Need your help

OK, so I am farely new to this portion of T1B but I wanted to put this out there. I have listened to WOXY.com for over 6 yrs now. They used to be a teresstrial station but then went internet only about 2 years ago. This has brought numerous funding issues and they are finally without options. Anyway, here is a good write up from a different user:
Two weeks ago, the best radio station I've ever heard announced that if it cannot find enough subscribers by March 6, it might shut down forever.

WOXY.com is an independent, Internet-based station that plays modern rock like ‘60s FM radio used to play modern rock—like MTV in the ‘80s used to play modern rock. In short, its disc jockeys (not computers) spend every day bursting the boomer-promoted myth that music today doesn’t hold a candle to the “good old days.” I’d hazard a guess that it introduces more new artists in two hours than MTV does in a week (or, would, if it still showed music videos).

But despite offering an exceptional service, WOXY is scrambling for survival, thanks to bandwidth costs and licensing fees. Incredibly, whereas major record labels will go so far as bribe music directors to play their music on terrestrial radio (you’ll see a Sony logo next to payola in the dictionary), they actually charge Internet radio stations to play their music.

Folks, there’s a war on for the very heart of our culture. And you and I are losing—because most people are too distracted, or resigned, or ignorant, or apathetic; or, worst of all, too content with letting someone else call the shots for them.
I have a hard time telling/asking anyone to go spend $10 bucks on something because I believe in it, so I won't. But go check the station out. They have a free low-bandwith feed and then, if you like pich in to keep something great alive.

Thanks, I am off my soapbox now.

I've never listened to WOXY, but I've heard good things. It would be sad to see them go. I try to give as much as I can to my local community station because I know how valuable it is. Hopefully WOXY has enough people who feel the same about them.

The best radio station I have is my iTunes player on shuffle. Over 8700 songs and counting. Everything from the Carpenters and Alisons Krauss to Hawkwind to Led Zeppelin to Mars Volta to Johnny Cash to Frank Zappa and a whole buch of other shit that may or may not ever get any airtime on any radio stations.

I appreciate that but there is something more to this station. It isn't just any "regular" indie or alternative web station, it a dynamic feed through which artists and listeners can interact. (that sounds like a load of crap I know) Check this out: Explaining Why

Shit man, you are right in line. That is the stuff they play there--and for every artist you know and love, you will get turned out to two more. Just listen for a week or so and let me know what you think.

I have plenty of sources to turn me on to new artists. Sorry, but I won't even pay to listen to Jim Rome, I'm not going to pay to listen to music I already have.

Nope. Don't listen to the radio for music. I discover new music by downloading (free) samples based on recommendations from friends, reviews from sources I trust, etc.

EXACTLY. And from reading music reviews on Pitchforkmedia.com and in music magazines. And from message boards. 'N lotsa other places.

The only radio I've listened to in the past 5 years is NPR while I'm gettin' ready for work.

Oh, sorry...I meant to say...

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

Nothing says "I'm a neophyte wannabe" like reading Pitchfork.

Have they hired a reviewer that isn't tone-deaf yet? I doubt it.

I think we've established that pay for play Internet radio is a complete non-starter. The only way one can get away with pay for play on the internet is to have a show that is already successful and then offer a pay service as a premium online. Like Limbaugh or Jim Rome.

Sorry Sky, but if your radio station is depending on subscribers, they might just as well save everybody a lot of time and money and shut down now.

If reading Pitchfork is beneath you, how do you know how qualified their reviewers are? (Not that I disagree with you. These days I only check the site for news.)

Back on topic, I agree that they're fighting a hopeless cause. I love my station, but I don't know how long it'll survive when it's only a matter of time before it'll be possible to access an almost infinite selection of music where ever you go. Even now, you can use services like Orb to stream your entire hard drive full of music and video to a web-enabled phone. How can any station compete with such freedom of choice?

I've heard enough of Garth Brooks to know he fucking sucks, too.

Some things are unavoidable.

Fair enough?

I gotcha. I just hope you stopped reading in time to avoid becoming one of those neophyte wannabe's you mention. That would be tragic.

It's all about the intent, Don.

And my intent is puritanical. I've only perused it to bolster my over the top superiority complex.

Fair enough?
