather gear, feeling like a sardine trying to squeeze into the limited bleacher space.

As a player/official/coach, I was always more concerned with pulling a hamstring/muscles in cold weather, and only had to deal with cramps in the heat (something that could usually be avoided by drinking plenty of water/pickle juice/gatorade, and eating a few bananas. I've umpired high school and college baseball games where we've called the game because the snowflakes were so big that it made it dangerous for the hitters and fielders trying to see the ball, and in such extreme heat on artificial turf that it felt like the soles of your shoes were melting into the turf. Players don't usually die from playing/practicing in the cold, but there have been far too many cases where they die from the heat. That said, I'd prefer playing in hot weather (80-85 degrees, but not extreme heat) than in the extreme cold.
