Rules for being a Duke fan

by WhatsMyName
1. You must have graduated the university; or
2. You must have a very close family member (mostly nuclear family, maybe a close grandfather or uncle on rare occassions) who graduated the university and is a big sports fan; or
3. You must have grown up in a household as an impressionable youth that was always exposed to Duke sports; or
4. You must have grown up in North Carolina.
I might have missed a few, but if you can't claim to experiencing any of the 4 aforementioned rules above, there's a 99.99999999999% chance you're a front-running pseudo-fan that deserves to have his pussy-ass beaten by real, actual fans.

I was told I was conceived in North Carolina while my parents were on a vacation through the Carolinas and Virginia...do I get a pass? Too much information, I know...I'm good at that.

Did the brother of your mom's boyfriend tell you that?
Sorry, I couldn't resist.

This should get interesting ... rozy, your thoughts?
Btw, here are the rules for being a Duke hater:
1. You must have graduated the University of North Carolina or Kansas; or
2. You must have a very close family member (mostly nuclear family, maybe a close grandfather or uncle on rare occassions) who graduated the University of North Carolina or Kansas and is a big sports fan; or
3. You must have grown up in a household as an impressionable youth that was always exposed to UNC or KU sports; or
4. You must have grown up in North Carolina or Kansas or spent any meaningful time in Lawrence whatsoever.
5. Because of the refs, and Jim Nance, Mike Patrick and Dick Vital.
Given that much of the country will go with 5., ... T1B, your thoughts?
P.S.
Cicero inevitably will wrote:I'll have to go with Duke. They have a much longer tradition in domination of college basketball.
Save it, fucking tard.

I guess you were referring to me. Since I was little my dad followed Coach K b/c of his ties to Army. The first CBB game I watched was when Duke got their ass handed to them by UNLV.
Beat my ass? Doubt it. Actually its impossible.

Why exactly should KansasFan in particular hate Duke?

Aside from '86 and '91 and '98(?), losses of KU in the semis or national championship or other games which KU should have won :x, of which tards like Sissy may or not remember, there are a TON of connections between KU and UNC.
Just off the top of my head:
-- Dean Smith played at KU.
-- Dick Harp played at KU.
-- Larry Brown was an assistant at UNC, before leading KU to a national title.
-- Wilt Chamberlain played in perhaps what is the most little-known greatest college baskeball game in history, for Kansas, in a triple OT thriller, for the national championship, against UNC.
-- And of course, Roy, an assistant under Dean ... etc.
Having lived in Lawrence for 10 years ('89-99), and knowing that James Naismith -- the fucking
inventor of basketball, was KU's first coach, it's pretty safe in saying that KU Fan is pretty knowlegable about basketball, and nearly all of them fucking HATE duke. I have no doubt UNC fan cheers for KU over every other likewise favorite.
Hope that helps.

OK...I was wondering if had to do with the strong connections between Kansas and UNC. I see that it is the case...thanks!

I'm about to blow your theory to hell in a handbasket, sort of.
I hate both Duke
and UNC. The incessant media fellating of
both programs does it for me, not to mention the Tournament Selection Committee's seeming insistence upon giving at least one, if not both, of these schools a
de facto home court advantage for the first two rounds of the tournament
every fuggin' year.
But I don't hate either school's football team. Their football teams aren't good enough to hate.
Wanna know what's really ironic? I actually like both Coach K and Williams. I read Coach K's book. I agreed with a lot of what he had to say, and I never knew how much he had done for Valvano when Jimmy V was undergoing cancer treatment. And I was a fan of Williams from his days at Kansas. I'd probably be a big fan of either of these guys if they were associated with a different program. But what I mentioned at the outset overrides the rest.

Coupla points:
1. No way you could enforce it.
2. Many people would be fans of no team. Don't know what it's like where you are, but around here, most people who are college graduates are graduates of schools with DIII athletics.

How are either of those things their fault? ESPN is probably the most guilty party in why the hatred for Duke has grown. My whole problem with the sports media today is that they try to tell us what is good and bad instead of just reporting the news. Duke is looked at with such high regard but they cram them down everyone's throats when not everyone is a fan. Same can be said for the Red Sox/Yankees in baseball, Patriots in football, and Lakers/Knicks in basketball. You can't help but get sick of any team ESPN parades out there and devotes hours of coverage to. They're front-runners...imagine if ESPN was around during the days of the John Wooden UCLA teams or the great Celtics teams? If you take away the media hype...do you think people would hate some of these teams with the same amount of passion? I think a lot of the dislike is just through spite...people don't want to be told who they are supposed to like and why.

One rule I'd like to see for all college sports fan: you must root for teams that represent the same school.
Posted: Thu Mar 16, 2006 6:16 pm
by Cicero
Its not like I dont root for FSU, just since their season is done all my allegiance goes to the team I rooted for before I ever considered going to FSU.

Actually, FSU's season isn't over -- not before tonight, in any event.
Btw, weren't you the one who said you were "rooting neutral" during the FSU-Duke game?

Rules for being a Duke-hater:
1)Realize that the third-best team in the ACC is a better team than the scrubs who won your conferance. Again.
2) Realize Duke Fans laugh at you.
3) Realize Coach K is permenantly embedded in your dome.
4) Realize Duke Fans don't give a fuck about any 'rules' outlining prerequisites to root for them.
5) Fuck off.

Maybe because he is in every other fucking commercial during the tournament not to mention during the whole regular season.

As opposed to whoever the fuck is coaching <insert your scrub team>OU</insert your scrub team> this year, who wouldn't be recognized outside of <insert wherever your scrub team plays at>Oklahoma</insert wherever your scrub team plays at>.
Besides, John Wooden is busy.

Look, I can't even flip through a non sports mag without seeing that rat faced fuck Coach K, so "Realize Coach K is permenantly embedded in your dome." has less to do with my hate and more to do with getting sick of seeing a school gain an unfair advantage in recruiting due to over exposure.
Duke is a great program, I have no problem with them being on ESPN all the time.
Duke is a great program, I don't see a reason why they need an unfair advantage to recruit.
Even with all the hype Duke still has one title in 12 years, 3 other teams have had two in that same time. I would argue that over the past decade that UCONN has probably been the best program, yet I don't see Jim Calhoun's face plastered everywhere.
Duke is a bunch of cry babies, nobody likes you and you can't understand why. So I get a bunch of whiney stories about how great Reddick really is and what a fantastic guy Coach K is.
Seeing coach K makes me want to vomit about as much as me picking his team to get to the final game.
UCONN 77 Duke 76

Considering that I'm a Big East fan . . .
We'll see how Duke fares against UConn when the time comes. Assuming Duke makes it that far, that is.
