Picked up R30 today and I must say it is very solid thus far. The production is better than Rush In Rio and the boys sound awesome.

Disc 2 has some great old sound checks and and live performances from way back in the day.

Looking forward to when they release their older concerts onto DVD in the next year or so.

Yes. The production quality is much better. The second DVD is pretty sweet with all the extras and older performances.

Kind of disappointed that By-Tor and La Villa got cut from the concert. They were huge highlights from the last two tours. Overall, I do like it a lot. Don't really care for the lip synch videos of Xanadu and Kings on disc 2, but the interviews are very interesting.

I've been out of the loop as far as Rush news. What venue is this show from? I think I'll pick this up today. And although I loved their admiration, I can do without 50,000 sreaming Brazilians this time around.

They cut the crowd noise down on purpose and focused more on the production side of the music. One of the criticisms on RIR was the crowd noise drowned out the music.

Kutter, they cut 8 songs from the playlist. Those songs were ones they felt they had played enough over the past few tours and were also on RIR.

So they cut La Villa and Bytor, what were the others?

The interviews are great. I especially liked the one from 1980 where all the guys are interviewed at once (which is a rare thing). Lifeson pretty much didn't say a damn word, and let Peart and Geddy do all the talking. He's really changed since then.

La Villa and By-Tor shouldn't have been cut since they don't play those tunes much.

But dude ^ they were just played on RIR. I'd much rather have Subdivisions and Xanadu and some of the "Feedback" stuff in there, than those two or three we've seen and heard live more recently.

True, but so were many other songs that were played on RIR. Subdivisions and Red Barchetta were awesome live. Xanadu was solid as well.

The songs from Feedback were good as well.

Having Between the Wheels on there is a highlight for me (even though they're playing it almost at half speed). I wish they played more obscure stuff from GUP, Signals and Power Windows, but I know they probably won't on what I presume will be potentially their last tour.

i didn't think 'wheels' was played half speed, not all of it at least

I'm pretty sure the Fear trilogy is played on the Grace Under Pressure Tour concert video (which I have on VHS)...I've only watched it once since the sound and production is so bad. However, it's supposed to be released on DVD soon (along with E...SL and ASOH)...or so they say.

The weapon is a good tune. Very underrated.

There are 2 Easter Eggs I have found on Disc 2. At the main menu and the interview menu screen I hit the right arrow button like 4 times and a new icon showed up.

Having digested this disc for days now, I've come to a few conclusions:

#1. Don't tell me those were empty seats, first balcony, Frankfort. God damn! It's fucking Rush, man!
A shot I paused from behind and sideways, of Gary showed scores of empties in the first balcony.
Hey guys?! If you want to ever record another concert DVD for sale, and need optimum sound AND crowd participation; just roll over here to your west a couple hundred miles, to The Palace of Auburn Hills, Mi. We'll cram 25,000+ into that bitch, and give you what you were looking for. (Crowd noise dubbed out at your descretion, of course.)
Frankfort was lame. Either that, or they were seriously on some mind altering substances. But, to not sell that sucker out, is embarrassing, man.

#2. This Concert is an obvious contender for a Grammy, (if they give such things out at the Grammies.)
These guys are all pushing 50 years young, (Gary Lee has to be.)
Alex talked about how they've known each other since Jr. High. Well; I think Gary got held back a few grades then, Alex.
But the quality of the recording is phenominal. Tight, crisp and concise chords, by a group of dudes that should be taking it easy by now. Groups like Aerosmith and the Stones are examples of bands who are just playin their fans for a quick buck. - Don't even go there. They can't touch Rush live.

#3. Speaking of the recording - Great job highlighting Alex more than RIR. The RIR concert recording as a whole, seemed like it was just thrown together (quality wise) vs. this R30 show.
It's almost as if they KNEW they had to do a real DVD recording, after the "imperfect" (by Rushs' standards) sound they got from Rio. The screaming WAS a bit much. And may have even been intentional, since they did have problems with that show, I recall.
In my opinion. I still love Rio for what it is. A fun festival of rock that we all as fans needed to quench our pallets on.
They hadn't released any concert footage since Show of Hands in 1989, fopr Christs sake!
THIS R30 show is a true accounting of the greatness of this bands history. Like a fine wine, these guys have actually gotten better! Consumate professional recording ARTISTS.
Alex looked like he was really having a great time out there. We're all very lucky Niel decided to "........get back to be GAINFULLY EMPLOYED...." - as Gary put it in the 2002 interview talking about the 5 years off.
They almost desolved the band, people. I'm just hoping that since there are all these releases and tours this last few years, that this doesn't spell the impending end.
I hope and pray they tell at least tell us all that they are retiring the act, before they do their last CD and world tour. It'll be one not to be missed.
I've said it beofre, I hope Rush doesn't go the Aerosmith or Stones route. Just hanging on forever. Not really caring if they don't put out any new material. Screw the fans. They'll come and spend $80 bucks, and watch us mammble and scribble through our oldies. Meanwhile we'll be raking in the cash, for a quick payday.
Rush has NEVER seemed to be artists who would do that.
That's why I don't think there'll be many more albums or tours. Sadly.
I don't care how magnificent you are, things just don't work as well as they used to, when you get into your 50's and certainly 60's. (Like the ancient Stones) :roll:
Reflexes. Timing. Musical ingenuity. Things we've all been super spoiled on with this group. I will not stand for watching Niel fumble through his solo, man. No way. I'd prefer he just give it up. I'll cherish the 6 memories I have of wittnessing the "Professor" in his prime.

During 'Animate', there is a shot from behind, and Gary's left hand, that you can plainly see the first balcony, stage right. (Near where Alex would be)
It's a fairly quick shot, I had to freeze it a couple tries. There were tens and tens of empties visible.
Believe me. But, of course, they could have done more than one show, and that song was from a night that was sold second. whatever. I love the sound way better, though. I'm so glad they decided to do this. Rio was a bit rough to get through. I had to squelch the surround modes from all the crowd they dubbed in. (Intentional, In my opinion) to cover the accoustic probs they had with their equipment, AND that huge airfield of a stadium.

Apparently Exit....Stage Left is to be released on DVD on February 7.

i haven't seen the vhs---any good?
