Art Shell back in Raiders' coach mix
HE MET WITH DAVIS; WHISENHUNT UP NEXTBy Steve CorkranKnight-Ridder
Former Raiders coach Art Shell interviewed with Oakland managing general partner Al Davis late last week regarding the team's coaching vacancy, a person in the front office confirmed Monday.
Shell is the fifth candidate known to have interviewed with the Raiders in person. Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt probably will be the sixth, as he is expected in town today or Wednesday, a person close to Whisenhunt said.
Shell followed former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive-line coach Rod Marinelli, San Diego Chargers wide-receivers coach James Lofton and Raiders quarterbacks coach John Shoop as those receiving face-to-face interviews.
Saunders later accepted a job as the Washington Redskins' offensive coordinator. The Detroit Lions hired Marinelli as coach. Shoop is being courted by Buffalo to be the Bills' offensive coordinator.
Shell's entrance into the mix shines a whole new light on the process. He has yearned for another shot at a coaching job since the Raiders fired him after the 1994 season.
He interviewed with the Raiders, along with New England Patriots Coach Bill Belichick and Tampa Bay Coach Jon Gruden, in 1998 before Davis decided on Gruden.
Shell played for the Raiders in 1968-82 in a career that culminated with his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989.
Shell and Gruden are the only Raiders coaches with winning records since Tom Flores moved to the team's front office after the 1987 season. Shell's teams were 54-38 in regular-season games, a .587 win-loss percentage almost identical to the .594 mark that Gruden's teams (38-26) posted in 1998-2001.
``He had an excellent record with us,'' Davis said of Shell in January 2004, ``and I might have, as I've said many times, made a mistake by acting too soon. There were people behind the scenes who were hurting him. I didn't have the full story.''
Shell met with Davis at the team's headquarters in Alameda. Shell then flew to Detroit, the site of the Super Bowl, and discussed with other team officials the interest level, the person in the front office said.
Shell could not be reached for comment Monday because he was traveling to Florida for a league-related function. He's the NFL's senior vice president of football operations and development and works out of its New York headquarters.
The Raiders had to wait until after the Super Bowl on Sunday, per league rules, before they could contact Whisenhunt. He returned to Pittsburgh on Sunday night and spent Monday there, as well.
Personally I hope Whisenhunt gets the job.
Shell was sucessful as Raider HC back in the 90s. But he has been out of coaching for a long time now, lots of things have changed since he was fired, and I don't think his second stint will be a good one. Oakland needs to move towards the future and go after some new blood. I was impressed with Whisenhunts bold playing calling throughout the playoffs and I think he can give the Raiders a good shot in the arm. He comes from a no nonsense background with Cowher and Co,and thats what the Raiders truly need. We'll see what Al decides.

Maybe Davis is thinking that if he interviews multiple minority candidates that the NFL will get off his ass for once.
Not going to happen.

The only way that id be OK with Shell getting the job is if Martz became our offensive coordinator.
Shell cant discipline these motherfuckers like they need to be-I think wisehunt could because his recent success would make these overpaid underacheiving cunts currently wearing the silver and black take notice and pay attention to someone who just won a super bowl from having players who were disciplined.

I wouldn't be surprised if Art Shell is back coaching in Oakland in some capacity next season.
I don't expect him to be named head coach though.

Even money says Wiz tells Alice to take a hike. He's got stability in his Pittsburgh gig. He doesn't need the Oakland job unless it is on his terms.

One bump in the road for prospective HC's considering Oakland is that they can't choose all the assistants they would like to , since Davis has his choices planted . I heard a story Brian Cox said on Fox Radio that he was at a Raider training camp once , and the coaches were running drills . The coaches were gonna run a few more , until Davis stepped in and told the players " That's enough " ( I think it may have been during the Bugel years ) . I read somewhere that Cowher told Whisenhunt that to stay put in Pitt , alluding to Whisenhunt not having full control in Oakland .
If Whisenhunt doesn't take the Oakland job , he will have plenty of opportunity within the next 2 seasons . Green and Billick are on the hot seats this year , and the teams they coach for could pay better than Davis will .

I heard the same story, actually it was this year and it involved Robert Gallery. Davis went apeshit when they continued the drills and bitched out Jack Colleto for not doing as he ordered. Wouldn't doubt Cox's story, I ve heard of Al basically "conducting" practice.
Listening to sportsbash right now, the guy filling in for Casillias is saying the same as I am. That Shell would not be a good choice for HC.

Yeah, Good job Alvin-how'd that end up working out for the team?
Fucking old idiot.
By doing something that fucking stupid he sets the tone for 2 immediate things to happen: 1. The players disrespecting the coach and not listening to a fucking thing he says, and 2. Robbing someone like Gallery of more skill by cutting his drills short. Yeah, cut Gallery's work time down-that'll leave him better prepared to deal with ferocious D-Lineman come gametime.
Fuck Al. The best thing that could happen to this franchise would be for him to fucking die.
End of story.

Was it Brian Cox you heard that from ? Because he said that happened when he was on a team that was facign Oakland in some exhibiton game that was going to be played overseas ( I think ) making the timeline of where he witnessed that a few years back , from what I gathered .
Whats up with Gallery anyway ? He has been getting some flak in the Bay Area and may have the bust chip on the fans shoulders .

Yeah it was on the Drivetime Radio show he does.
Gallery has been misused IMO. Hes a left tackle, yet they put him at guard, then at RT, and the coaching has been terrible. the entire OL looked shitty last year. Gallery is simply guilt by association, and since he was our first rounder the spotlight is brighter on him. with the right coaching and some quality guys around him,he will be just fine. Hell,it took Walter Jones, and Orlando Pace a couple of seasons to become as good as they are.

Yeah , I think the press and fans are expecting too much from Gallery at this point . Oakland's O-line looks pretty solid for the future , and Treu looks good too , given where he was picked in the draft ( I don't belive it was the first or second round , but I may be wrong . It's like those dumbfuck Niner fans at the Webzone , who thought Smith was the next Montana and lead them into the playoffs , and now are calling him a bust . Overpaid ? YES . A bust . He is only 21 years old .
What's key this year is Turner taking over the offense , which is way less complicated than what McCarthy was trying to install , which confused the whole offense . Turner as an OC shown he can bring a shitty offense into repsectability , plus , bring a good running game into the picture too .
BTW , I'll take Doug Gabriel away from you guys . You don't want him anyway , because he isn't that good .

I'm actually in favor of trading Jerry porter for a draft pick. Keep Gabriel and line him up with moss.

That sounds like an idea , but Davis would want a lot for Porter , and I dunno if Porter's contract would be a prohibitive factor .
