Basically, they are trying to break down songs into its "genome." ie. based on style of bass, vocals etc. I think they have like 400 aspects of music they are breaking things down into.
They have also made a program in which you can make your own radio stations... basically you just add artists to the program, and it will find artists that most closely match the "genome". I have found that it is smarter than programs like Launch.
