Arizona is trying to be competitve???

Cards agree to deal with free-agent RB JamesESPN.com news services

The Cardinals made a big splash in the free-agent market Sunday, agreeing in principle to a contract with running back Edgerrin James, a source close to the team told ESPN.com.

James

James' deal is for four years, the Arizona Republic reported, although financial terms were not immediately available.

The Colts, who believed they had a "50-50" chance of retaining the two-time rushing champion, were faced with salary-cap restrictions.

Along with league MVP Shaun Alexander, who re-signed with the Seahawks, and Jamal Lewis, who helped lead Baltimore to a Super Bowl title, James was one of the top running backs on the market.

Colts president Bill Polian could have kept James by using the franchise tag on him for the second straight year after receiver Reggie Wayne agreed to a new six-year, $39 million contract. The Colts also signed defensive lineman Raheem Brock to a five-year deal Friday.

Instead, Polian decided against using the tag, which would have increased James' salary next season to more than $10 million.

In recent months, James said he believed his tenure in Indianapolis was over. At the Super Bowl, he said he hoped to play for a team that wanted him.

James holds Colts franchise records for attempts (2,188), yards (9,226) and touchdowns (64). Indianapolis has reached the playoffs six times in James' seven seasons, missing the postseason in 2001 when James sat out the final 10 games after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Good move by the Cards. James is money.

They're the Cardinals. They'll still find a way to suck.

Edgerin's fantasy football value just took a nose dive.

You just can't let guys like that go. Running backs are replaceable but Edge was one of those great all-purpose backs...not many of those guys out there right now. Great move by the Cardinals...still need a real QB though.

The Colts are idiots. You keep Manning and yet you jettison Edge.

Dumbfucks.

From three days ago......

We could easily draft a back and he doesn't beat J.J. out. That could easily happen."

The Colts are looking at Rhoades for this year and picking up someone through the draft. Rhoades is a 1,000 yard rusher- but I think Indy really made a mistake. With the new CBA they had the money- but James' ego didn't like being marked as the 3rd priority- so there was no chance he was coming back to Indy regardless.

If James' ego was that insulted, the Colts made the right decision to send him on his way. They still have Rhodes and James Mungro is a solid short yardage back who's legs are still fresh. I'd look for them to draft a 3rd back and continue to choke divisional round playoff games.

No, they aren't. Running backs are a dime a dozen.

Enjoy the rest of your "career", Edge. Nobody will notice.
Edge was an all-purpose back, not just a runner.

You might be right though, the Colts won't suffer. Manning will still keep audibling to pass plays anyway. With that loser at QB, they're guaranteed not to win a big game, much like our Plummer situation.
