Gary Williams talks tough. Soon, we'll find out if he is tough.

Williams, Maryland's wonderful if occasionally condescending coach, suggested to the Washington Post on Sunday that teams from the Missouri Valley Conference -- whose hopes for a record five NCAA Tournament bids would come at the expense of larger leagues -- have been ducking schools like Maryland.

"They haven't been banging down anyone's door in the ACC to play," Williams told the Post. "The phone works both ways, last time I checked."

Yes, it does. And sources in the Valley tell me that by the end of this week, Williams will have received calls -- and offers to play a home-and-home series beginning next season -- from every team in the Missouri Valley.

Don't you love that?

Missouri State coach Barry Hinson was so excited by Williams' apparent offer that he had his scheduling director call the Maryland basketball offices first thing Monday morning to schedule a home-and-home series with the Terps beginning next season. And Missouri State is willing to play the first game on the road, even if that means bailing out on a money-making home game already on the schedule for next season.

By 3 p.m., when Maryland hadn't returned the call, Hinson called Maryland himself and left the same message. As of this morning, Williams hadn't returned Hinson's call. He also hasn't yet returned a message left this morning by CBS SportsLine.com to discuss the issue further.

In Williams' defense, he's preparing for this little thing called the ACC tournament. He has a lot on his mind.

But if he's going to talk tough when the Washington Post calls, he better be prepared to back it up when Missouri State and Northern Iowa call.

Williams shouldn't have ran his mouth if that were the case. You can't lay down the Guantlet like that then duck and run. Better step up to the mic on atleast one or two of those home and home offers or he loses all credibility in my eyes.

He's just pissed b/c second rate conferences get all this pub this time of year, and leave out deserving schools from bigger conf. He shoudnt have hid, but you cant tell me that the MVC is better than ACC or any other major conference.

MVC deserves atleast 4 teams. (SIU,Bradley,Wichita State,Northern Iowa,) with Creighton fighting for last spot.

ACC,Big12,SEC,Pac10 are all down, and don't deserve a huge amount of bids. Shit teams shouldn't get in.

Because you can bend over and take it in the ass from Duke and NC, doesn't mean you should be in the tourney.

Depends how you measure "quality wins". I'd say they have ONE, with a win over Arkansas who will be in the tournament. I always felt a win over a major conference team that is tourney bound is considered a "quality win".

I wouldn't call him a bitch just yet. I'll give him a pass on not responding yet since he is in the middle of the ACCT and trying to get into the big dance. If a time comes down the line where he doesn't respond THEN I'll call him a bitch. He may very well step to the plate and schedule a bunch of MVC games.

Maryland is the fourth best school in it's own metropolitan area. GT, GW, and George Mason are all better than that shit squad in College Park.

Williams is lucky he can live off the NC from 2002.

Got damn lucky that season as well that OU had its worst perfomance, shooting wise, of the entire season and still barely lost to Indiana in the Final Four. We had already ran that Maryland team totally off the court earlier in December of that year. There is no doubt in my mind who would have won that national title match up if not for our slip against IU. :(

I drove ten hours from DC to Atlanta to watch that boolshit live - the only FF i've seen in person. I remember some lanky kid from Indiana who absoulutely PWND in that game? Newton? I've pretty much tried to block that night out the way Chris Wilcox was blocking Drew Gooden's shit from the opening tip.
