Software patents

Do you think they are a good idea?

I personally think its BS. Why? Because that would be like Mcdonalds going out and patenting the idea of a fast food burger place. KFC would patent Fast food fried chicken. Etc.

Companies are patenting ideas instead of implementation. If you read some of these patents, it sounds pathetic. It almost reads like if Mcdonalds went out and wrote a patent for 'selling food that is made up of some buns, a meat patty, some vegetables and sauces'.

Here is a great one for example:
The United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted software maker McAfee a patent for tracking network events on a computer using a firewall.

How broad can you be? Gee I think I'll go out and patent something that says "some software that does something on some electronic device". Finally I'll be rich.
