I know Texas, Duke, UNC, and OSU have tremendous classes coming in as well.
ftfy

UNC and Ohio State have two of the best classes in the history of college basketball. Ohio State's "Thad Five" has a lot of people in Columbus very excited about things to come:

Greg Oden: C.... 7' 0".... 240 lbs. Best amateur prospect in the world. Nuff said.

Mike Conley: PG....6' 1.... 160 lbs. Oden's long-time friend and teammate. Arguably best point guard prospect in the country. The numbers don't overwhelm you, but I've read enough articles and seen enough video on this guy to understand everything he brings to the table. He's the quintessential point guard.

Dequean Cook: SG, SF.... 6'5"...190 lbs.... Absolute stud. Averaged 24 per as a junior, but the general consensus is that he scores whenever he wants. I am more excited about this guy than anyone else in the class, including Oden.

David Lighty: SF, SG... 6'5".... 180 lbs.... another 5-star monster. Tore his ACL as a junior but he's back to 100% and ready to have a monster senior season.

Othello Hunter: PF... 6'9".... 215 lbs.... the steal of the class. This guy's only been playing ball for a few years - but his CC coach can't say enough about him. A great way to round out the class.

All five of these guys are expected to sign tomorrow.

Josh Chichester: PF... 6'7".... 200 lbs.... Football recruit (WR/TE) who is a bit raw on the hardwood, but will be a very nice addition to the basketball class as well. Will sign a Football LOI in February.

I knew he visited here and was impressed, but I didn't know he had signed with OU. We were a long shot in getting him anyways.

Man BtH everywhere you go you leave out Thompson who was a much bigger signing at the post for us. Abi is a famous name with a legacy to be sure but Thompson is the cream of this crop.

Thad Five Makes It Official

By Kyle Lamb

Date: Nov 9, 2005

Not too long ago, the thought of signing the recruiting class Ohio State has signed today would have seemed like a pipe dream. However, that dream has become a reality as the Buckeyes made it official by receiving letters of intent from each member of their blue-chip recruiting class. Read on for more, and keep posted to Bucknuts throughout the day for more updates. (Updated at 4 pm with quotes from David Lighty)

It was a name that got its beginning on a message board. A coy poster used a play-on-words of the old ‘Fab five’, and dreamt that Ohio State’s recruiting class would grow into ‘Thad’s five’.

Well today, the Thad five is a reality.

It is Wednesday, November 9, 2005. It’s the first day of the NCAA November signing period. It means that verbally committed senior basketball prospects can sign a national letter of intent – a binding agreement between the prospect and an institution, making their intentions to attend the university of their choice official.

Dayton Dunbar guard Daequan Cook, a 6-5 senior that averaged 22.6 points a game last season, started things off at 11:45 this morning with a press conference. He signed his letter of intent and faxed it over shortly thereafter. The hard copy, signed by both he and his parents will be sent via Fed Ex to Ohio State.

However, the faxed copy is all Ohio State needs to celebrate.

One of his coaches at Dunbar, assistant Al Powell, is also his mentor and the guy that has handled his recruitment for a couple of years. They were breathing a sigh of relief.

“You know, he’s now a Buckeye,” Powell said around noon, “or at least, on paper he’s a Buckeye.”

Cook commented on why he chose the Buckeyes.

"It's close to home," Cook said while being joined by family members. "I mean this is my family, and I owe them as much as anybody else that respect and the chance to come see me play. They raised me. I mean, this is my home."

Powell said that Cook's success has meant a lot to the community.

"We're proud as a community," Powell said. "He gives kids a lot of hope that it can be done, and he does it through hard work and not hype."

On paper, Mike Conley and Greg Oden, the 6-1, guard and 7-0, center from Indianapolis Lawrence North are also Buckeyes, much to the relief of everyone in Columbus. The Spiece Indy Heat duo, AAU teammates of Cook, had considered putting off their signatures until the April signing period to see what would happen with the closure of the pending NCAA issues with Ohio State.

However, shortly after Noon today, at about 12::30 PM, Conley and Oden signed their letters of intent to play basketball at Ohio State under the condition that if any postseason was lost for their freshmen seasons, they could have the option of being released from the letter.

Conley and Oden committed to the Buckeyes on June 30 over Wake Forest after a couple of months of indecision. Oden ranks as the No. 1 player in the country by Scouthoops.com while Conley is ranked as the No. 4 point guard. Last season, Oden averaged 20 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.6 blocks a game as a junior.

David Lighty, a 6-5 wing from Cleveland Villa Angela St. Joseph signed his letter of intent this afternoon at his high school. Lighty, who is recovered now from a torn ACL suffered at the beginning of March, averaged 24 points a game as a junior. He committed to Ohio State in May.

Lighty announced at a 3:30 press conference at his school that he also has joined the Ohio State recruiting class.

