In an interview published in Florida Today, Urban Meyer was extremely critical of the Gator program, but had good things to say about Texas:

FT: The No. 1 recruiting class, do you worry that creates more expectations, whereas realistically, will many of those guys even play this year?

Meyer: Yes (they will), by sheer numbers . . . there are good teams and there are good programs and there are good players. That's the way I look at it. A good program is Texas right now. They are loaded up. Their No. 2 is darn near as good as their No 1 (on the depth chart). There's competition, they are loaded up at each position. I've watched them on film, I've talked to their coaching staff, that's a good program.

There are good teams. Utah was a very good team, played together, very unselfish football. There was very little depth. That's not a good program. That happened to me once in a lifetime, a team came together and won. Florida was neither. We're not a good team, we're certainly not a good program. But we have some good players. We found ways to win.

(Defensive tackle) Marcus Thomas is a good player. Those are three very different evaluations of a program. Everybody ultimately wants a good program. We are so far from that, it's not even funny. The next thing they want is a good team, a group of unselfish people who will lay it on the line for each other. I'd rather have that than good players. I'd rather have a great team, unselfish, love one another, care for each other and make the right decisions because they don't want to let each other down. The worst of the three is good players because you know what, name a team that doesn't have good players on our schedule?

So according to you double negitive, coaches always say their team is good. Well then Urban must really think his team sucks.

Besides, I wasn't talking so much about what he thinks about his team we already knew FU sucked, I was refering to what he said about Texas which is opposite of what you have been saying about Texas. Or did you forget.

In that same article Urban was also quoted as saying:

I tend to agree with this. I sometimes forget that most of this board is not as familiar with Holtz as you and I are.

For those who don't know, "we're not a very good football team" was a standard line for Holtz. You could just about set your watch to it. In fact, if you listened to Holtz' pressers from Navy week during his time at ND, and you took everything he said at face value and that was the extent of what you knew about college football, you would have sworn that Navy was about to put a 63-0 pasting on ND.

Anytime a coach, any coach, goes to the "we're not a very good football team" card, take it with several grains of salt. Usually, there's an ulterior motive behind that comment, and it's not just some incredibly candid revelation to the media.

I can't remember how many times I heard Holtz say they weren't good, or that he was "really worried about that tough Navy team coming next weekend". It's false humility, but it also keeps things diplomatic.

My favorite was in '88, after ND had already beaten the likes of Michigan and Miami, they were playing Rice (I believe) who was so decimated at QB, they were actually starting their strong safety. Before the game; "Rice scares me to death".

For all the history of Notre Dame football, to me the three guys I grew up loving were Lou, Tony Roberts, and Tom Pagna. Nothing against Allen Pinkett but he isn't even in the same conversation as Tom. On top of that are either of you other Irish fans sick of hearing "Well Ton, blah blah blah. His damn name is Tony.......

I will never forget Lou grabbing facemasks of players that outweighed him by 150 pounds and giving them hell. He also does a great job of keeping that idiot Mark May in check. He had a racked quoted every week about MM. Classic.

Not to go Zyclone, but Allen Pinkett was my classmate at ND and a great running back at ND, and if Tom Pagna had to go (rumor I heard was that Roberts wanted him gone), I'm glad Pinkett's getting a chance. Having said that, however, I prefer Pagna as an announcer.

I have mixed emotions on this one. On one hand, Lou brought a swagger, not to mention winning, back to ND in a manner that was sorely missing during my time there ('sup, Gerry Faust). OTOH, his option offense was behind the times by the time he left, and I'm one of those who was of the opinion that Holtz' offense actually did hurt us in the short term following his departure, although the statute of limitations on that one has now long since run out. I also think that Holtz should have lobbied the administration harder for a more worthy successor than Bob Davie (Barry Alvarez was my choice, and he would have taken the job in '96), although in fairness he didn't leave on the very best of terms with the administration. Most importantly, ND got taken to the NCAA woodshed -- something that had never happened before -- due to events that happened primarily on his watch.

I assume you mean the Dunbar situation? While Lou should have done a little more parrenting to Edison, Rossum, Mayes, et. all., The link to her and ND was tenious at best. She was technically a booster because she paid $25 to be a member of and ND club, but she was dating Edison at the time, and later had a child with him. Essentially, it was a girlfriend of a player who flew the other players around on her own money. Granted, it was money that she embezzled, but that wasn't ND's issue.

ND self imposed restrictions on themselves, and went overboard. Not surprising considering it was under Malloy. Funny, getting probation from the NCAA was less embarassing than firing Ty Willingham. Great call, Monk.

Oh, I don't disagree with anything you said. And the rules are, at times, hypocritical, but they are the rules. Nor am I saying that ND had the lack of institutional control that characterizes many of the programs that do end up on probation. But unfortunately, the rules place responsibility on the institution anytime this sort of thing happens. And this sort of thing had never happened at ND before.

Also, IIRC, the Dunbar situation continued even after Holtz left, although the bulk of the incident occurred before he left.
