Texas had its pro day today and from the reports I have seen Vince did not disappoint. Vince was working with David Thomas, Brian Carter and Ahmard Hall. He threw 57 passes completing 55 of them. All passes were done while lining up under center. Together there were 30 teams represented with over 150 coaches and scouts on had. Vince's best 40 time was 4.49 his worst was 4.57. According to Gil Brandt any question about Vince's ability to throw the ball were answered today.

A large portion of the Pro Day was spent in the classroom where Vince was grilled by several coaches on formations and sceniros. According to reports he may now surpass Leinart as the top QB in the draft.

Mortensen wasn't even there he's based all his erroneous comments on someone else's source. Mort also said he thinks the QB from Arkansas (Jones) is better, but people fail to remember that his son was a Arkansas QB so I don't put too much stalk in what Mort thinks.

BTW can anyone remember a single time someone ran Vince down from the back. And Mort is wrong Texas has a slow track not a fast one, I don't know of a single indoor track that is considered a fast track.

BTW according to other scouts Vince did every pass on the tree.

I find it funny that Mort is the only guy I can find that thinks Vince didn't have a good workout. Here is what a few others have to say:

Sean Salsbury: Said he, along with all scouts there, was blown away by Vince today. Said he may even take him over Leinhart now and that if he isn't top 5, then teams are flat out stupid.

On Fox Sports SW report: John Rhadigan interview John McClain about Vince's workout. McClain told Rhadigan that Vince put on quite a show and that many of the scouts/gm's said it was one of the best individual performances that some of them had seen in quite a while.

McClain also indicated that at one point in the workout Vince threw a deep ball while rolling to his left and some of the "experts" he talked to said that it was the kind of throw that only Brett Favre or John Elway could have made.

Gil Brandt - The main event started at 3:15 p.m. -- Young throwing. He started off 7 out of 7. In all, he had a 40-minute workout in which he threw from under center as opposed to out of the shotgun. It gave team personnel an opportunity to evaluate him that way since he worked out of the shotgun predominantly at Texas. He impressed everyone with his arm strength, quick delivery and accuracy. Young made great strides today.
Young puts on first workout for NFL scouts

Texas quarterback Vince Young heads toward a test for scouts and general managers at a workout Wednesday, March 22, 2006, in Austin, Texas. He is attempting to prove he's worth taking as one of the first picks in next month's NFL draft.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Vince Young threw sideline passes, deep routes and across the middle. Some were touch passes, others he fired as hard as he could.

Almost all were on target.

The former Texas quarterback worked out for 30 minutes Wednesday in front of more than 100 NFL scouts, coaches and executives who are paying close attention to the quirky throwing motion that still raises questions despite delivering a national championship.

"Very impressed," said new Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak, whose team owns the No. 1 pick. "The kid put on a show."

It was a long time coming.

Young declared for the draft four days after leading Texas to a Rose Bowl victory over Southern California. Since then, he has cashed in on paid autograph sessions, been the guest of honor at a Houston parade and fought back rumors and reports that he bombed an intelligence test at the NFL combine, where he didn't take part in any drills.

"You hear so much 'Vince not working out, Vince not doing this,"' Young said. "I wanted to go out here and show them I had been working. That was the biggest key. I feel like I did a good job."

Texas officials said Washington was the only team not to have someone watching the workout.

One owner, the Texans' Bob McNair, introduced himself to Young before the throwing session. Young is from Houston and has said he'd like to play for his hometown fans.

"I think he had a good workout," McNair said.

The Texans, who were 2-14 last season, are expected to lean toward drafting USC tailback and Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush after extending quarterback David Carr's contract for three years.

McNair said he hopes to attend Bush's workout early next month. But he also indicated the Texans haven't decided who to draft or whether to keep or trade the pick.

As a quarterback who can run or throw, Young is the most intriguing player in the draft, scheduled for April 29-30 in New York. He may also be the most scrutinized as teams try to decide whether his Rose Bowl performance of 467 total yards and three rushing touchdowns will translate into the NFL.

"It's a very valuable pick," McNair said. "We all want to make a good decision."

During the season, Young often wore his iPod digital music player during pregame warmups. There was no music Wednesday, but Young kept things loose by clapping his hands and chatting with family members who watched.

"Hi grandma!" he shouted after one pass.

"I was enjoying it," Young said. "I'm at home. I'm always relaxed."

According to NFL.com, Young measured 6-foot-4 5/8 and 228 pounds. He ran one 40-yard dash, timing 4.57 seconds, although Young said he was told he timed between 4.4 and 4.5.

Although Young wasn't scheduled to run Wednesday, he said he wanted to after watching some of his teammates do it.

"They wanted to see me run, so I ran," he said.

The change of heart impressed Kubiak.

"He's very competitive and got in an environment where everybody wanted to see him operate," Kubiak said. "He did a great job."