"I signed everything already, and then we faxed it in," he confirmed. "I feel like I got a big chip off my shoulder. Now it's time to focus on my season and my team."

He also was pleased to know that Cook, Conley and Oden joined him in signing instead of waiting.

"I talked to Greg, I think Saturday, and he said he was signing," Lighty noted. "My thing was I wanted us to sign the same day and get it out of the way."

Regardless of what had happend with the other three, Lighty said he would have signed in the early signing period. However, he did say that Ohio State has told all of the recruits that the worst that would happen is possibly a loss of scholarships or taking down banners.

But Lighty has become the fourth member to sign in the 2006 Ohio State recruiting class.

"I can't wait to get to O-State," he concluded. "I'm excited."

The fifth and final cog of Thad Matta’s illustrious group is Othello Hunter. Hunter is a 6-9 forward/center from Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Fla.

Originally a native of Winston-Salem, Hunter has only been playing basketball for three seasons. He committed to Ohio State towards the end of September over UTEP, Colorado, USC, Oklahoma, South Florida and others.

Hunter visited Ohio State, UTEP and Colorado. He is a good rebounder and shot blocker, and will play both the four and five at Ohio State. Hunter is also expected to sign this afternoon.

A published report in today's Columbus Dispatch stated that Ohio State gave the players written assurance that they could be let out of their letters of intent if Ohio State is banned from postseason play in 2006-07. Cook stated that if by chance something happened that would cause the rest of the players to leave, he would more than likely leave as well, but he spoke with Lighty, Oden and Conley last night and said the players are not focusing on any of the negative aspects of the investigation.

"(I'm) not really worried," Cook said. "We're only thinking positive about the situation. Me and the coach have been talking and he just told me some of the things and the violations they have gotten. They're just more likely to take away scholarships, not including our scholarships."

This year's class is rated by recruiting analysts as either the nation's No. 1 or No. 2 class. Cook didn't get too caught up in the rankings but at the same time said to believe the hype.

"It's fun, but I don't pay much attention," he said. "It's true, but it's going to take work."

For Cook and the other members of this class, there is only one goal.

"Championships," he said. "That's all you can think about right now is winning. We all come from winning places. The only thing to do is put it together and win more."

Can this class push for a championship in year one?

"It's going to take a lot of work, but I'm not going to doubt us," Cook said.

Some of the discussion surrounding this year's recruiting class has focused on just how long the players will be staying in college. Oden would likely be the No. 1 selection in this year's NBA draft if he were eligible, and Cook also has the next level in mind.

"I want to come in and contribute to the team however I can," Cook said. "(But) I'm going to have to step it up one of these years because I plan on one day playing in the NBA."

The Thad Five got its start in mid-March when Cook surprised people by committing early to Ohio State. He called Powell late one night and said he wanted to commit, so they talked and the next day they went to Columbus. Before leaving, they committed to Matta and announced it a day later at a press conference at Dunbar High School.

Stay tuned for updates within the story and also on Bucknuts.com, as Matta will meet with the media at 5:30 PM this evening to discuss the 2005 recruiting class. Due to NCAA rules, he will only be able to comment on the players he has received a letter of intent from.

A little C&P job for you folks on OU's class...

Keith Clark
Position: Small Forward/Power Forward
Height: 6-8
Weight: 215
Hometown: Oklahoma City, Okla.
School: Putnam City High School
Ranking: Four-star ranked No. 46 nationally by Scout.com

Image

Why Oklahoma: I've been a big Oklahoma fan all of my life. So when I committed to them last spring it was a very easy decision for me. I also thought about Georgia Tech, Georgia, Texas Tech and Kansas, but in my heart I knew that it would be in my best interest if I wound up going to OU. I remember growing up that my family would take me to as many OU games as they could. They really got things going there right now, and have had it going for a long time.

On his game: I feel I can score on the inside or the outside. Whatever the team needs I can get the job done.

Scout.com Basketball Recruiting Analyst Dave Telep on Clark: There's no limit on how good he can be. He's 6-8 and is a great athlete. He can go out and shoot the three or he can go inside and become a rebounding machine. When he has his game going he makes things look so easy because he is such a tremendous athlete. There are times when he looks like he isn't putting out the effort that he needs to put out. But I really think that will change once he gets to college.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tony Crocker
Position: Shooting Guard/Small Forward
Height: 6-5
Weight: 190
Hometown: San Antonio, Texas
School: Patterson School (Patterson, N.C.)
Ranking: Four-star ranked No. 6 nationally in the Scout.com Post Graduate Top 24
Image
Why Oklahoma: I have been committed to OU for a long time and I am glad I am finally going to get a chance to sign with them. I see myself fitting in real well (at Oklahoma) because I can play more than one position. I can play the one, two or three, but I think shooting guard is my best position. That is where I am playing here at Patterson.
On his game: I am a scraper type of player. I think I am a slasher because I love to get to the hole. And I think I am a good defensive player because I love to play defense. I can shoot the 3-ball really well and I have a good pull-up jumper. I averaged 81 percent form the free throw line.
Scout.com Basketball Recruiting Analyst Dave Telep on Crocker: The Oklahoma Sooners wound up with one of the better kept Big 12 secrets this recruiting season. He can really score it with skill and range. On a roster loaded with talent, Crocker stands out as a player who might be on the verge of a breakout season.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Damion James
Position: Power Forward/Small Forward
Height: 6-8
Weight: 225
Hometown: Nacogdoches , Texas
School: Nacogdoches High School
Ranking: Five-Star ranked No. 17 Nationally by Scout.com

