Question of Strategery

A hypothetical situation...
You're up by 1 point with 7.9 seconds on the clock and have 2 free throws, both of which you make, so now you're up by 3.
Why not guard the ball as it comes in, and as soon as it gets close to half court, commit the foul? Even if you're in double bounus the other team gets two free throws with maybe 4 seconds. The worst that can happen is you're still up by one with the ball out of bounds.
OK, there's a slight chance that they make one, miss the second and get the rebound. But isn't there a lot less chance of the opponent tying or winning the game this way than there is if you let them bring it all the way down and try a 3?
