Lots of money to tie up on a defenseman on the downside of his career.

JD's all over it....just came down. I've got the Dallas sports station on as I type. Armstrong is holding press conference at 4 p.m. cdt. Looks like both sides have turned female.....feelings have gotten into the mix. Modano's upset that it took the Stars so long to make offer. Hicks thought he had an agreement with him after they spoke last night. Thought it might be Mo jerking with Stars by taking so long but now? Can't see Stars upping offer. Still, why would he want to play in Boston? Chicago? Lousy weather, women (compared to Dallas)...two staples in Mo's life.

He was top 3 dman, he carried the goaless blues. His game is perfect for new game, noone outlet passes like pronger, he can go blueline to blueline in a flick of wrist.

I'm agreeing with adel. There was a window where I got to see him after his return from injury. At first he didn't have his wrist but had his legs, but he later came back with both to really carry the team.

His wife is a 314 socialite by birth so she may be a little put off by going to Edmonton.

Apparently Peca has been traded to the Oilers for Mike York. Good trade for Edmonton, but someone should tell Lowe that he can acquire players without giving up assets off your roster!!

I wonder who Milbury is making cap space for?

And regarding Pronger, I gotta go with the Blues guys on this one. He's one of the very best at his position.... still.

Sucks to see Dandenault leave but he'll get a chance to be a full-time player in his hometown. Reports are that the Wings are talking with Chelios again...it might be only a 1 year deal for $1 million, he'll be the 5th or 6th defenseman.

Another active day...the Pens adding Gonchar gives them the makings of a lethal power play. Oilers pick up Peca...I'm curious to see what he's got left. They're definitely flexing their new found muscle in the open market with adding Pronger and Peca the last two days. Boston makes another brilliant move in adding Leetch...a better all-around defenseman than Gonchar. A couple of decent additions by the Islanders by signing Satan and acquiring Sopel from Vancouver. The Canucks keep their captain but they've lost two of their top 6 defenseman...the rumors are that they are hot on the trails of Niedermayer though. Modano turns down a deal from Dallas...Chicago and Boston are in the hunt for his services. Sounds like Khabibulin to Chicago could be a reality very soon. The Rangers have an interest in Forsberg...they tried to steal Sakic from the Avs a few years back.

Peter Forsberg is going back where he started. TSN has learned that the Philadelphia Flyers have signed Forsberg to a two-year deal worth $10.7 million.

Forsberg will get $5.7 million in the first year of the deal and $5.0 in the second year.

''Peter Forsberg is one of the best players in the game,'' said GM Bob Clarke in making the announcement. ''We signed him knowing that he puts us over the cap and we will have to trade some guys now.''

The aquisition of Forsberg puts the Flyers over the NHL's salary cap, but Clarke expects to make a trade within the next two days to get back under the league's financial limit.

The race to land free agent defenceman Scott Niedermayer is down to three teams, TSN has learned. According to NHL sources, the teams are New Jersey, San Jose and Anaheim.

New Jersey has been Niedermayer's NHL home since 1992, after the Devils took him with the 3rd overall pick in the 1991 draft. Niedermayer has spent 12 full seasons with the Devils, winning the three Stanley Cups and the 2004 Norris trophy as the NHL's top defenceman.

San Jose would offer Niedermayer a chance to be closer to his home in the B.C. interior, and also an excellent chance to compete for the Stanley Cup. The Sharks are a young team widely regarded as having one of the best groups of young players in the NHL. The Sharks were beaten in the Western Conference final by the Calgary Flames in the 2004 Stanley Cup playoffs.

Anaheim would be Niedermayer's pick for family reasons, as playing there would reunite him with his brother Rob, who has been with the Ducks for the past two NHL seasons. The Niedermayer brothers played together in the 2004 World Hockey Championship, but have never played on the same NHL team. The two faced each other in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final, with Scott's Devils winning in game seven.

In addition to his three Stanley Cup titles, Scott Niedermayer has won an Olympic Gold medal, a World Championship, the World Cup, the Memorial Cup and a World Junior title. He is the only player in hockey history to have won all six titles.

Most of the teams with lots of cap room have already blown their budgets, or are too close to the max. I suspect that, other than Niedemayer, you'll see a big drop in what players sign for now.

It's going to funny to see what Philly gets for Roenick.

Now that they are over the cap and HAVE to move him, some team will get him for nothing. I'm thinking they might get a 'conditional pick' at best for him. I suspect the Flyers will be forced to buy him out.

The deal for four years at $6.725 million per season, while brother and new teammate Rob signed a four year contract at $2 million per season.

Dallas hockey fans breathing collective sigh of relief. Modano accepted less to stay with Stars and finish his career there. Would've been like Yzerman retiring as a Sabre or something. And when the cost of living in Boston/Chicago was weighed against Texas, it came out about even. He was just on the radio and stated, just like I predicted, that the prospect of chasing tail that was all bundled up in parkas for most of the year didn't appeal to him. Now he can concentrating on bagging the other half of Dallas' hotties.....and maybe get a little hockey in.
