The Winter meetings are underway this week...looking forward to seeing what happens with Manny, Burnett and others.

A couple recent moves...
Furcal agrees to terms with the Dodgers. The Cubs have got to be kicking themselves for letting him get away unless they're able to get Pierre from the Marlins.

The Mets acquire LoDuca from the Marlins for a minor league pitcher. They've clearly been the most active team in the offseason thus far none of their recent moves have paid off.

The Cards forums are atwitter with the rumors that Cardfan since childhood AJ Burnett has already agreed to a deal with the Cards that will be unveiled at the winter meetings.

That's been the team I've seen as the leading candidates to get him. Is Morris a goner for sure? I'd love for the Tigers to take a run at him or Millwood.

Cards aren't talking to him. They say they will be making a run at him if the price is right, but Morris' agent has said that Walt is busy trying to get Burnett. Other departed free agents have said the same thing about our GM. Seems as if he can't multi-task

It's down to either the Jays or Cards for Burnett.

I still think Toronto will land him, that Burnett's just holding out to see if the Cards will give him that 5th year which Toronto has offered.

He's playing one against the other at this point..

Plan B for the Jays would be signing Washburn or something else that made the rounds today, although I'd hate to see how much it would take, a possible trade for Zito.

How pissed off is Joe Giradi? Dude gets hired and then they trade EVERYONE. Next up is Pierre. They say if they move him the Marlins payroll will have dropped from 68 mil to 19.

Makes you wonder why Budlight and MLB doesn't step in and take control of the franchise for the betterment of the game.

I mean this is Jeffrey Loria that's doing it..
He's already got this act down pact from dismantling the Expos and then bailing on them..

2 Championships make it harder. That wasn't anything the Expos ever had to worry about.

[ducks the incoming scud]I know, the Stros haven't gotten a ring YET, either[/stands back up]

Tampa's roster and minors are so loaded that the Marlins will be an afterthought in Florida soon, and maybe at THAT point MLB can step in. But the 2 championships would make it hard right now.

Maybe so but at least they have stable ownership and a very attractive ballpark.
Loria's not and the Marlins don't.

The Marlins will be an afterthought this season.
How many fans are going to pay to watch a triple A team.

AND

RACK the fuck out of the Toronto Blue Jays...
Jays go the distance in talks with Burnett

A.J. Burnett

TSN.ca with CP files

DALLAS - A.J. Burnett's agent was talking early into Tuesday morning with the Toronto Blue Jays.

ESPN is reporting that the two sides are wrapping up final details on a five-year, $55 million contract. The sides anticipate the deal being finalized later Tuesday.

The Globe and Mail reported on its website that the deal had been agreed to and that Burnett was scheduled to arrive at the baseball winter meetings for an afternoon news conference on Tuesday.

Citing sources, the Globe said the Burnett will receive $7 million next season, including a signing bonus, and $12-million each for the next four years of the deal.

Sources said that St. Louis Cardinals who were the other team still in the running for Burnett had faded from contention, as they were unwilling to add a fifth year.
The news conference has reportedly been called for 5pm today to announce the signing.

Halliday, Burnett, Chacin, Lilly and Towers or Bush..
Not a bad starting five.

Now there's talks that they're talking trade with the Brewers for Overbay and with the Phillies for Abreu

Otis- Abreu isn't going to Toronto.. he has a no trade clause in his contract.
Cub's are reportedly interested in Bobby and the Phillies have asked for Prior.

The Phillies allegedly told Abreu's agent that he was not on the trading block but with his name being tossed around it seems like he'll be gone before spring training..

Now if they could only trade divisions with the Indians, they might get to the playoffs.

Maybe maybe not..

There are rumours of a possible multiple player deal rumbling about up here though and his name was mentioned.

And don't forget, your new GM does have that Toronto connection.
He still has a home here.

With the signing of Burnett and Ryan, the dominoe effect lets them move some of their excess of starters, most of whom are young and highly touted in a trade for a couple of bats.
Yankee fan's not going to like watching this coming season looking up at the 2 teams ahead of them, Toronto and Boston.
It's still early but I'm telling you now, JP's not finished yet... this team is headed to the post season this year.

Manny Ramirez for Troy Glaus and others..

***

One of the juiciest rumors to hit the lobbies in Dallas is a three-team exchange in which Ramirez would go to the Angels, with prospects going to Arizona and slugging third baseman Troy Glaus going from the Diamondbacks to Boston.

If the Red Sox landed Glaus, they would probably ask him to convert to first base. Mike Nicotera, who represents Glaus, said that the slugger would be willing to move to first base in "the right situation."

**

Edgar Reneterria for a Six Pack of Beer AND a pizza to be named later.

**

Kevin E. Youkilis (Greek God of Walks) to some lucky team for Pitching.

Whoever gets this kid will get a good ball player with STAR potential that the Red Sox just can't seem to get playing time for.

Heard on FSN Detroit last night, the Tigers were close to a deal with Arizona to get Javier Vazquez and Glaus for Curtis Granderson, their top outfield prospect and Joel Zumaya, their #2 pitching prospect. Vazquez refused the deal... :x

EDIT: A piece in The Detroit News about the rumor...

EDIT #2: Tigers allegedly interested in Kenny Rogers...please G0D no! :?

Deals on the verge of happening...

Cubs picking up Juan Pierre for Sergio Mitre and prospects
Pirates getting Sean Casey for lefty Dave Williams

Already went down...Steve Kline to the Giants for LaTroy Hawkins

A hot rumor I heard ESPN Radio this morning was Barry Zito to the Mets...supposedly they're already talking contract extension with him.

I've read the Braves are interested in Renteria after losing Furcal. A three-way was mentioned with Tampa Bay where the Sox would get Julio Lugo. I'm sure you've heard or read about that one.

$55 mill for a decent pitcher with a career losing record and an ERA over 4? Can you say overpaid?

Same can be said about them throwing that money at Ryan. I never call a guy overpaid until you see them perform in the new uniform. If they perform and the team improves, you can't knock the investment.

Can Burnett or Ryan help them score runs? I think most teams get better offensive production from their 1st basemen than the Jays get from their entire infield.

Burnett hasn't won more than 12 games in a season and he's only done it 2x. If offering a guy $11 mill a year for a mediocre career spanning 7 years isn't overpaying then you're on crack.

They were saying the Cardinals NEVER offered 40mil for 4 years. That was Burnett agent trying to get the best deal and push the price.

Rack Walt for not overpaying for Burnett

If Reyes Starts, i'll wager with anyone, that Reyes has a better W/L record and era at end of year.

No, but the 'Stros did. Thankfully it never materialized.

Also just heard the 'Stros are in serious discussions about a "major" deal on the AM dial. Rumored were Bobby A, Manny or Dontrelle Willis. Lidge is being shopped, and shopped hard...along with Backe, allegedly.

Clemens......gone. We couldn't be held hostage like that so props to Drayton for finally putting loyalty aside and making a solid decision.

I sincerely hope the Burnett shit RackX was talking about was just that. I would MUCH rather see us go after Millwood and Jacque Jones.

Lidge being shopped had better be a VERY BAD JOKE!

Millwood good pickup, back to NL

Jacque Jones is bad pickup for his asking price

trading Lidge would be the dumbest move a GM could ever make. Some teams can never find the dominating fireballer to nail down games. they could draft for decades and not find that guy. Astros have that guy, and there is no Wild Card bid without Lidge. No WS without Lidge!
