Top 5 Games of 2005?

You can interpret this however you want...I'm picking my 5 based on which games were the most influential on how things turned out this year.
1. October 15: USC 34, Notre Dame 31--Arguably the most exciting game of the year...came down to the last play. Notre Dame gave USC their biggest scare of the season. What if the Irish won this game?
2. September 10: Texas 25, Ohio State 22--The biggest game in the first half of the season. This game proved that Vince Young was for real and that this was going to be Texas' year.
3. October 15: Michigan 27, Penn State 25--Looking back at it now, Penn State finished their season only one play away from an unbeaten season and possibly having a claim for the Rose Bowl. A great turnaround for Paterno and the Nittany Lions but a tough loss after beating the Buckeyes the week before.
4. October 8: Penn State 17, Ohio State 10--Both teams did BCS bids but at the time kept Penn State unbeaten and was a huge message that was by the team to the rest of the nation: they were back.
5. November 5: Miami 27, Virginia Tech 7--Virginia Tech was being trumpeted as a title contender until the Hurricanes blew into town and put those the ideas to rest and ended Marcus Vick's Heisman campaign.
Honorable Mention...
November 19: USC 50, Fresno State 42--Trojans get a major scare from a gutty Fresno team but this was the game that Reggie Bush clinched the Heisman with his 513 all-purpose yards and 2 TDs.

Loved the list and I agree on most of them.
1 USC v. ND
2 Mich v. Penn St
3 Texas v. tOSU
4 USC v. Fresno St
5 FSU v. Miami

As far as pure excitement and hype, I'd agree with Shoalzie's top 4, but I'd swap out his #5 for the ND/MSU game.

That game was awesome. It was the best football game I've ever been to, and the most electric atmosphere at ND in 12 years. Only to be out done the next time ND had a home game.

I would use this term "campaign" in the loosest sense when discussing MVick v2. I wonder how many 16 yr olds he will corrupt this off season.
Here are my top 5:
1. USC vs ND - even though Bush's push was technically illegal and PC and MLeinart attempted some horrible acting ("spike the ball") it was a great finish to the best game of the year. Reggie Bush made his first Heisman statment.
2. OSU vs UT - for a game with this much hype to actually deliver is a miracle in its own right. UT came into a rediculously hostile atmosphere and showed they were the only team deserving of shot at the NC (besides the obvious)
3. MSU vs ND - Overshadowing Quinn's amazing performance (487 yds/5 TDs) was a MSU showing that proved quite uncharacteristic. MSU allowed ND to overcome a 21 pt defecit but hung tough, made it to OT and won on a clever option pitch.
4. PSU vs UM - A back and forth game that was probably the best win for UM this year. Henne showed great poise leading his team down the field and scoring with 1 (questionable) second left on the clock.
5. Fresno vs USC - A rediculously back and forth game that showed a lot of character for the red-headed step child. FSU was up at half, fell behind two scores but fought until the end. Reggie Bush, again, showed why he will win the Heisman.
HM: OSU vs UM, Miami vs GT, FSU vs VT

Great list, Shoalzie.
As far as exciting games go, I think you could include just about any of Michigan's games from this year.
Off the top of my head:
vs. Wisconsin
vs. MSU
vs. Penn State
vs. Minnesota
vs. Iowa
vs. tOSU
... all came down to the final minute, half came down to the final play.

Well, as a die-hard fan and being that the game meant so much to Seminole fans it was a great game. Two badass def going at it and tons of future NFl talent duking it out on MNF football and if that game doesnt happen we dont get this:

I admit, I'm biased, but I think the Auburn/Georgia game deserves at least honorable mention this year.

Iowa vs ISU - fucking Tate and his 73 first round picks only scored 3 points
Iowa vs tOSU - fucking Tate and his 75 first round picks only scored 6 points and Tate pussified himself by slamming the ball on the turf much like the tOSU defense did to him all day...
yep those two games would make my top 5 as well...does plungering Jon in threads also count as a top 5 game? I think most of us have had our chance beating the board Pinanta...

USC-UCLA.
Just depends on how you define "great".
USC-ND will go down as
the "ESPN Classics Network" game of 2005. It had all the ingredients of an instant classic.

Except for the fact it was on NBC, so we will never see it again.

^^^^
If thats true, thats bullshit. The USC/Fresneck game was on FoxSportsNet and it took them two days before it was on Classic.

If Classic has been able to show NBA games from NBC in the past, I don't see why they won't have the Notre Dame games.

Because ABC is still pissed at ND for taking their ball to NBC. That's why the only ND home games you see on classic are from before 1991. No ND/FSU in '93, ND/BC '93, ND/UofM '94, ND/LSU '98, ND/BC '02 and why you will never see this game on ESPN classic.
