I've heard it would only be under certain conditions, such as complete control over player moves, and a salary in the neighborhood of 5/6 million a year. My guess is that this is similar to the Weis story a few months back. I would expect Pete to re-up and become the highest paid coach in college football. At least that's what I'm hoping.

He should be the highest paid coach in CFB anyway.

I'd say the Lions should make a run at him but he's too much of a players' coach like Mooch was. He might have a better contection with the young players though. He didn't have all that much success as an NFL coach and he's got a great thing at USC...I wouldn't leave if I was him.

ESPN was saying that if the Saints relocated to LA he would be a great hire. Again, not sure, but it has been said before.....the pros are the pros and coaches have egos.

This is the year he would leave, if he's going to, I'd bet.
3 (2.5) straight national titles in 3 seasons. 4 straight BCS victories.
Reggie Bush, alone, has won a couple games a year that the Trojans likely would have otherwise lost. And they lose another Heisman winner along with Lendale White.
Is Herschel Dennis really starting at RB next year?
After getting used to that kind of success, there would be minor grumbling in L.A. if the Trojans even lost only 2 games next year.
If he doesn't go for the NFL dollars this year, then I wouldn't think he would go until L.A. gets a franchise. I think it will be interesting to see what he does.

I'd leave. Take a 3-4 year minimum stint in the pros and get all kinds of mad cash. When he sucks it up in the NFL again, he can go back to college just about anywhere he'll want like Butch Davis. Davis is considered a great hire right now even though his pro stint sucked donkey balls.
Take the $$$ while you can.

While LA is excited this year, they could really care less. Sure they enjoy the success but if the program goes south, they will find more interesting things to worry about like their next boob job.

Let's calculate the originality rating of this post:
Bad Sports Fans in L.A. + Boob Job Joke = 0 on the originality scale.

I could see the Vikings offering a package like that. Tice is likely out depending on how they finish, and most sports talk revolves around who is available.

A nice fit for Carroll would be...gulp...the Raiduhs.
Norv's gone aftere this season and Pete supposedly wants to keep his family in California. That team is starved for a return to a Gruden type and Pete would be the perfect guy to fire up Raider Nation. Only problem there though would be getting Al to give Pete total control over player moves, which will never happen.
Al just needs to hurry up and die.
Another decent spot for Pete would be a return to the Jets, if as expected Edwards leaves. They can only go up from here so Pete could come in and be a bit of a savior there.
The K.C. job though, that's the one with the most upside. If Vermeil leaves Pete would inherit a team and a franchise with the most college like atmosphere in the NFL. Small market, great stadium, great ownership, not a lot of coaching turnover and no peripheral bullshit. Those fans are passionate for a winner and that's a team that's only a little bit more defense away from being very good.
The Vikings gig would be attractive for a number of reasons, primary among them being the simple fact that winning that division will be the easiest task in all of the NFL for the next few years.
Pete would have to fall flat on his face to not surpass what Tice has done with that team over the years. Then again, that division and that conference is so bad right now that Tice might very well end up saving his job by winning a couple more games and maybe one playoff game this season.
Still, Pete's family isn't going to want to move to Minneapolis.
One way or the other I still think that if Pete wins this next game against Texas it's going to be very difficult to resist going out on top and getting out while the getting's at its very best. Leinart's gone, Reggie's probably gone and it would be a lot like when MJ, Scottie and Phil all rode outta town at the same time.
Nice closure to an era that we may never see again.
Leinart's already cost himself a ton of money by not coming out last season as the #1 pick in the draft and if Pete sticks around long enough at USC the whole thing's eventually going to come down around his ears and everything he has going for himself now will be greatly diminished...

I dont think Leinart cost himself too much by coming back. Yeah he was the consensus #1 last year, but he wont go any further than #3 this year. Plus, I doubt he wanted to get his handed to him playing in Frisco this year. Also, the guy will have his degree and more memories from his senior year that cant be bought by any amount of money.
I think Carroll stays for the challenge of proving to people that he can do it w/ a new set of players and a new set of coaches. I think Pete knows how fical the NFL can be and that he would rather be the envy of every college coach in America rather than getting the shit beat out of him on some suspect team.