Young spent most of the last two seasons operating out of the shotgun. Wednesday's drills had him taking simulated snaps under center and working with five- and seven-step drops in the pocket.

"I showed them everything they wanted to see," Young said, adding he'll do individual workouts for teams that ask.

Gil Brandt, longtime Dallas Cowboys personnel director and current NFL.com draft analyst, said Young performed well in front of the crowd.

"I think he really helped himself today," Brandt said. "He threw the ball well, a quick delivery. I think he did everything he was asked to do."

You should, seeing as how he is consistantly the most accurate and unbiased NFL source out there.

Hell Vito, even watching the highlights you can see that Vince waits for the receivers to come out of their breaks.

And for all the raving Salsbury did about FJ, he also mentiond that it will be a challenge for FJ to take snaps under center, with the NFL speed and blitz pick-ups.

FINAL UPDATE 10:15PM

While the internet world is abuzz about Vince Young's workout this afternoon sources have told us the point of view in the scouting community is mixed and many are not happy.

Young's arm-strength was impressive, but no one though it would not be.

The problem was Jerry Rhome, who ran Young's workout, made sure it was very Vince Young friendly and sanitized the workout. Scouts walked away with almost as many questions as they came with since the workout was not based on the usual NFL routine run at the combine. The fact Young threw a very limited number of downfield passes had scouts miffed.

Factor in Young was working with a pair of slow receivers, one who was Idaho junior Daniel Smith who barely broke 4.65-seconds during his pro-day workout, and scouts are not convinced Young is worth a top seven pick.

As we stated earlier, Norm Chow of the Titans will work Young out tomorrow, bringing in his own receivers, the Houston Texans are scheduled to individually workout Young this weekend and the Jets will follow suit on Monday.

One player who received a lot of positive comments for his terrific workout was tight end David Thomas, who put on a pass catching clinic.

A little further south, Texas State held its' pro-day workout in San Marcos later in the afternoon.

Defensive tackle looked good Fred Evans impressed scouts. Weighing near 310-pounds, Evans ran his forty's in the 5.10 second range and turned in a 34.5-vertical jump.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: 7:55 PM

Also there was:

Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks’ coach Chris Palmer, Mike McCarthy of the Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins GM Randy Meuller, and Rick Neuheisel of the Baltimore Ravens.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UDPATE: 5:10 PM

Floyd Reese of the Tennessee Titans, Charlie Casserly and Gary Kubiak of the Houston Texans, Jim Haslett of the St. Louis Rams, Ted Thompson of the Green Bay Packers and Nick Saban of the Miami Dolphins were among the big names in attendance.

Defensive tackle Rodrique Wright ran the 20-yard shuttle, hoping to better his time from the Combines.

"I had a good time but felt I could do even better," Wright said. "It was the last drill we did (at the Combines) and I was a little drained."

He posted an unofficial 4.47 shuttle, besting the 4.54 he had in Indianapolis.

Vince Young notched a 33-inch vertical jump and 9-foot-8 broad jump.

Michael Huff ran his 20-yard shuttle in 3.96 and managed a 6.84 in the three-cone drill. He also participated in secondary drills and looked fluid working out at both safety and cornerback.

"With the positional drills at the combine and my Pro Day, people will be able to tell whether I can play corner or not," Huff said confidently.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE 3:50 EST

The report we received from the bubble at the Texas pro-day was Vince Young looked solid yet nothing special. His passing workout did not hurt his draft stock yet it did not move him into the top six picks. Jerry Rhome ran the workout.

Young worked out with a pair of slow receivers yet was late on his timing throws and really only threw one deep pass.

Tomorrow Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow will workout Young individually with receivers from the Titans.

Cedric Griffin had an outstanding day and too many, looked better then Michael Huff. Offensive tackle Jonathan Scott improved from a poor bench press and was solid during position drills.

We will keep providing the updates as they come in to us from Texas.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE 2:10 EST

More then 100 scouts and coaches are on hand at the Longhorn pro day, as each team has sent close to four representatives per organization. Besides that, tons of media have flocked to the pro day.

A shocking announcement was made when the Longhorn strength coach told everyone on hand Vince Young would not take part in any of the running or jumping workout. After much booing and prodding Young ran a single 40 and was clocked between 4.59-and-4.61.

Jonathan Scott did not run the forty and only completed just 17 reps on the bench. Tight end David Thomas was able to complete 21 reps.

Michael Huff and Cedric Griffin did not run the forty, standing pat on their combine times. Each participated in the pro-shuttle, with Huff turning in a time close to 4.00 and Griffin clocking in the low 3.9 area.

Linebacker Aaron Harris was unable to break the 5-second barrier in the forty.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10 AM EST:

Prior to last month's combine, we reported on the problems Young was having. His late decision to pull out of the Indy workouts were a direct result of poor practices.

