Portis out at UF

Looks like the only QB Urban is going to have behind Leak is Tebow, if he gets him.

Portis expected to transfer

By ROBBIE ANDREU/Sun sports writer

Florida freshman quarterback Josh Portis is making plans to transfer to another school, his mother told The Sun on Friday morning.
Patricia Portis said her son informed the UF coaches Thursday that he probably will transfer.

She said her son likely is leaving for a number of reasons, the most significant being a lack of playing time and a lack of opportunity to show his skills on the rare occasions he has played this season.

"Josh has been very loyal to the program, very loyal to the Gators," Patricia Portis said. "He's done everything he's been asked to do. He's been a good student and he's a great kid. The bottom line is (the coaches) won't let his talent be shown on the field. Maybe he needs to be at an institution where all his talents can be taken care of. He needs to grow. He needs to be in a situation where they will develop him and not put him in one play and take him out the next. They would only let him run the ball and if he made one mistake and they would take him out."

"A lot of things were told to him in recruiting. Coach (Urban) Meyer never told him he would start (as a true freshman), but he said he would give him a fair chance to compete. Josh feels he hasn't gotten that chance."Josh Portis could not be reached to confirm or deny what his mother told The Sun.

Meyer also could not be reached.Portis is not expected to remain with the team through the Jan. 2 Outback Bowl. Meyer said earlier this week that he hoped to give Portis some playing time in the bowl game.

Patricia Portis said if Josh transfers, it will not be to another SEC school.
Patricia Portis said her son's probable transfer is something he's been discussing with her for the past month.

"I can't go into detail," Patricia Portis said. "He just has to do what's best for him."Portis has played in six games this season, rushing for 163 yards on 29 carries and completing six of 12 passes for 81 yards, with one interception.

Patricia Portis said her son's lack of playing time isn't as disappointing as the fact he hasn't had a chance to show what he can do (especially in the passing game) when he does play.

She said she and Josh were especially upset that Josh didn't get an opportunity to play in the the second half of the Florida State game, a 34-7 Gator rout."If you're trying to develop your backup quarterback, don't you give him an opportunity in a situation like that?," Patricia Portis said. Patricia Portis said UF's recruitment of St. Augustine Nease's Tim Tebow, one of the nation's elite quarterback prospects, is not be a factor in Josh's decision."Heck no," she said. "It doesn't matter who they are going after. There are just a lot of things Josh is capable of doing and he hasn't had a chance to do them. There are no hard feelings. He's just going to do what he feels is best for him."

Josh Portis' relationship with Meyer goes back to his junior year at Taft High School in Woodland Hills, Calif. Portis committed to Meyer, who was the head coach at Utah, early in his senior season. When Meyer took the UF job last December, Meyer recruited Portis to Florida. Portis enrolled at UF last January and participated in spring drills. He has been Chris Leak's backup throughout the 2005 season. If Portis transfers it will leave the Gators with only two scholarship quarterbacks — Leak, a junior, and redshirt freshman Cornelius Ingram, whom the coaches were considering moving to another position after the season. Junior Gavin Dickey played quarterback in his first two seasons, but has been strictly a wide receiver in 2005.

No problem. I'm sure trex will come up with a way to spin positive on this.

What sucks is that Snead from Texas de-committed, so they better hope they get Tebow or Urban and the Gates are fucked in '08.

Not at all.....that is terrible news. If Leak goes down for any reason, we are screwed.

What makes no sense is that he will have to sit out a year anyway.......whether Leak is here or not.

He can come to FSU if he wants but we are pretty loaded at WR already.

Oh what could have been. There is no doubt in my mind that had he signed with USF that he would the #1 QB right now and there would certainly be a spot for him on the basketball team.

The word is that he's headed to UCLA. Now Karl Dorrell will have to deal with this kids over-bearing mother.

The "word" is nonsense. No way no how would he go to Ucla...Ben Olson is the QB of the future.....

Sounds like "coach" Patricia Portis should let her son go wherever she is in charge...

The kid needs to put his ego in check, you can't expect to come in behind Chris Leak at a major program and expect to play much right away. If a young qb wants to play as a frosh he needs to go to a lesser school. Why leave now? You are better off playing behind Leak another year and putting yourself in position to start in 07.

In the paper today......he has NOT made up his mind. He is UNHAPPY that his mother made it public. He sounds pissed at her.

Just a bumbling parent who wants all the glory. He is tight with Meyer.

He is NOT making any decision until AFTER the bowl game. His ego sounds in check. Its his mother's ego that sounds bruised.

Believe the Heupel wrote:Good deal. I thought this whole deal sounded pretty fucked up.

There's no way in hell he'd be headed to FSU-I can't imagine Florida releasing him from his scholarship to go to FSU, which would mean he'd have to sit out two years instead of one.
It was also reported this morning on Jax radio that meyer met with Portis and is quoted as saying that Portis DOES NOT want to leave UF.

WHat a fucking bitch.

A correction.....he could go to FSU and only sit out one. It's if he transfers to another SEC school he must sit for 2 years. At least, that's what I read today.

He still may go, but it will be on his terms not his moms.

That is accurate but if he did choose to leave UF it is up to UF to release him, if they don't give him the release then his only choice is to go Juco or DII. Phat Phil in Tennessee does that shit all the time. In this case though it would make sense that they make his release contengent upon where he decides to go.

BTW when I read about Parents like these, it makes me appreciate Phil Simms that much more. I can't imagine the amount of damage he could have done to Texas if he were as overbearing as mom Portis is.

Breaking news: Apparently, Portis was told to leave practice and was no longer allowed around the team. This of course having to do with him not being there next year. If he is staying, you let him practice. If he is definitely leaving, screw him. He was hoping to play in the bowl game. Fuck you dude. See ya.

It's not too late to go hardcore in wooing a good JUCO guy. That is what Neb did last December when they had lost faith in Dailey and didn't want to start a true frosh this year.

BUMP to coincide with the Tebow announcement.

There is no doubt in my mind he was going to UF all along.

Bama got used like a gas station condom.
