Reports: Money differences leave QBs out
ESPN.com news services

When the NFL unveiled its MVPs from the previous 39 Super Bowls, only three living members skipped the ceremony.

Former 49ers quarterback Joe Montana and former Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw decided to stay home, while former Dolphins MVP Jake Scott was traveling in Australia.

Montana, the league's only three-time Super Bowl MVP, turned down the invitation over money, Newsday and the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Bradshaw, who told league officials that he wanted to be with his family, also took issue with the fees, the Chronicle reported. Bradshaw, through a representative, denied the Chronicle's report that there was a dispute over money.

Former MVPs were given $1,000 for incidental expenses while in Detroit, along with other amenities such as plane tickets, car rental and game tickets.

Sources told each paper that Montana asked for a guarantee of at least $100,000 in appearance money.

When the league balked at Montana's demands, the quarterback declined to be in attendance.
:meds:

Class acts, the both of them.

That surprises me cause I think of Montana as being one of the classiest guys to ever play. I was wondering why the only 3 time MVP wasnt there. And I am truly surprised that since it was the Steelers playing that Bradshaw couldnt make it. Guess he couldnt stand someone other than him geting some love in a SB.

That's why they weren't there...I was wondering what was up. Kind of petty of them not to be the only ones to not attend because it was a cool ceremony. I know Bradshaw was in Detroit that week...I saw him on Best Damn.

Who gives a fuck?

The problem with the Super Bowl is all the extra pre game/halftime bullshit after waiting two weeks to see which team will come out flat.

Make the break just 1 week, forget all the hollywood BS, find referee's who aren't collecting Social Security or are members of AARP........and don't make calls up on every play over 20 yards.

Ohhhh, and did Brady really have to toss the coin. What??? No Barry Sanders. At least let him get a sniff at the SB. Did the NFL think the game couldnt go on if Brady wasnt at a SB?

Putting Barry out there would have been cruel. It would have been like showing a blind person a painting. Or playing Beethoven for a deaf person.

Seriously, what kind of crap is that to have a current NFL player who is not neutral toss the coin?

Shouldn't we have had an indpendent person toss the coin? And really, could Brady try to look more shitty next time.

Joe Montana has always been a private person, and since he retired he hasn't spent much time attending NFL games, as he prefers to stay at home with his wife and kids. Joe doesn't crave the limelight like a lot of ex-jocks, but actually seems to shun attention.

I think Joe decided a long time ago that if someone wants to interrupt his normal family routine for him to make a special appearance, he better be paid well as a trade-off. This of course doesn't count the charity work he is involved with, such as his campaign against high blood pressure for which he donates his time and a lot of his money.

Getting a paid invite to the Super Bowl while getting honored for being a great player...yeah, what a horible "interruption" that must have been. It's one thing to turn it down (which would've been acceptable in my book) but to demand 99 grand more than what everyone else received? One of the most classless moves of all time by any athlete.

You mean the same league that says, if you get hurt, you dont get paid?

I wonder how much the NFL made yesterday? Probably not enough to pay the MVP's $100,000.

It's not like the MVP's haven't made some money for the NFL an shit.

Not lately . He has had more airtime in the past 3 years than he has had since retiring . I just think he is finally getting comfortable with the media after retiring .

I don't think his experience as a studio analyst made him comfortable , media wise .

You know, when the horrible calls and horseshit refereeing were very few and far in between.

I mean, dude presided over growth of league from 12 to 28 teams, A merger with AFL, the creation of Super Bowl and advent of huge TV rights fees-and was by far the best commisioner this sport has ever seen.

That shitbag Tags has done nothing more than take a product that he helped bring to America's forefront in any sport category, and fuck it up tremendously.

No matter which way you spin it, Tags is a useless cunt cut from the Bed Selig cloth of commisioning. Fuck that pussy.

He would've gotten a SB ticket, airfare, a rental car and 1k for incidentals...what the fuck did he need the other 99 grand for? Is he a gambling junkie? Is he in dire straits? That's quite possibly the biggest bunch of horeshit you've ever posted.

When Tags took over around 1987 the NFLPA was just coming off a strike year. Replacement players ring a bell much? When Tags took over the NFL was in turmoil, pure and simple. Just because Raider fan has a bulging stiffy over the leagues supposed mistreatment of Alice, doesn't mean you get a free pass to spew such utter garbage.

Why don't you do a little bit of research for yourself James, instead of swallowing every god damned thing that the poptarts' of the world feed you?

Seriously, why don't you go back and look at things like free agency, collective bargaining, the salary cap, TV contract revenue, NFL licensing income, revenue sharing, etc., before Tagliabue came along and straightened that shit out for the better.

Or don't, but to ignorantly bash Tags is, well, ignorant.

Here is the Gem of Montana story:

He was at the superbowl festivities during the week, he left the day before. He pimped some gerital(pain reliever for joints) shit during the week, then took off, making it much worse for him not showing up. Private person or not, he should of got his ass out there for the 10 minutes, and then dart home.

PS Montana was going to toss the coin, he darted, Brady got the gig.

Montana was a class act throughout his career, why would that change now? Ever think that maybe the opportunity cost to miss his kid's high school basketball game or to spend his time doing other activities may exceed the $1000 being offered to him? I'm sure he's been to his fair share of Super Bowls outside the 4 he won. It's not like attending these events is as special for him as it is you or me. What's $1,000 to a retired athlete with millions of dollars in his savings account? Bottom line, the MVPs who wanted to be there took the 1K and went. Those who didn't, didn't. Not a big fucking deal here.

Buncha' idiots giving each other reach arounds, I see.

You have no facts or figures to back up your contentions, just piss poor, useless opinions.

If you don't think that labor/management relations are better now than they were before Tags, you don't know shit.

If you don't think that the salary cap helped the league be more competitive, you don't know shit.

Sure, Rozelle was a great public relations guy and he did much to make the sport popular, but nothing near to what it has become since Tags took over. Pete wasn't near the businessman that Tags is.

Blind squirrels racing around trying to find a nut, I tell ya'.

Answer me this, if Tags sucks so bad and has ruined the game how come 32 NFL owners think otherwise?

You'd think if he were so bad, they'd replace him right?

EAD, ignorant cretins....especially you Joe, dropping in with some dumbass comment that has diddly squat to do with the issue at hand.

How long before the game was he there. It was a 2 week period between the AFCC/NFCC and SB XL. If he left Friday the week before, then that has no relevance to anything. If he left Sunday morning, that's a different story.

he was there, they said on "Mike and Mike"(they talked to him during the week of superbowl), that he pimped some sports joint shit, did some media shit, and left before Sunday.

he also was in a skillz game with Simms and another QB.

Which is why a bunch of people were kinda pissed, if he had time to pimp the ben gay, why not stay, go out on the field, then burn out!

Hey Wagon, time to wake up, fella.

Tags helps the owners make a lot of $green$, and THAT is what they are (for the most part) truly concerned about.

Hell, if you really want to analyze it, you'll turn it completely around from your point and say that only when the owners start bitching about a commish is he truly doing things right for the game, and right for the fans.

The product on the field has deteriorated BIG TIME on Fagliaboo's watch, and THAT is what I'm looking at.

It's entirely packaged, a very large portion of the character and flavor of pro football has been stripped away, and now the integrity of what is taking place on the field is rightfully being questioned.

This post season was a fucking disgrace.
