Al of Arabia
Former Vice President Al Gore told a mainly Saudi audience on Sunday that the U.S. government committed "terrible abuses" against Arabs after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, and that most Americans did not support such treatment.
Gore said Arabs had been "indiscriminately rounded up" and held in "unforgivable" conditions. The former vice president said the Bush administration was playing into al-Qaida's hands by routinely blocking Saudi visa applications.
"The thoughtless way in which visas are now handled, that is a mistake," Gore said during the Jiddah Economic Forum. "The worst thing we can possibly do is to cut off the channels of friendship and mutual understanding between Saudi Arabia and the United States."
Gore told the largely Saudi audience, many of them educated at U.S. universities, that Arabs in the United States had been "indiscriminately rounded up, often on minor charges of overstaying a visa or not having a green card in proper order, and held in conditions that were just unforgivable."
"Unfortunately there have been terrible abuses and it's wrong," Gore said. "I do want you to know that it does not represent the desires or wishes or feelings of the majority of the citizens of my country."

There you go again, without linking. Besides, AP is lucky if "they" get only half of it right. At least according to our No. 1 news source here, Cuda. :wink:Diogenes wrote:Actually the entire part quoted is from AP.
Well, if you point was to illustrate what a complete idiot Gore was in a speech, as a response to the VP shooting someone (albeit accidentally) ... not a good analogy. Just sayin'Diogenes wrote:As far as it being two days old, I didn't want to distract the nutjobs here obsessing about a freaking hunting accident.

You don't think the fact that this guy is trashing the U.S. in Wahabbi central (and is echoing what a sizable part of his party believes), for pay, of course, is newsworthy?
Especially since he's a probable candidate for his party's nomination in '08?
Or the fact that it is being treated as a nonstory by so much of the 'mainstream' media?
That is the point, how much 24/7 crap do we really need to hear about Elmer Fuddgate while ignoring shit like this.
Gotta rack the wisdom of the founding fathers for giving us an electoral college once again.

Maybe because tools like you overdramatize part of what he said, and totally ignore what you can't complain about, like this:Or the fact that it is being treated as a nonstory by so much of the 'mainstream' media?
On Iran, Gore complained of "endemic hyper-corruption" among Tehran's religious and political elite and asked Arabs to take a stand against Iran's nuclear program.
Iran says its program is for peaceful purposes but the United States and other Western countries suspect Tehran is trying to develop nuclear weapons.
"Is it only for the West to say this is dangerous?" Gore asked. "We should have more people in this region saying this is dangerous."
Several audience members criticized the United States for what they described as "unconditional" U.S. support for
Israel, saying U.S. diplomats helped Israel flout U.N. resolutions that they enforced when the measures targeted Arabs.
Gore refused to be drawn into questions about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
"We can't solve that long conflict in exchanges here," Gore said.
If this were a dictatorship, it'd be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator." —GWB Washington, D.C., Dec. 19, 2000

True. Iran is important. Very important. And it's the broadcast media, btw.Diogenes wrote:Or the fact that it is being treated as a nonstory by so much of the 'mainstream' media?

But how does denigrating a nutjob speech or rehashing recent history translate into a positive anything?
You know that I can't stand the Bush-bashers. Or the GOP bashers. Or any bashers, for that matter, just for the sake of bashing.
Constructive criticism, bro. That's all. You are as bad as the Dems in the sense that everything Demo outside of Zell Miller is evil to you. You do the exact same shit as those who you oppose on this board, and no need to. Each party has plenty of its own would-be Netboy Reids. Just sayin'.

When the nutjob in question is considered a serious candidate for his party's nomination, it is news.
And again, contrast the coverage of this with the bullshit 'scandals' created by media hacks and partisan swine.

Not true.
I'm cool with Joe Lieberman.
And I'll consider voting for any Dem who promises to cross party lines tovote for Hastert as House speaker, Whoever replaces Frist as Majority leader in the senate, etc.
But Trafficant's in the slammer, so don't hold your breath there.
And unlike the leftists, who couldn't admit Bush was right about anything to save their lives, I'll speak up when I see the GOP or the President in the wrong.
By the way, as to your slam on the link in the first post...
Why do you hate Mikey?

I'm not so sure it's so much partisan as much as it is history. As the world gets smaller, the microscope gets bigger, on the international, national, state and local level. It just so happens though, that the VP shot someone. Sucks for him, but one would imagine that he'd take a second before firing, especially since he's out hunting birds, as opposed to terrorists.Diogenes wrote:When the nutjob in question is considered a serious candidate for his party's nomination, it is news.

Not my point.
It is the total ignoring of the Gore speach, and the predictable hysterical overkill by the media on the Cheney thing that made for an interesting contrast.

I'd like to know why Al went to Saudi Arabia to talk about poor treatment of folks after 9/11. Didn't he consult with Michael Moore and all the conspiracy theorists who believe that Saudis were given preferential treatment and escorted out of the US by the Bush government?
And what about all the folks on Al's side who believe that the Saudis and Bush have been in bed for a long time to screw the folks in this country with high oil prices?
Can't have it both ways. It's simply not believable, much like anything else Mr. Gore has done.
