A number of watersheds exist in Marin County including Walker Creek, Lagunitas Creek, Miller Creek, and Novato Creek. Notably, the Lagunitas Creek Watershed is home to the largest-remaining wild run of Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) in Central California. These coho are part of the "Central California Coast Evolutionarily Significant Unit," or CCC ESU, and are listed as "endangered" at both the state and federal level.
Significant efforts to protect and restore these fish have been underway in the Watershed since the 1980s. Fifty-percent of historical salmon habitat is now behind dams. Strong efforts are also being made to protect and restore undammed, headwater reaches of this Watershed in the San Geronimo Valley, where upwards of 40% of the Lagunitas salmon spawn each year and where as much as 1/3 of the juvenile salmon (or fry) spend their entire freshwater lives. The "Salmon Protection and Watershed Network"[14] leads winter tours for the public to learn about and view these spawning salmon, and also leads year-round opportunities for the public to get involved in stream restoration, monitoring spawning and smolt outmigration, juvenile fish rescue and relocation in the summer, and advocacy and policy development. Around 490 different species of birds have been observed in Marin County.[15]
Despite the lack of rain in the Marin County area due to historic drought levels, in 2014, an estimated 20,000 juvenile Coho salmon made the migration from their spawning grounds in the Lagunitas Creek area to the Pacific ocean. This increase in migration was significantly up from the previous historic record for the same migration measured in 2006 at 11,000.[16]

Excuse me? The following list says Nebraska can grow ample numbers of and significant quantities of if needed. The growing season (varies for type of produce) extends from mid-March to mid-October depending on the year. April through September is guaranteed. Speaking of water.... the Ogllala Aquifer (978 trillion gallons of fresh water) contains a decent percentage of ALL the fresh water on the planet. If vegetable production in Cali goes tits up, I predict a number of those corn, beans, and wheat farmers would make switch cash crops if they started making 70k per acre in profits due to the demand that would result.
Want to hook us up with a link there ??..if the farmer made 70K an acre in PROFITS then your produce is costing you about 210,000 dollars a ton retail processed or $ 105 a pound, give or take on yields and grade out / processing efficiency. Americans will never pay that for produce.

Apples are a cold weather fruit. It is one of the few fruits that won't grow worth a fukk in the central valley. I suspect mikey was talking more about the tropical/subtrpical stuff that they grow a few metric shit tons of.

Uhm, the leading region for apple production in the US (by a ways) is Eastern Washington, where during the growing season, it's hot as fuck. Not entirely dissimilar in climate to the Central Valley (cools off a little more at night).
And the Central Valley cranks out its fair share of apples.

wasn't aware they grew any apples in the valley. Maybe at the northern end. I know they don't grow much in the SEC. I did know that washington grew a bunch, but, figured it was in the western parts that are cooler. we grow a good deal here and upstate new york grows a lot just south of the great lakes which have somewhat of a cooling affect on the area.

So, I guess I should have said, apples worth eating are grown in cooler climates.
I am a big fan of macintosh, macouns and a few others. Don't care for the sweeter stuff like red delicious, etc. I believe they grow mostly that inferior sweet stuff out west. Really wish someplace outside the U&R would grow macs which would be ready this time of year. We are coming up on the time where the macs reach the end of their cold storage shelf life, which more or less means I give up on apple eating until next fall other than granny smiths which seem to be available all year. For some reason the southern hemisphere growers don't do macs.

Fujis are awesome. At least the good ones that I get at the local farmers market. Crisp, juicy and just the right amount of tart. Macintosh tends to be too mushy a lot of the time.

We will be eating the last of last falls Goldens and Johnagolds this week. I store them in a frig all winter, will have some cinnamon apples tonight. Probably make a pie as well tomorrow. Good apples are all about having the correct amounts of days and nights below freezing. That combination with the well draining soils in Western Washington and Hood River Valley, plus a higher elevation grow way better apples than areas west of the Cascades and the mutated versions from that quality ground water in the Central Valley.