Image

Why Oklahoma: Oklahoma just gave me more love. Texas recruited me really hard, but they just didn't give me as much love. When it came down to the end I decided to pick OU over North Carolina. At the end, I just thought Oklahoma was the best fit for me. Also, I know that I will have a chance to come in and play right away. That was important to me.

On his game: I can do everything. I can shoot the three. I can dunk the ball. I can play defense. I'm working a lot harder right now on my defense because I know that's something that coach Sampson really stresses.

Scout.com Basketball Recruiting Analyst Dave Telep on James: Damion James was one of those players that the NBA people were talking about, as far as high- school players with the chance of being a first-round pick next year. He's that kind of talent. Here we have a 6-8 player who does it all. He handles the ball. He can go inside and score or he can go outside and shoot the ball. The bottom line is that he's one of the best high-school players in the country.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jeremy Mayfield
Position: Center/Power Forward
Height: 6-10
Weight: 225
Hometown: Irving, Texas
School: Gulf Shores Academy (Houston)
Ranking: Four-star ranked No. 4 nationally in the Scout.com Post Graduate Top 24
Image
Why Oklahoma: They showed me a lot of love. The coaching staff was straightforward with me and told me how I can help them. I can go in there and get some work done and make it to the next level.
AAU coach Craig Roberts on Mayfield's game: He’s versatile. He handles the ball like a guard and has good range from 18 to 20 feet. He’s talented and has gotten bigger and stronger, but he needs to get up for every game. He’s got to give consistent effort – come rain or shine, he should get 14 points and 10 rebounds every game.
Scout.com Basketball Recruiting Analyst Dave Telep on Mayfield: This is a young man who a lot of tools to work with. He's big, will be college-ready strength wise, and has athlecism and versatility to his power forward package. He would have been a steal at Nevada and he'll be ready to come into Norman and make it happen with the Sooners.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Scottie Reynolds
Position: Point Guard
Height: 6-0
Weight: 185
Hometown: Herndon, Va.
School: Herndon High School
Ranking: Four-star ranked No. 31 nationally by Scout.com

Image

Why Oklahoma: “I just loved everything about the school. I loved coach Sampson and his assistants. They made me feel at ease. And I think they can make me a better player. In the end, it was a pretty easy decision for me. I’m excited about getting a chance to play there. We have something going that is special. I have become good friends with Damion James and Keith Clark. We talk all of the time. We’re excited about what is going to happen in the future.

On his game: There’s no doubt in my mind that I can be a point guard in college. The thing that I want to do is make people around me better. I love to pass the ball. And I think I do a good job at it. The thing that is the most important to me is winning. That’s what it’s all about. In high school they need me to shoot the ball more and score. When I play with these all-star teams they need me to run the point, pass the ball and also score. I think I have shown people that I have a pretty well-rounded game. It’s very important to me to be a leader on the court.”

Scout.com Basketball Recruiting Analyst Dave Telep on Reynolds: I just love his game. First of all, this guy can flat-out shoot the ball. He’s a pure shooter who can also penetrate and score. He’s a very dynamic player. The more people who saw him play, the more they began falling in love with him. He had a great summer and his stock was continually rising.

Wow. That Damion James guy looks like a 28 year-old NBA veteran! Sounds like a huge get for Sampson and company.

You know.... I see pictures of these "kids".... and I can only laugh at the thought of my 17 year-old body trying to guard a guy like Damion James or Dequan Cook. Bwwwwwwwwwahahahaha.

Bingo

i bet 2 of their kids go 1 and done.

players are going to use schools, especially ones either on probation, or in need of help, to get the PT to be ready for next years draft. If your a 1 and done, why go to North Carolina, go to a school where you will start, has national exposure, and move yourself up the draft!

I hate Mike Davis.

In yet another rich class in the state of Indiana, all IU could muster was a commit from an academic risk PG who had previously committed to Criminal Quinn and Mizzou and a 6-6 bean pole from Alabama.

