Aikman, White among 25 Hall of Fame finalists

CANTON, Ohio -- Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman and perennial All-Pro defensive end Reggie White head a list of 25 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The board of selectors chose them from a list of 112 preliminary nominees, the hall said Thursday. A list of 15 finalists will be announced in mid-January.
The class of 2006 will be determined at the selection committee's annual meeting Feb. 4 in Detroit, the day before the Super Bowl.
The list of 25 will be reduced by mail ballot to 13 modern-era candidates. The list will increase to 15 finalist nominees with the inclusion of the two recommended candidates of the hall's seniors committee.
This year, they are former Oakland Raiders coach John Madden, and former Cowboys tackle Rayfield Wright.
Aikman led the Cowboys to three Super Bowl victories and was selected to six straight Pro Bowls.
White, who died last December, finished second in career sacks with 198 and was a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year. White, who spent 15 seasons with Philadelphia, Green Bay and Carolina, was elected to the Pro Bowl a record 13 straight times from 1986-98.
Other modern-era semifinalists are linebackers Harry Carson, Randy Gradishar and Derrick Thomas; center Dermontti Dawson; running back Thurman Thomas; wide receivers Michael Irvin, Andre Reed and Art Monk; defensive ends Fred Dean, Richard Dent, L.C. Greenwood and Claude Humphrey; quarterbacks Warren Moon and Ken Stabler; guards Russ Grimm and Bob Kuechenberg; offensive tackle Gary Zimmerman; cornerbacks Lester Hayes and Roger Wehrli; punter Ray Guy; club owners Art Modell and Ralph Wilson, Jr., and administrator George Young.
I see a few Raider greats made the list. Any chargers in there?
Tom Flores should be in the HOF before Madden. More proof that HOF is more of a popularity contest. Or maybe they just don't like Mexicans.

Well. That cinches it! Start carving Drew Brees' bust, as statistically he should leave Aikman in the dust.

There really should be 9 guys going into the Hall this year.
Troy Aikman
Dermontti Dawson
Russ Grimm
Michael Irvin
Art Monk
Warren Moon
Thurman Thomas
Reggie White
Gary Zimmerman
But, since the rules only allow for a max of 6 I'm guessing that the class will look like this...
Aikman, White, George Young, Ralph Wilson (dude is 88 so they might want to rush him in while he's still alive), Madden, Thomas.
Art Monk gets stiffed again.

unfortunately.
when you retire as the WR who has more catches than anybody in the history of the league- that includes all other WR's that are in the hall of fame- AND you set a record for most catches in a season....you should be in.

Sirfindafold, Madden doesnt belong in the HOF? Dude should have made HOF 10 years ago.
The List of 6 should read like this:
Aikman
White
Thomas
Monk
Young
Madden
Monk should have been in First or Second Ballot. I think its bullshit if Irvin gets in before Monk.

Never said that. I just think that two time Super Bowl winning coach Tom Flores should go first before Madden. He should of definitely gone in before Marv Levy.
Flores doesn't even get any consideration (as far as I know).
Like I said, maybe they just don't like Mexicans. Where's Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Cesar Chavez when you need them.

Better to ask the press rep from Oakland who nominates former Raiders for the HoF what he is thinking. If the local press guy has it in for you, you will never make it.
Also, I suspect the impression that Al Davis is really calling the shots for the Raiders has hurt the chances for both Flores and Madden.

club owners Art Modell and Ralph Wilson, Jr., and administrator George Young
Since the HOF has a limit each year I don't see how Owners & Administrators
ever qualify. What a fuckin' joke. I'm sure fans can't wait to flock to the HOF to see George Youngs Bust.....
And why have a limit anyway? Either a guy is a HOFer or he isn't.
Dana I also don't see how Irvin gets in before Monk. Both were the go to guys on their teams in their prime. The biggest difference, one has class, and the other is an ass. I guess it pays as a player to be a big mouth bitch who gets a lot of air time.

Mr. Davis?
Are you 5 or something?
And yes, there is a perception that Al Davis dictates coaching strategy. Sucks for Madden and Flores, but that is the way it is.

The Art Monk geyser is not set to erupt for another three months, especially since the Brees Comet is currently visible in the night sky.
Just not quite ready to dig back into that one, Joe.

He was a completely one dimensional player who played way out of control way too many times. Honestly the most enduring Derrick Thomas moment was his personal foul meltdown in primetime against the duhs.
Sober up, tubby.
That was against the Donks, fuckpuddle-namely, Shannon fucking Sharpe.
Great game, btw.

Didn't Sharpe lay the wood to one of DT's skanks and then spill her digits for all to hear on the field?

I forgot ALL about that crazy madness-RACK Sharpe for blasting one of DT's skanks with his Horsejizz, and then emberassing him and his cocksock on national TV, and RACK Toos for the post about it.

White - should be unanimous
Monk - shoulda been in a loooong time ago
Madden
Moon - You won't admit it, but you know I'm right
BUM FUCKING PHILLIPS!!!
That's six. Fuck Troy Aikman. No fags in the Hall. Dude had the greatest offensive line EVAR with the leading rusher of all time, combined with one of the top 3 fullbacks of all time, combined with one of the top five
tight ends* of all time, combined with Irvin and Harper. Hell, Drew Brees coulda been Joe Montana if surrounded by all that.

Rozy, minus the fag crack .... dunno, dont care, and my lack of time tonight, I do find what you have brought up very worthy of discussion. Basically,
in your own way, you brought up an issue I was thinking about when looking at the ballot and through the rest of this thread.
If you look at the entire list of HOF players, you do not find many, that were not surrounded by other HOF players or at a minimum, pretty decent talent. Using your example, take away one or two key components, and Aikmen/Smith/Irvin could quite possibly be thought of as nothing more than good players.
Now take someone like Barry Sanders. THAT is a true HOF'er.
Id love for you to reset this thread in late Feb, or early March. Great topic.

John Madden
Ray Guy
Art Monk
Troy Aikman
Reggie White
Thurman Thomas
The above are all no-brainers.
Warren Moon, Randy Gradishar, Dermontti Dawson, Andre Reed, Derrick Thomas, Gary Zimmerman, CLOSE.
Andre Reed ought to go in before Michael Irvin, IMO.
Warren Moon is the most interesting case on the ballot this time. His NFL stats alone are better than Dan Fouts, for instance. Better numbers, more pro-bowls, etc.
Toss in his CFL exploits and he dwarfs (in sheer numbers) every QB who ever played.
Yes, it is the PRO FOOTBALL Hall of Fame, not the NFL Hall of Fame.
How much weight should be given to his CFL exploits...?
Important question.
Ultimately, I think he will get in.
He's as deserving as Dan Farts, IMO.

Wehrli would have been inducted a LONG time ago if he had played for say.........Pittsburgh or Dallas of the 70s.
Obviously playing on a crap team reduces one's chances of getting in, in what is largely a 'popularity contest'.....particularly when a player was a 'non skill position' performer.
No sheer numbers put up for everyone to look at.
Much of it is reputation and hear-say.
If Wehrli got voted in I would be alright with it, but Randy Gradishar was, like Wehrli, a 7-time pro-bowler, and ALSO NFL defensive player of the year once (1978), something R. Wehrli never was.
Gradishar goes before Wehrli, IMO.
