Are we ever gonna find a cure for cancer?

Why haven't we yet? We can fly robots to distant planets and give people new faces. We can detect what's going underneath the earth and in outer space. We can build tunnels underwater and bridges thousands of feet in the air between giant mountains. The feats of the human race are magnificent. So why can't we beat cancer?

My sister had thyroid cancer at the age of 21. They took it all out. Said they got it all. Last month they foud more in her lymph nodes. Went in and took out 42 lymph nodes, of which 8 had cancer. There is also evidence that one node HAD the cancer, but apparently it escaped and it could be roaming around anywhere in her body. Like some sort of evil alien being or something. I'm REALLY annoyed because she has to go through all this. Surgeries. Radioactive iodine. Laying in bed for days. Missing work. Health insurance issues. Et cetera. And I am wondering why it happens to certain people and not others. She's only 24. She wants to get married and have kids and she teaches 4th grade and she is loved by everyone.

I can't help but wonder... is it gonna keep spreading until they can no longer do anything for her? Is she going to be able to live a long happy life? I'm so confused and don't know what to think.

I guess I'm venting on here because I'm mad at the world and it's a good place to be mad. Or something. :?

And maybe, just maybe, someone might care about what's going on.

I don't want to get too much into conspiracy theories but I wonder if we're ever going to see cures to diseases when there is so much money to make by the medical companies. We'll get medicines to make us feel better but they don't always cure us. I don't think I'll see it in my lifetime you wonder how soon the cure will be available if it is ever is found.

If you’re looking for a cure for cancer, you might want to check with Dinsdale. I’m sure he’s got one lying around somewhere. Of course, Van will probably claim to have a better one.

Goober, no, I'll just point out to Dins all the reasons his cure won't actually work. He'll then remind me that he's Dins, so of course it works, because that's how he rolls.

Lee Iacocca jumped on this bandwagon,
so it's not that much of a 'conspiracy theory'
after all.

Cure cancer and some weird flu pandemic will kill you. Something will. God, nature, has a way of determining your length of stay here....

Oncology and Cardiology units gross the biggest profit for hospitals, so that pretty much seals the fate of cancer and heart disorder patients ever being "cured."

Reading your post, I feel your pain! I hope things work out positively for your sister!

As far as finding a cure for cancer... I don't think we ever will. I believe it is part of the human condition.

Cancer develops when cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. Although there are many kinds of cancer, they all start because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells.

Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. During the early years of a person's life, normal cells divide more rapidly until the person becomes an adult. After that, cells in most parts of the body divide only to replace worn-out or dying cells and to repair injuries.

Because cancer cells continue to grow and divide, they are different from normal cells. Instead of dying, they outlive normal cells and continue to form new abnormal cells.

(You can use the internet to get the rest..BUT!!)

If we ever find a cure for cancer, we will then create the perfect nearly indestructible human. The world will overpopulate with these SuperHumans and use up all of our resources and someone will post... Why can't we Stop Hunger..

This can only have Morbid consequences...

That leads to the Question.. Why is Life unfair? and there you will find millions of answers .. I find the best one to be Christianity!

No, I am not a Bible Thumper... The Christ Story does help me to have a purpose in this crazy world...

That is precisely what God did on the cross. There was Jesus’ body–naked and marked with scars, bleeding and exposed to all the violence and injustice of the world. The cross reveals that we live in a world of gross unfairness...and with a God of sacrificial love.

The cross lets us know that no one is exempt from tragedy or disappointment... not even God. Good Friday demolishes once and for all the notion that life is supposed to be fair.

But lest we despair, If the message of unfairness seems overpowering in Jesus’ crucifixion, Easter settles the issue once and for all. God is fair but we can only appreciate what we have when we are aware that someday ithat what we have will be gone and we never know what day that wil be!

...
Enjoy what you have, instead of cursing what you don't!!

I truly do hope that your sister beats this cancer and I hope the best for you in your life's journey !!

Dins will start with something like...

Cancer?? How quaint. :)

I guess some of you idiotic vermin are still struggling with prosaic maladies like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

I remember back when I was teaching the Mayo boys how to do a tonsillectomy they wanted to use a scalpel and I laughed and said, "Why don't you just jam a steam shovel down his throat?"

Primative morons.

Anyhoo, as I was saying, Hippocrates came to me on hands and knees, begging me to help him develop an oath...

Actually, a buddy of mine pretty much came up with the cure just fucking around in his wine cellar (can you say "best grapes known to humans") one day. He's 162 years old now and still runs a sub 3 hour marathon. But I'm sure you rejects probably knew that what with your "Chemotherapy" and all (S'up 1930's).
Let me know how that works out for you, 'cause, around here the average life expectancy is right around 175 or so.

Why's there no cure for cancer?

'Cuz it's caused by too many frigging things. Our cells want to become cancerous and grow unchecked but are kept under control by genes that keep them from dividing forever. Too many factors - genetics, environmental factors (natural chemicals, man-made chemicals), viruses, monkey with that "off" switch and turn our cells cancerous. It doesn't help that folks outright refuse to make lifestyle choices that have been proven to lower their cancer risk - changes in diet, tobacco usage (think about that thread regarding chewing tobacco), tanning, etc.

To claim that doctors and some monolithic medical hegemony are covertly suppressing a "cure" to make money may make some feel better and feed their yen for conspiracy theories, but it's nonsense. The fact is that HUGE progress has been made against many forms of cancer. Hell, just this month some of my former colleagues at the U of Rochester (yes, I actually worked with them...) made national news with their vaccine vs. HPV, which was 100% effective (a medical 1st) and will help prevent about 70% of cervical cancers (since HPV causes that percentage of cervical cancer). I have a lot of friends who are doctors and I find the quickly-assumed argument that they'd milk someone's suffering for cash offensive. I've knocked back beers and Scotches with these folks after they did all they could to no avail. They were frigging devastated and frustrated.

Frustration with the perceived lack of progress in cancer treatment is understandable when the disease hits home. My prayers to Patsy and her sis from a guy whose mom had a 15 pound ovarian tumor and a breast mass removed from her.

even if someone went 'salad tosser holding dickie thon's pog' on it?

i fully expect someone to pull a scam where they got to keep the boob, while shipping the original jar of formaldehyde it was kept in.
