Anyone catch Sportscenter last night, evidently they had some major technical problems last night and they got so bad they had to switch to ESPN News. Well ESPN news was also having technical problems and one of their anchors dropped an F-bomb Live. Here is a link

Ha, I never said I watched Sports Center fact is I avoid it like a disease. I got my fill of them when they were USCPN. I found a thread on another board followed the link to the segment and thought it had just happened.

No I get all my sports news from the internet and your right outside of college football and NBA basketball I no longer follow sports for shit.

I have better things to do with my time.

Like fight midgets or something.
I've been a Spurs fan since my dad took me to my first game back in 74 to watch them play the St Louis Spirits. I've followed them when Gervin was there and then in the ugly years of the 80's and the Robinson years of the 90's. No way I would stop watching them when they are the class of the NBA.

I used to feel the same way about the NFL when the Oilers were in Houston but they left Houston and I have not watched the NFL since. Fact is I don't miss it one bit.

the league has kicked out the thug element, about all that is left is Artest. Teams are no longer putting up with that crap. Just another reason I am still a Spurs fan. SA has never had that that thug element.

That's a rather forgiving perspective. I'll have to bow to you on it, though - I haven't really watched an NBA game for a few years.

They're treading pretty close with Iverson, which sucks 'cause he's a DAMN fine ballplayer. I wouldn't mind seeing Marbury play in traffic though.

Spreewell is gone
Rodman is gone, but I would not consider him part of the thug mentality group.
Glenn Robinson gone
The guy from UNLV.

Most of the so-called thugs have gotten old, Webber, Iverson, Van Exel, Jason Williams, ect. Like I said the only guy right now I would consider a thug is Ron Artest.

I think the biggest reason for the NBA moving away from the thugs is the huge influx of foreign players who are very sound fundamentally and are willing to do the dirty work. Guys like Manu, Dirk, Ak-47, Parker are taking their game to the next level with the elite American players.

Kobe is still playing for the Rapers, Spreewell is still around isnt he?
Carmello Anthony is in a video where his "homies" are talking about killing anyone who cooperates with the Police
and its not like Artest was the only one involved in that fight in Detroit.
Basketball appeals to the lowest common denominator, its played by garbage and watchd by garbage. Just because you force a rapist to wear a suit doesnt mean he is less of a pile of shit, my children will not grow up watching a sport that puts filth like these NBA players on pedestals

I am disgusted w/ the state of the NBA, but I must disagree w/ a couple things here. Kobe isnt a thug. Yeah, he is a selfish, arrogant ball hog but committing adultery doesnt make you a thug. Kobe isnt beating people up and getting arrested on weapons charges.

Sprewell is out of the league. No one thought he was worth the trouble this year. I think he will find a team to take a chance on him next year though.

Artest and Stephen Jackson are the two biggest pieces of shit.

dumbest post of the year.

Wasn't there a WR who had his girlfriend murdered? Do you still watch the NFL?

NBA guys have nothing on some of the things that NFL players have done. I won't defend Kobe because I frankly don't know what happened to him in Colorado but he has never taken on a thug mentality.

The NBA has a lot of really good people, Tim Duncan, Dirk Newitski, Grant Hill, Lebron James, Ben Wallace, Michael Finley, Bruce Bowen, Shaq, and many many more.

I could go on for days on what David Robinson is and has done for the city of San Antonio. If he were catholic he would be canonized.

I shouldn't be surprised by this kind of statement coming from you, I get the feeling you probably took a wrong turn around the USC campus and the results have made you a bitter person. the scary thing to me is the thought that you have children.

Shit trix If I were to write a book about NFL outlaws or about College football outlaws it would probably be in a multi-volume set. Do I need to remind you of the Dallas Cowboys of the 90's or the Miami Hurricans or Nebraska or Oklahoma in the late 80's. Hell every school has their dirty little secrets same with every pro football team.

Do I need to bring up OJ hell I already brought up the guy from Colorado that had his girlfriend killed, who in the NBA comes even close to these guys. I guess we can point to Jayson Williams but his was an accident while the former two were cold blooded killers.

I swear trix the longer you are on this board the more bitter you become.

accident? He shoots dude with a shotgun and then waits a few hours to make sure hes dead to call the police and tried to make it look like it was an accident.
How many college football coaches tried to help one of their players hide and cover up a murder of a team mate over drug payments?
You want to point out that another sport with roughly 8 times the amount of players has close to as many run ins with the law, thats your arguement I guess. Id rather my kids watch Hockey where I dont have to worry about their favorite players raping teenagers, having 18 kids with 12 different moms, murdering chaufers or making rap videos about killing informants and homosexuals, I'll play the percentages, and youre a fuckin idiot if you think it has anything to do with race

I have had this conversation before and it wasn't close. FORTY PERECNT of NBA players have a criminal record. FORTY PERCENT!!!!!!!!!

Compare that to 21% for the NFL.

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!

trix's Link wrote:Okay, I admit it. Basketball is not my sport. Watching players run back and forth across a gym in baggy clothes and squeaky shoes makes my eyes glaze over. There are many things I don’t understand about round ball. Like why is the ability to jump and run and wheel considered talents in world where we have trains and planes and automobiles? Why would a game so strategically simple be attractive to such vast audiences? Mostly, I don’t get why bouncing a ball makes a tall guy with a bad attitude a role model. Jeff Benedict’s book about the permissive culture of college and professional basketball adds to my incredulity.

Out of Bounds is a sad tale about the criminal activities of professional basketball players. Given the flurry of famous sports figures facing criminal charges over the last few years, Benedict’s book both exploits the situation and explains it. The book is well-researched -- a thick section of notes and a bibliography document the facts if one cares to check them out. Although I am skeptical about some of his statistics, the author is upfront about his techniques, and the reader can accept their validity or not. Regardless of my quibbling about numbers, the results don’t significantly alter the magnitude of the problem.

Benedict doesn’t go into cases that are currently playing out in the courts such as Jayson Williams and Kobe Bryant. What he does do is present a long list of other NBA players who have had brushes with the law, from minor drug offenses to assault to rape to murder. Although these misdeeds are of a personal nature, they reflect the priorities of an industry fueled by arrogance, testosterone and money.

The problems lie in the industry’s enormous financial investment in players who may not be able to handle the sudden fame and fortune bestowed upon them. In the final analysis, basketball is entertainment. Teams make money when their stars play. Therefore, management does what is necessary to ensure that they do play -- even to the point of excusing or even encouraging crude, immoral and self-destructive behavior.

This creates a culture of irresponsibility and entitlement. Many of these young men used college as an excuse to play sports and never really got the education their facility for the game might have provided. Unable to deal with their personal business effectively, they rely on lawyers, wives and business managers to handle money matters. They live in a extended permissive childhood where anything they want is theirs for the taking. Worshiped by fans and enabled by management, they erupt into rages when thwarted leading to spousal abuse, sexual assault and other forms of violence. Victims of these crimes are loath to file charges fearing that well-paid lawyers will drag them through embarrassing and emotionally draining inquisitions into their private lives. Fans refuse to believe that their on-court heroes are guilty, often accusing victims of being gold diggers.

Out of Bounds chronicles many of these cases. It’s a disheartening and sad book even if you like basketball. In fact, Benedict offers few answers to the situation -- perhaps he feels outing the problem will solve it.
Nope...no 40% talk in there...

I agree the league is full of thugs. I've stated that myself. However, the statistics you mentioned are what is in question.

Everyone here has questioned the 40% you claimed. Even the link you used as proof, which was a review of the book, said the statistics in the book are questionable.
