Obviously one of the best college qb's ever and the first qb to be taken next draft.

Vince Young will not be the first QB taken. Leinart is a better pro than Vince. Vince wont have the luxury of the spread option in the Pros. He has an awesome College QB, but anyone who thinks he will be a better QB than Leinart is on crack.

Can Leinert perform well without Bush, White, and his O Line? We'll see what he does behind the Saints line..

Yeah, I didn't really think about that until last night. Leinart already looks like he moves like a 40 year old veteran. Fuck, he can't even pick up a QB sneak on less than a yard. If he gets stuck behind a weak O line in the NFL, he'll get eaten alive since he can't escape the pocket for shit.

Yeah, and will Vince have the luxury of running the spread option?

Leinart is a great QB but a lot of his success comes from the many other weapons to draw a defense's attention. And I agree 100%, everytime he has to run he looks quite unsure of himself and he can't take a hit. What happens when he gets hit by an NFL LB.................IR.

i know the prototypical college option qb rarely makes it in the big show, but i think vince may break the mold.
1st off, he's a big strong mofo who is gonna get bigger and stronger. most college option qbs were small fast lil' monkeys as old howie would say. they get broke in two by nfl DEs.
2nd, he can throw it. and don't give me any bullshit about poor footwork or mechanics. he is an athletic freak of nature. he doesn't need that shit.
3rd. as he said himself. he has that something that jordan had. he just decides that he is gonna take over, and he does.
as for leinert? he showed in the second half that he is one hell of a qb. so was cryin' leaf. ask me again in 5 years if he'll be good.

Leinert did throw for 345 on Texas' good defensive backfield. And it's not like they trailed the whole game. Also the play selection (run vs. pass) was about dead even.
But, still...Young just has that something the way Michael Jordan did. I'd take Young over Leinert in the draft.
Which genius NBA team chose Sam Perkins (or was it Sam Bowie?) over Michael Jordan in the NBA draft? Fuck conventional football wisdom that tells you to take the prototype QB Leinert. You take the freak....and win championships.

I'd say Leinert is more ready now, Chow developed him well and he should be a good qb at the nexl level. But Young has more upside. There is another level of Young's game that hasn't been achieved yet, and he has the right attitude to achieve that level. Plus he does have that quality we saw in the Mich, OSU, and USC games where he excels in the clutch. Plus plus he could go to a crappy team and not get killed.
It would be nice if Leinert went to Tennessee, he already knows the system and it would give them a qb for the future to take over for McNair. They would probably have to trade-up a bit to get him though.

I got into this argument with a college football friend of mine. His reponse to my assertion that Leinart will struggle without the ability to scramble was simply, "Uh, yeah, look at Dan Marino and John Elway." I'm like...yeah, because the league is just littered with Dan Marinos and John Elways..you know, only two of the greatest, if not the greatest QBs of our generation.
Boy, I showed him.

Well maybe, but I am not overly impressed with his vision or mobility. To a degree he can learn/be taught these things but he looks very unsure of himself when he is under pressure. For that reason, I would take VY (who appears to think he can win in any situation) over ML anyday and every day of the week.

Yeah, cause the ability to scramble worked wonders for Kordell Stewart, Quincy Carter and Akili Smith, right?
Leinart doesn't need to scramble. He just needs to learn how to work the pocket better and that will come with experience.
Pardon me, but I never said "just the ability to scramble" is all a successful QB needs. You really need both and arm and legs to thrive in the NFL (some exceptions included). Defenders are getting stronger and faster every year, and the days of a QB having the luxury of just sitting in the pocket and picking apart a defense are not going to last much longer (again, exceptions included, such as having top notch offensive lines).

It was Sam Bowie, and Portland already had a pretty good 2 guard named Clyde Drexler who had proven himself in the league.
Dirty little secret-every single GM in the NBA would have made that same pick in the same circumstances.
Dirty little secret #2.
Everyone knew that Ralph Sampson and Akeem Olajuwon hated each other, and Portland offered Drexler and their #2 pick to the Rockets for Sampson who had won Rookie of the year. If the Rockets would have taken that trade they could have had Olajuwon, Drexler and Jordan in their primes.
But no the Rockets were in love with the twin towers idea.
Funny how things work out

Yup. Without a doubt.
Still doesn't make it sting any less, all these years later.
Bowie
was an incredibly dominant player...for those 3 games out of 82 he played every year.

Uhhh....Dirty Little Secret #3 --
Dude, that was a hypothetical question posed by someone who wrote into the Sporting News 20 years later...it didn't actually happen.

Ramsay and Glickman may well have laughed if Houston had proposed that trade, much less never offered it themselves.

Oh, and BTW, Vito...did you hear they took the word "gullible" out of the dictionary?

At the time I was in High school and a huge fan of Phi Slamma Jamma. And yes the trade was talked about, alot. Even between the two teams.
Bill Fitch talked about it in his biography. Portland approached Houston with two trades, the 2nd and drexler for the 1st pick, or the 2nd and Drexler for Sampson. For Houston, the trade was considered mainly to bring Drexler back to Houston to play with Olajuwon. Jordan likely would have been traded for a PF, namely Waymon Tisdale.
But again, they brought Olajuwon and Sampson in and both seemed to work things out so end of story. As much as Houston wanted to reunite Phi Slamma Jamma, they were in love with the idea of the twin towers.

Uhm, no.
Like the Zersfans wouldn't have made a beef if they had the chance to trade a second-string rookie who backed up a perrenial all-star for Hakeem.

Who would blazer fan talk to, this was 1984 its not like there was an internet, about the only thing going was Sports talk radio and that was not a 2 way conversation back then. I suppose you and your omnipresent mind was prevey to every water cooler in Portland so as to have the insight into what Blazer fan thought.
It was big news in Texas becasue Drexler was the local hero in Houston and Olajuwon was the reason the Rockets tanked the season.
BTW it was the Blazers who offered the 2nd and Drexler to Houston for the 1st. The Rockets just laughed, hell they had tanked the whole season for the chance to take Akeem. Atlease when they came back and offered the 2nd and Drexler for Sampson, the Rockets were willing to think about it. Like I said, it was short lived, they were in love with the idea of the twin towers and thought it could work. It probably would have if Sampson's knees weren't degenerative. BTW the Bulls offered a huge package for Sampson including the 3rd pick and Orlando Woolridge.
I hate to dissappoint you but back in the 80's I lived for the NBA especially the Rockets and Spurs. If you want we can talk about all the other teams that tried to get Sampson cause there were a lot including the Lakers who offered Worthy. At the time that was the trade I hoped the Rockets would take.

Yeah, your account is obviously true.
That's why the Rockets passed up Drexler in the draft.