Did I mention that I hate Mike Davis.

players are going to use schools, especially ones either on probation, or in need of help, to get the PT to be ready for next years draft. If your a 1 and done, why go to North Carolina, go to a school where you will start, has national exposure, and move yourself up the draft!
Can't do that anymore with the NBA's new draft rules.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Nervous? Who, Mike Davis?

Everyone from East Chicago to Evansville may know that if Indiana doesn't reach the NCAA tournament this year, and probably make some noise once there, that Davis likely is out as coach after six years with the Hoosiers.

Davis and IU athletics director Rick Greenspan even said about as much in a joint press release last year, stating the goals for the season are contending for the Big Ten title and doing well in the NCAAs.

IU hasn't reached the tournament the last two seasons, the longest drought since 1971-72. It is just 42-42 over the last 2½ seasons. From Josh McRoberts (Duke) to Greg Oden (Ohio State), the best local recruits keep signing out of state. And there still is a significant faction of Bob Knight loyalists who don't think the soft-spoken Alabama native should have been promoted in the first place.

We are a long way from the feel-good run to the 2002 national championship game when Davis' future seemed limitless.

So is Mike Davis nervous about a season with so much at stake?

"You feel nervous when you don't have a team," Davis said. "Last year I woke up nervous. I hoped we'd be .500 in the non-conference. You know you don't have the horses to compete."

Davis said that in a very matter-of-fact manner. It is proof he doesn't just think he has a team this year; he thinks he has a great one, at least when everyone is healthy. Considering recent injuries to D.J. White, the reigning Big Ten freshman of the year who is out six to eight weeks, and starting off guard A.J. Ratliff, that no longer is the case.

"If you asked me what I thought of this team a week ago, I would have had a different answer," Davis said.

Actually, it seems only a little different. While an early-season schedule that includes games against Duke and Kentucky might not play out as it could have, Davis still is confident IU will more than exceed minimum expectations.

The only issue is the injuries.

"I guess it shows how deep we were," Davis said after IU manhandled Division II Indianapolis 96-49 in an exhibition game Thursday in which the coach's No. 1 priority was "not getting hurt."

This is the season Davis has been building toward. The program took an understandable setback in recruiting during his first and second years at the helm, as uncertainty about his future scared off prospects. Now he has four seniors, including guard Marshall Strickland and big man Marco Killingsworth, a transfer from Auburn, and a big-time sophomore class (led by White). That means freshmen won't be leaned on too much.

It is why Davis is convinced IU is capable of some great things. He calls this group far more talented than the Hoosier team he led to the 2002 championship game.

"The championship-run team has only one guy in the lineup [Jared Jeffries] still playing basketball [professionally]," Davis said. "That will tell you about the level of talent."

And so, no matter what all the talk show and Internet chatter says and no matter the joint press release, Davis is anything but worried about the season.

"I know I can coach," he said. "I know that for a fact.

"If I am at Indiana next year, that would be wonderful. If I am not at Indiana, I can get a job somewhere. I'm not waking up every morning wondering if I will be here next year or not. I think you do that, and [your team] plays scared."

Davis is correct about that. It was interesting to see him so relaxed during an afternoon shootaround, considering his history of high-profile outbursts here.

Maybe it is experience. Maybe it is the hopeful air that is common in the preseason. Maybe it is the finality of it all. Davis' future has been a hot topic since he became the interim coach following the contentious firing of Knight in the fall of 2000.

If nothing else, this season will answer some questions. Win and perhaps everything is fine. Lose and at least it is settled. At the very least, he has a team he likes to fight with.

Davis laughs at that, though. Next year is next year.

"I just don't think about that," he smiled. "I'm not worrying about that."

For what it is worth, the coach who enters the season under the most pressure in the country sure looks relaxed.

Dan Wetzel is Yahoo! Sports' national columnist. Dan's new book, "Runnin' Rebel: Shark Tales of 'Extra Benefits,' Frank Sinatra and Winning It All" with coach Jerry Tarkanian, is on sale now.

I thought you had to NBDL to obtain that route. If you enter college your stuck. Like baseball... I could be wrong.

Duke's got three kids right now - they beat out Illinois for WF John Scheyer and picked up 7' C Greg Zoubek and WF Gerald Henderson from the Philly area. All are top 30. I think they would like to pick up one more, but I really can't keep up with all the rumors.

A little late but I'll represent. http://www.rivals.com has us ranked 24th in the country. Not where I'd like to be, but I'll take it for now if improvement is on the way.
The Irish's class is small but important. Mike Brey is brining in two guys that can start from day one in Tory Jackson, who surprised a number of folks when he picked Notre Dame over Michigan and USC. Indiana native Luke Harangody is old school toughness that Indiana traditionalists love.

Can't wait. But Thad could get the Bucks into the NCAA this season-- possibly an 8-10 seed.
