Except that it won't happen and the IU alumni don't want Alford. Other than that, exactly the same.

I thought Thad Matta was who IU wanted?

Killian,
I'll bet you a thousand bucks, Indiana's first choice will be Alford.

K? We cool man? Don't go to Indiana. Please.
Oklahoma fan fears that threat of mediocrity looming with their treatment of Kelvin eh?
Don't want the Bliss, Parrack, Macleod, Owens era to return?

Let me get this straight. You literally want to bet me one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) that Steve Alford will be Indiana's first choice?
While I would love to take this bet, there is no way to prove if Alford is or is not their first choice.
Case in point, I would bet the IU BoT would love to hire Roy Williams, Thad Matta, or another high profile coach with more experience and success. Will they get either of those two? Highly doubtful. Would they take either of them above Alford? You bet. But Alford has a much better chance of being interviewed and actually receiving a job offer.
So your wager is flawed. That having been said, I would bet that Alford gets a cursory interview and IU will move on to a better canidate. While Alford may be their first interview and in the end could possibly end up being the IU head coach, he is far from their first choice.

No Killian, I didn't mean that literally! And you're right, but I think the clear cut REALISTIC favorite will be Alford.
Mace,
I disagree about Alford leaving not being a bad thing. I think he is becoming a very good coach. And I think he'll start to cash in with recruits on this season. His staff has outcoached a lot of very good coaches this year. I think the future is very bright for Iowa basketball. But I'm not that confident we'll bring in a good coach if he leaves. And, if Alford leaves, we're not going to get Tyler Smith and we really need him. And I would not be surprised to see Tony Freeman go with him, and that would be an enormous blow to this team. I know Greg McDermott would be the leading candidate, and he's a solid coach, but how is he going to recruit outside of Iowa/Minnesota area? He doesn't have any ties to anywhere else. He'd be Tom Davis all over again, and I never cared for Dr. Tom outside of being a great person. He was one of the most overrated coaches I have ever seen at any level of any sport.

Jon - as you pointed out, three of the All Time Big 12 team came from Iowa........why would he need to recruit anywhere else?

National player of the year(?) in David West.
Absolutely owned his crosstown rival year after year. How does Alford do against in-state schools?
Xavier always exceeded expectations under Matta. Alford has done that precisely once, with a senior-laden SMS team that had a favorable draw in the '99 NCAAs (beating the Cro-Magnon Dick Bennett Badgers and an overrated Tennessee team), en route to a Sweet 16.
Oh, and he can recruit a little, too....

First off, Alford has exactly ONE win in NCAA play in his 6 prior years at Iowa. Since you're clearly slow that equals ZERO Sweet 16 trips.
As for Matta, I guess winning 20+ games EVERY year he's been a head coach, an overall winning % over 75 and the ability to recruit like a mofo are credentials a school would want to shy away from.
As for IU, sorry noJ but Alford is simply the easy button for the media to push on this story. A poll on the IU site for who they wanted as the next coach saw Matta with an overwhelming majority of the votes, and Stevie boy in a neck and neck battle with Mike Montgomery for second.
L45B nailed it though, that shipped has sailed. Had the IU admin fired Davis last year like they should the story would be vastly different. Only caveat is the highly unlikely scenario that the NCAA hits tO$U hard with sanctions.

Actually, Shine, Alford led Southwest Mizzou St to the Sweet 16 before taking over the Iowa job.