There's a fairly significant monetary difference between being the #1 pick and, say, the #4 pick.
Also, he's still going to end up being drafted by a team where he'll get his kicked in for awhile...
All in all though, yeah, if I'm Leinart maybe I'm not completely money motivated so getting less than the #1's $$ might not be the biggest determining factor. I actually applaud the guy for sticking around and enjoying his life to the fullest, which he's undoubtedly doing with this continuing magic carpet ride in L.A...
Dude's life may never again be as enjoyable as it's been these last twelve months so what sort of a price tag does one put on that?

Don't see that happening. As you alluded, Pete coached the Jets for one year (in '94) and the team went 6-10 that year. Rumors were that either Pete quit on the team or they quit on him. Can't remember which, but certainly neither is pleasant.
And JetsFan is more likely to remember Pete's previous stint with the Jets than he is to be aware of, or at least impressed by, his more recent successful stint with USC.

Jets Fan doesn't do the hiring and firing.
Pete, Circa 2006, another national title in his pocket, that ain't Pete, Circa 1994.
Bill Belichick was a wash out in Cleveland. He managed okay though in his second NFL head coaching gig.

This is official.
Houston Texans offering 5.78 mil @ yr, plus control of operations....
Trading draft pics to secure 2nd round pic to unite last 2 heisman winners.
I say a ploy to extract max out of Suc....

To Pete? While he's still preparing for the Rose Bowl? And it's official enough to've made it to our ears?
Link???

Huh? Reggie and Leinart, or Leinart and White? I'm sure you must not mean White since I think he's dead or something so you must mean Reggie and Leinart so how is Houston supposed to get either Leinart or Bush with a mere 2nd round pick?
Could you 'splain that one a little more fully, in English this time?
I say a ploy to extract max out of Suc....
A ploy by who? Pete? What, did Pete just up and float this to the media out of the blue recently?
Sounds well beyond fishy. I can't see Pete making himself a distraction like this leading up to the Rose Bowl and I can't see Houston publicly tampering with a still employed high stature head coach...

No, but NYC media and fan is unlike any other. Back in '94, when the Jets fired Pete and brought in, of all people, Rich Kotite, the headline on the back page of one of the NYC tabloids was "Dumb and Dumber." Not entirely fair to Pete, perhaps, but you get the idea of what he'll be up against if he returns to the Jets.
Pete, Circa 2006, another national title in his pocket, that ain't Pete, Circa 1994.
Maybe not, but the coaching landscape is littered with coaches who had significant success at the college level and much less success at the NFL level.
Bill Belichick was a wash out in Cleveland. He managed okay though in his second NFL head coaching gig.
Speaking of Belichick . . .
I seem to recall he had the Jets job if he wanted it when Parcells retired, that Parcells had brought him in as more or less his hand-picked successor. Yet he managed to wrangle the Patriots job instead.
Now, maybe Belichick saw something that the rest of us did not see, that is, an opportunity to win immediately with the Patriots that wasn't quite there with the Jets. I don't doubt that for a minute. But I have to believe that the NYC media/fanbase played a role in his decision as well.

It's even more littered with NFL coaching retreads who never had any major success anywhere, yet who keep getting shuffled around anyway.
Besides, most of those college coaches who fail in the NFL never had any NFL head coaching experience. Pete does, and he wasn't exactly horrible in his first stint. I think Jets Fan would take the results Pete gave 'em vs what they're getting now.
Pete's still a more attractive hire at this point (if he beats Texas) than 90% of the other available candidates. (Assuming Pete actually is an available candidate...)

Yes he did. And it ended up in court with Weis having to testify against Tuna on Belichick's behalf. Led to some strain in Belichick/Weis's relationship with Tuna. Everything has sense been patched up.

Losing your #1
and #2 QB for the season to injuries has a tendency to put any NFL team's season in the tank.

In the abstract, I agree. Just not sure that it applies to the Jets' particular season, given his history with the team.

He was there only two seasons and he took them to the playoffs. For a Jets coach that's not bad at all.

That was with the Patriots. With the Jets, he spent one season, went 6-10 and got fired.
