Priest Holmes done for the year?

This just in my email box from my football newsgroup.

** We're hearing unconfirmed rumors that Chiefs RB Priest Holmes (head)
is done for the season and possibly his career. Holmes was in
California undergoing neurological tests on Thursday and Friday. He returned to the team on Saturday as they went through their walkthrough. Holmes did not dress out, and of course, he didn't play Sunday vs. Oakland.

** No legitimate major news outlet has confirmed Holmes' status for
week #10, though The Kansas City Star's Jason Whitlock did report that
Holmes' injury is more serious than what's been revealed. HC Dick Vermeil has until Wednesday to submit his first injury list. That said, Holmes is likely out for week #10 pursuant to the nature of his recent medical tests. Now might be a good time to trade him before the dam breaks.

Nah, an outfit called Draft Sharks. They've got some solid sources and when they call a guy down for the year, they usualy are spot on. Obviously, there won't be any confirmation until later this week.

The buzz out of Kansas City continues to be more negative about running back Priest Holmes. This started on our message boards last week and as I've run it down, I'm hearing it from several different sources. It's important to note, that none of these sources are "official". But what I'm hearing is that Holmes won't play in Week 10 and that he might not play again this season.

Again, that that for what it's worth. I don't know this for a fact and I'm hesitant to even pass it along because of that. But it's also something I'm hearing from enough different sources that I believe it has merit. It is worth noting that the team has remained very tight lipped on this. Coach Dick Vermeil, in particular, is downplaying Holmes' trip to the spine specialist doctor.

Says nothing of the long-term prospects, but doesn't look good for the rest of this year.

They're getting their report from RotoWorld.com, the only one reporting this at this time.

Regardless, if Priest is done, it just means more LJ. At least Raiderfan doesn't have to worry about seeing him again this year.

Priest Holmes' Career May Be Over

November 9, 2005

Insiders at Arrowhead Stadium tell NBC Action News Sports Director Jack Harry that Priest Holmes, very possibly, has played his final game in a Chiefs uniform. One highly placed source tells Harry, Holmes could announce his retirement as soon as Thursday.

The 32 year old running back arrived back in town Tuesday night from Miami after undergoing some extensive testing on his spine. Doctors reportedly found a lump and should Holmes take a severe hit, he could become paralyzed. At his weekly press conference Tuesday, head coach Dick Vermeil indicated he didn't really know what was going on with Holmes.

Holmes has already undergone three knee-surgeries. He has failed to finish two of the last 3 seasons. He suffered the head injury in the San Diego game, and has now learned of this latest problem with his spine.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A spokesman for the Kansas City Chiefs denied a report Wednesday that running back Priest Holmes may retire because of a spinal injury.

"We won't have anything until later today," said Bob Moore, the director of public relations. "I don't think it's career-ending."

Holmes, 32, a three-time Pro Bowler whose 66 touchdowns between 2002-2004 are an NFL record for any three-year span, was injured on a helmet-to-helmet hit against San Diego on Oct. 30.

He missed last week's game against Oakland and in the past two weeks has seen spinal-injury specialists in California and Florida. Speculation has been rampant that he would be out for an extended period, although the Chiefs have said they were hopeful he would soon return to the lineup.

KSHB reported Wednesday that doctors had found a lump on Holmes' spine and were concerned about possible paralysis should he take a direct hit. Citing a highly-placed source it didn't identify, the station said Holmes could announce his retirement as soon as Thursday.

Holmes' agent, Todd France, was traveling Wednesday and not immediately available. An employee of France's agency, who asked not to be named, disputed the report and said suggestions that Holmes was about to retire were inaccurate.

But no one was discounting the possibility Wednesday that the Chiefs' career rushing leader could be out an extended period, perhaps the rest of the year.

Injuries have caused Holmes to cut short two of his last three seasons. But he has shown flashes of his old self while rushing for 451 yards and six touchdowns on 119 carries. He also has 21 catches for 197 yards, including a 60-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown in a victory over Washington on Oct. 16.

If he is out for a long period, the Chiefs would turn to Holmes' backup, Larry Johnson, who has averaged 5.2 yards per carry, with 506 yards on 97 attempts. Johnson had two touchdowns in the 27-23 victory Sunday over Oakland, including a 1-yard vault on the final play of the game. He has frequently complained that he was not being given enough carries.

Our View
If this diagnosis is indeed true, it would not surprise us at all to hear that Holmes is hanging them up. He admitted publicly to considering retirement around the same time Ricky Williams walked out of the Dolphins locker room. If Holmes indeed calls it a career, Larry Johnson immediately becomes a top-five fantasy running back.

Sounds like he's on the shelf for the rest of the year. But when you start hearing things like "it may take a month or so to figure out what is wrong" you have to figure that this is some scary serious shit that Holmes is looking at.

Priest is a tier 2 running back at this point-nothing more. So chefcunts, hows it feel losing preist, vermiel, and saunders (Who will be in st. louis) in the same year and having johnson (Who hasnt proven he can last a whole season and carry a team) and Mike fucking Martz running your teams show?

Mark my words, ALL this will be happening at the conclusion of this season-at which point, the chef bandwagon will be a couple thousand pounds lighter (Sup Paul and CoronaryHawk?) when the losing begins.
