click on the picture, then select 'Northern Exposure'.

CBC Radio Site

About sixteen pictures, wonderfully shot and taken from the longer film axis to grind. It was created to show how
North America's misrepresentation of North Korea stands as an obstacle to peace and reunification for the Korean peninsula.
Great stuff!

You won't be seeing pictures of anybody starving, Choads. Besides, as the Government ordered a halt to aid shipments weeks ago proves that the crises has been overcome!

And remember, the problem stems from American lead KEDO sanctions. The whole situation only reinforces my support for the country a thousand-fold, while strengthening all the negative convictions I hold about the U.S., a nation which attempts to starve weaker nations into submission and uses food as a political weapon.

The more malnourished Korean children there are, the more forcible is my support for the Republic and Communism and the more firmly convinced I am of the moral depravity of the U.S. That being said, the widespreadedness of the stunted growth and malnourishment is ridiculously overstated by Western journalists who often do not even have access to reliable information on such things. If that 'Diet Of Acorns And Grass' story posted on this board by Mvscal were true, the entire population would have been dead a month ago.

Guide yourself by discredited rumours and sensationalist journalism all you want, you only succeed in ensuring your continued ignorance. That is your loss, not mine.

By the way, if the DPRK were not threatened and suffocated by the US, and allowed to grow into a united nation, the DPRK's achievements would be magnificent. But in view of the terrible situation of affairs the DPRK finds itself in, the country has done admirably in keeping the standard of living at an acceptable level.

Any capitalist state would have imploded under the same conditions!

Guides are essential. Any self-respecting country should maintain a high level of security. The US are always trying to get their personell in, and even admit that they have a few spies already in the country. The DPRK rightly maintains a high level of security and should elevate it as much as humanly possible and take every other precaution to obstruct, offset or prevent a terrorist attack and terrorist invasion by the US. This is the key to their prolonged existence.
Is there any problem in this world that isn't the creation of the United States Phibes? If the problem is with the U.S. and the Communist system is so sucessful, the "pressure" the United States applies wouldn't mean squat, North Korean society should be in the middle of some sort of second enlightenment according to you. Nice try.
It's a matter of problematic degree. Moreso with Capitalism full strength, less with Capitalism lite or Capitalism complete with pot and brothels.
Then we can expect you to move there or Cuba when? Hell, why not take me with you to this mordern day Garden of Eden? I mean Communists are all about "spreading the joy" aren't they? Don't keep the rest of us from Nirvanna bro, that ain't cool.
Because I live where I live with people I know and I have my job to attend to. I would rather see Socialism here.

I'm spreading rumors and senationalist journalism? You may want to get that "Kim Jong Il Scrotum Parking" tatoo lasered off the area just south of your lower lip. After that fly on over to Pyonyang and organize a protest against the government, and let us know what happens to you.
Why? They're doing a bang up job. Up the (people) Government.
What makes you think the South wants to join the North? Communism hasn't/isn't working everywhere its been tried.
I can provide you with more information than you'd know what to do with. And economic revisionism brought down the Soviet Union. I can also provide you with this information if you are truly interested..
how many people do you see traveling via floating tubes to get to Cuba from the United States?
I went though this with ChargerMike and don't have the energy to do it again.

In - I explained to Choads.

Out - Brain drain can be a problem. You cannot have essential services like Doctors, etc, taking education at the peoples expense and then bugger off to some place for cash. Skilled trades are essential to any country existing under seige.

Phibes, if the communist model and the DPRK are something we all should aspire to, then why do they need food shipments in the first place? Were a capitalist country to be faced with sanctions, they'd suffer economically, but they'd still be able to feed their own people. I won't even use the US as an example. Think of France or Germany. They wouldn't have millions starving and in need of shelter.

That exact scenario happened in Germany at the end of WWI. The country was in ruin for 15 years thanks to the Allied embargo. Hitler then created the illusion of prosperity by robbing the German Jews of everything they owned and killing 95% of them. That lasted until mid WWII when the allies again cut off Germany and bombed it back into the stone age. Only the Marshall Plan (the most foresighted bit of foriegn policy this country has ever seen) saved West Germany from another 15 years of utter ruin.

No country can survive in the modern world without being a member of the greater world economy. That includes North Korea.

No capitalist country whose economy is dependent upon selling foreign goods to others can survive. DPRK doesn't fall into that category.

You can't possibly think that the Northern half of the Korean Peninsula has everything a modern nation state needs to survive? This isn't Pol Pot we're talking about here. Kim Jong Il likes his modern conveniences.

Variable wrote:Phibes, if the communist model and the DPRK are something we all should aspire to, then why do they need food shipments in the first place?
Because the DPRK entered into an agreement with Clinton to shut down their existing reactors (in good faith) and exchange them for the light water reactor project. Then Clinton pulled the rug out from under them after the energy project was frozen.

Looking back, the best thing the DPRK might have done was blast Clintons envoy out of the sky the minute he entered Korean airspace and then gave it the old 'oops! so solly!'

Then between 94 and 97 massive flooding destroyed most of the arable land there is (including crops) and you've got silt and sand covering what remains of the farmland. You've also got five million people homeless and a seasonal drought to top it off. Not to mention a twenty six foot tidal wave wiping out the rice crop in 97.

Compound this with he collapse of the Soviet Union which made up 70% of all external trade the DPRK engaged in and you have a disaster of biblical proportions.

This is all old news, you have but to look for it - but then it's not as inane as news reports along the lines of 'OMG teh communism killed teh billions of people!'

So, givin that enough time has passed and you can objectively reflect, you don't think the Marshall Plan was a form of economic Imperialism? You aren't aware of the fact that infrastucture work was under control by the time American cash even got there, thanks to a healthy public sector? Since when did Hitler attempt or desire a self sustaining economy? What does that have to do with anything?

And what are you basing your Kim Jong Il's lifestyle cracks upon? Smarten up B smack, I expect a little more from you. American 'left'

When did Hitler desire a self sustaining economy? How about when he attempted to conquer it?

As for the German "infrastructure", it was non existeint after WWII. If you doubt the effectiveness of the Mashall Plan, just tell me if you can find a better standard of living in the European countries that refused Marshall Plan aid.

I won't be holding my breath.

A little sensitive about "Dear Leader's" appetites? OK, to be fair, Kim Jong Il is definitely not a "savy fashionista". But he is not living in a hut in the middle of the jungle. And he certainly is not attempting to transform North Korea into an agrarian utopia.

But it's "unjust" and "immoral" to do the same thing in Iraq, right?

Pathetic hypocrite.
You put words in my mouth and call me a hypocrite?