Sources have told us things have not gotten much better. In fact we have been told Young has recently had some terrible workouts.

While the perception has been Young is working hard with former quarterbacks coach Jerry Rhome, we have learned the reality of the situation is much different. Sources confirmed Rhome has worked with Young for less than a week's time and there is concern about his accuracy and throwing mechanics.

His sidearm motion presents a challenge, yet the bigger problem seems to be Young's inability to release the ball from one consistent spot, which has his passes flying all over the place.

Worse yet is Young's inability to concentrate.

When pulled to the sidelines and taught how to run certain drills Young struggled to grasp what was being asked of him and rarely got drills correct on the first run-through. The opinion is the Texas gunslinger needed a lot of guidance running up to his pro day and has not received it.

Also of concern is Young's affinity for socializing, as many report seeing him out on the town nightly in Houston.

And while no one can predict exactly what will happen today, the early signs are ominous.

Another Longhorn who seems to have taken a lackadaisical attitude is tackle Jonathan Scott.

After a poor combine in which he ran the forty in 5.35 seconds, turned in a vertical jump of just 24.4-inches and did not lift because of a strained pectoral muscle, Scott needs a big workout to solidify himself as a top-75 selection.

Yet sources have told us his attitude has been quite to the contrary and Scott has put limited time into preparing for today.

The TFY Draft Preview will be providing updates all day long as they come in from Austin

And he is going to be able to run a pro offense??? There is soo much more than just lining up under center. Its being able to check down while in the pocket, being able to survey the scheme at the line and call audibles and being able to consistently prepare week in week out for the next game.

Just asking the question...does anyone see Vince ending up ala Akili Smith? I mean didn't Akili have tremendous athletic ability? Strong Arm? Etc...just asking...

I dont mind Vince the person and he is prolly a good kid, so I dont want to openly root for his failure, I just dont see him being an effectice NFL QB and that is what everyone is trying to make him out to be. If they were saying that w/ some work he could trun into a very good QB, I could understand, but everything about the guy, outside of his athletic ability is questionable and everyone is trying to tell me that he is going to revolutionize the QB position. If he is the real Football Jesus, then maybe he can.

Mark it down...

Vince is not an NFL quarterback. He never was. This is not his fault, his skill set doesn't lend itself to the pro game. He needs to be protected, get some up-front money once he's drafted, and invest it wisely. It will be his only NFL contract.

Archive it.

BTW

just heard VY had a very good workout with the Titians, they brought in their own wr's and db's and VY was up to the challenge.. Chow was impressed..

Mort reported it and has now talked with 15 teams and is softing his view on VY.
Very strong arm, very quick release, very accurate, very nice touch and seemed to have a very good understanding of the game... He throws a very catchable ball and naturaly understands when to throw with touch and when to throw with some heat. Release not seen as a real problem.

Jason was a good college QB. So was Major Applewhite and Josh Heupel. 12-0 is not laying the wood twice. 65-13 is more than just wood, it's the whole forest.

In defense of Horn Fan Homerism step back and look. Texans as a whole are a bit arrogant and cocky. So we tend to take offense to mindless jabs and chatter. We love this university and especially the athletic teams. AD Deloss Dodds has put some pretty good people on the payroll to deliver the results that the fanbase and alumni demand. Even though all the ingredients were there for success on the gridiron it was still hard to be a Texas Football fan at times. For one we had a coach dubbed Coach February. The one who couldn't win the big one or even a conference title. The team hadn't sniffed a title in 35 years. The team had a QB with an unorthodox throwing motion that many believed he would be better suited to play WR. Questionable coaching decisions and soft players. And worst of all they always seemed to be a victim of the hype machine. Alswys rated highly based on 3 decade old results. Oh how we love our Horns and how they are hated and despised by the national media and internet boards across the land. Finally this funky QB leads the team to the title game against the "Best Team Ever" and proceeds to put on a show like no other. Sure he may be an NFL bust, a longtime journeyman, or maybe even a hall of famer. Who knows, who outside of Texas really cares. Because of the hardships and heartbreaks associated with being a Texas fan I see no problem of continuing to stroke the sack of the one to lead us to the promise land and proclaim VY Football Jesus. 8)

I've been consistant with my praise of Vince since the Rosebowl in 2k5.

I watched the NFL from 1978 til the Oilers left Houston and in that time I saw a number of QBs that couldn't come close to Vince.

I think every team has had its dogs I remember the Oilers being lead by Oliver Luck and the Cowboys being lead by Gary Hoagabom

Ty Dietmer has been in the league for 14 years and he looks closer to Pee Wee Herman than an NFL QB.

I have no doubt that Vince will be a QB in the NFL for as long as he wants he is too good a leader, passer and athlete.
